This is the most attentive to all travellers on all budgets. The hotel is situated close to all amenities including the monorail transport. All levels of hotel staff are the most helpful to all clientel that I observed whilst there. I had a daughter(12) and they treated her like a little princess. All children were treated with care and respect. My second home!

Top Class

This was our second visit to Shangri-La Bangkok, excellent service, first class accomodation. Join the Golden Circle Club, before you travel, you can upgrade your room for a small amount and enjoy several other benefits. The restraurants are yummy, especially the breakfast, where you coat the fruit in a fountain of chocolate. Be sure to agree the taxi fare before you go anywhere and always take a hotel card with you as some drivers do not speak very good English. Go to the night market, be sure to look in the shops as they have designer copies but better quality than the stalls. Far East is excellent value for money.

Well worth the money

I had booked an Horizon Club room in January 2005 but when I checked in I asked whether I could stay in the Krungthep Wing which had recently been recommended on this site. I was taken over to the Krungthep Wing by hotel tuk-tuk but neither of the two rooms they could offer me had been renovated and were showing signs of wear. The Krungthep Wing, depending on your outlook, is either beautifully quiet and sedate or remote and lifeless.

I stuck with the Horizon Club room in the original Shangri-La Wing, which is basically like an Executive River View room but on a higher floor and included use of the beautiful Horizon Lounge on the 24th floor with fantastic views along the busy river. The atmosphere here at sunset is great and the unlimited drinks and hot and cold snacks served between 5.30 and 7.30pm were worth the extra cost. The included breakfast could be taken here or in the river front buffet restaurant Next 2. Complimentary use of the internet in the Horizon Lounge is also provided.

In all honesty this room, although not the largest, was probably the nicest I have had in Bangkok (during the same trip I stayed at the Sheraton Grande and the J.W. Marriott). The design and decor were different and very pleasing to my taste. The bathroom with separate shower and large bath was great. The seating area with views along the river was very pleasant.

With its excellent location adjacent to the Skytrain and the piers (for river transport) and its wide range of facilities and restaurants I cannot recommend the Shangri-La enough.

great hotel

We stayed in this hotel for a week in March, 2005. I found this hotel on Tripadvisor and has no regrets. Excellent location - river boats, BTS trains just around the corner. The food was excellent, especially Next2 restaurant on river terrace. Prices are reasonable. The staff was very polite and helpful. The huge lobby with jazz playing in the evening. We stayed in main building and visited Kungstep Wing which was recommended as a luxury new wing. I would not recommend to stay in this new wing - very noisy highway is behing the wall, very small pool, no restaurant, the appartments share the same building and the whole wing is very cold and uninhabitant. The old building is better, fresh flowers everywhere, very lively athmosphere, large pool and many restaurants with variety of cousin.
If I visit Bangkok again, I'd defenitely stay in this hotel again - its better than Oriental or Peninsula or Sheraton, and less expensive (I visited all of them).
PS. Avoid Fish Supermarket restaurant - rip off, poor quality food, very commercial place, exuberant prices

Great Location but no sound proofing and rooms underwhelming

We stayed at the Shangri-La Bangkok on 15/16 February 2005 at the recommendation of TripAdvisor comments and booked a room in the Krungthep Wing. This was the end to a fabulous holiday in Hong Kong and the Evason Hideaway Hua Hin which was incredible.

The Krungthep Wing is more like serviced apartments - you are a short walk from the main hotel and the place has no atmosphere whatsoever. We were not aware of this until we arrived and felt like we were being shunted out to a lesser part of the hotel even though this is supposed to be the uber-luxury wing.

The room was fine in size but was pitched as a Deluxe Room and there was nothing to warrant that label. The worst aspect was the lack of soundproofing. We heard next door's wake up calls, the lift arriving and departing and the plumbing from half the floor.

With no sleep we left Bangkok tired and angry and vowing never to stay at the Shangri-La again.

If you are looking for luxury and location go for the Peninsula or Oriental. The only redeeming feature is the NEXT2 terrace restaurant at the Shangri-La. Otherwise avoid.

We stayed at Shangri La Bangkok 3 nights at end of Dec last year. It was fantastic. The location is ideal, on the river, easy walking distance to Silom Road, and with a Skytrain station just out the far end of the hotel. It gives great access to the rest of the city. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, well maintained and furnished to high standard. The staff were brilliant, genuinly helpful & friendly. The pool area is a real oasis of calm in the midst of bustling Bangkok (apart from some river boat noise, which is more entertaining than annoying). There is a good poolside/riverside bar and an excellent Thai resturant by the river too (one of the best meals ever). I would highly recommend this hotel and would definately stay here again.

location, location, location

I agree with the comment made about there really being 2 Shangri-las, the shangri-la wing and the superior Kungthrep wing. We stayed in the cheaper wing and had a room overlooking the river. These rooms, although of a very good standard, do not have the wow factor I anticipated and associated with the image of Shangri-la. Please do not let this put you off though, as the hotel is of a very high standard, the breakfasts are among the best I have ever had and the setting on the river is second to none.
Parts of the hotel are very grand and impressive but other parts are becoming jaded and tired. The gym is one such area. I also had my hair blow dryed and my nails painted, not in the kungthrep wing spa but in the older part, I was shocked at the extremely basic facilities, certainly not a five star spa experience!
The hotels location is its glory, right on the river, travelling by river taxi is preferable to hours sitting in Bangkok traffic, the Grand palace and the Klongs both easily reached by river taxi from the hotels pier. The sky train station is on the doorstep and patpong area is very close by.
I would stay in the Shangri-la again, I would like to try and stretch the budget to the Kungthrep wing though!

Fantastic Hotel !!

One of the best hotels we have ever stayed at!!!

Fantastic rooms, Fantastic & Friendly Hospitality, Excellent & Good Value Food -(including Room Service), Excellent location too!

A must for anyone 'weary about what your hotel will be like after a long flight'. You are welcomed and looked after extremely well, with a wonderful Luxury room too! - a perfect start for a real adventure of Thailand.

Will definately use the Shangri-la as our starting base again!

Never seen better!

The Bangkok Shangri La is without a doubt the most beautiful hotel I have ever experienced. The room we booked was the least expensive and it was gorgeous. I cannot even imagine what the other upgraded ones are like!! The pool is lovely, the restaurant (we only ate at the buffet) was excellent, the ambience wonderful and the service great. If I can afford to stay here, I will every time I am in Bangkok.

Kungthrep wing

from englishmike
There are really two shangri-la hotels. There is the shangri-la and then there is the kungthrep wing.We have stayed in both and there is no comparison with regard to the room or the service and very little difference in cost.Staying in the older shangri-la is like staying in a nice Hyatt and staying in Kungthrep is likke staying in a four seasons property.Book through the shangri la site and get a better deal than with the usual agencies on line.Join golden circle and get breakfast for free.We paid 175 a night which included breakfast and a room overlooking the river which was like a suite.Hotel is five minute walk to the skytrain, three minute walk to the river boats and 40 minutes to the airport via toll road.Use the public express boats on the river for historic sites and skytrain for shopping.Make sure you go to Panthip plaza and mbk for shoppiing as well as night market by the american embassy, avoid patpong night market unless you wish to tour a redlight area.

Krungthep Wing Shangrila Hotel

Stay in this wing if you can, Beautiful seperate entry and great service. No hassels and everyone wants to help. You felt as if you were the ony one there. The breakfast buffet was so outstanding, the best that I have ever experienced. Very quiet ambience as there are no tour groups here. The rooms are not as large as the Peninsula but very luxurious. We even had room service for breakfast at 3AM included since we were leaving so early. The skytrain is right across the street. The view of the river was not as great and we had a noisy couple the last nite. If you don't like busy hotels, stay here.

Top Local Tips for Bangkok

Grand Palace and Jim Thompson House Both must sees. Ignore people at sites claiming "buy tickets outside" or "closed until 1.00 so go to somewhere else". Both cons.

Departure Tax Remember to leave behind some Baht for the departure tax, currently 700B for each person, even for a toddler !!! (They don't accept credit card !!!!!!)

Vertigo Bar I had read about the Vertigo Bar atop the Banyan Tree Hotel, which calls itself the "world's tallest al fresco bar and restaurant". We went there and it was definitely cool to be high atop the city and sipping a cold drink - would recommend a stop here!
