The view is great but a bit out of the way. I think the bathrooms are a bit dated and could do with a refurbishment. Also I think the TV should be changed to LCD on the wall. They should also try and conserve energy and make you use your room card to switch on the electricity. Too much waste of power otherwise. The food was great and off course too much. All in all I enjoed my stay very much.

Before you read this review, you should know where I am coming from. I'd like to start off by saying that I have been to Bangkok many times and have probably stayed in 10 hotels there. The Royal Orchid, as a hotel, is excellent. The rooms are all facing the river and have fine views. All other services are also first rate. Now the negatives. My biggest complaint about the hotel is its location. Yes, it's on the river and has great views, but so are other hotels. The problem with its location is that it is not convient to anything except an overpriced antiques mall (I think called The Riverwalk). Other than that, you have to either take a taxi or walk a great distance to go anywhere...and Bangkok can get very hot. The skytrain, which I absolutly love, is not close by. It is a fifteen to twenty minute walk away. To me, that's a huge drawback. Other than that, the hotel is an excellent value, especially if you book it on the web.

My favorites in Bangkok include The Peninsula. On the river and first rate in every way. The very affordable Shangri-La, which is also on the river and right next to the Skytrain. The Four Seasons Bangkok, expensive, but great location (away from the river). For excellent accomidations at a very reasonable price, check out the (don't laugh) Holiday Inn Silom. It has standard rooms but great location and great breakfast.

Favorite Hotel in BKK, The Peninsula, hands down.
Least Favorite in BKK, The Oriental. Stuffy, and Waaaay too much attitude for me...

Having stayed at the Plaza Athenee earlier in our trip (highly recommended), we wanted to stay in a different part of the city. The river location of the Sheraton and the view from the rooms is impressive, but one is slightly out on a limb, away from the Skytrain and main shopping areas. It is easy enough to get to other parts of the city, but it is also nice to be able to have an evening walk, and the areas around the hotel are not that inspiring.

The rooms are large and comfortable, although the bathrooms are a little old fashioned. The garden pool is very attractive and the staff attentive.

The breakfast buffet was busy and not always that well stocked. Some Asian vegetarian options would have been appreciated.

All in all, worth considering, but there are many other options.

Wonderful Hotel!

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel on our honeymoon. The staff were friendly, the rooms were modern, clean and near luxurious. The view from our room was stunning – out over the Chao Praya River. The view alone really made our stay all the more special. We only stayed here for three nights but loved every minute of it. The hotel’s location is great – only a short (5 min) tuk-tuk ride from anywhere special (Wat Arun, Pat Pong, for example). Also, because the hotel is located right on the river, it was easy to take a river bus or even a long-tail boat, which we hired for a private tour of the khlongs. The hotel has a very useful tour office in the foyer which can arrange day trips and other excursions.

Our only gripe (and it is minor) was the western style live band music entertainment in the foyer restaurant area late at night – quite cheesy and tasteless.

The buffet breakfast was great too. All-in-all a superb experience.

What an excellent hotel this is,we upgraded on arrival, it was well worth it, it gives you a room on the top floor and access to free drinks and ordeurves in the executive lounge on the 26th floor with great views over the river, its open from 5-30 till 7, excellent. The rooms are big, fresh towells everytime you use one lol fresh fruit and newspaper everyday. Staff excellent, the prices are a little high compared to outside the hotel, but every hotel in bangkok over charges for drinks lol Internet access available from room if required or free from executive lounge. Easy access for river ferries etc this hotel and staff are great !

Excellent location and superb service

Stayed 4 nights in this hotel en route to Australia. When we checked in we were given a free upgrade to a deluxe room with breakfast included as the hotel was not busy. The buffet breakfast was absolutely superb and kept us going most of the day.

Room was large, clean and comfortable with lots of complimentary extras such as toothbrushes and razors.

Facilities at the hotel were excellent and the Thai Restaurant put on a show each evening during dinner.

River buses stopped outside the hotel and were a good way of getting around this otherwise very busy city. Would definitely recommend it.

I stayed with my husband at Royal Orchid in May 2005. Quality hotel and nice river view from the room!

I would have given 5/5 rating, but 5-star hotel should have more focus on room cleaning (sheets have small stains, there was not enough toilet paper, welcome fruits were left to rotten for 4 days...).

The location is nice, two piers next to hotel so you can use the Express boats (the river is congested unlike the BKK roads) and you may also have a dinner cruise like we did - very nice experience, we recommend it!

The hotel has a shuttle service to Skytrain station Chang Nonsi once an hour (except during peak hours twice an hour). Surasak -station is the closest one, but it takes almost 30 minutes to walk there and there is lot of traffic so it is not a pleasant walk. On the other hand, you may stop at State Tower's Starbucks on your way...

River City -mall is located next to the hotel, with antiques, souvenir shops, tailors, etc. but you definitely get cheaper stuff from MBK.

I travel often and am a harsh critic of hotels. The Royal Orchid was a great surprise when I first stayed there a couple of years ago, and I have now returned many times. The hotel has an incredible location on the river and, although few reviewers mention it, the hotel has HUGE frontage on the river with not one, but TWO sizable pools. After business or sightseeing in Bangkok, relaxing by one of the two pools is a great experience. The hotel is extremely well run, has top-notch staff and has great restaurant options. I hightly recommend both the Thai and Italian restaurants at the hotel. Lastly, as compared to some of the other hotel options in Bangkok, the Royal Orchid is a relative bargain. Recommend highly.

nice but not so beautiful

My husband and i were to the Royal Orchid 2 nights; the hotel is nice with a great view; The room was clean but not so nice like other rooms in other oriental hotels, there is not the oriental taste that we are searching.
The staff is good but not so friendly like in other thai hotel.
Good the food restaurant, but the first night a waiter was so rude, he was in rush because we arrived 9.30 p.m!!! The second night the buffet was good, great the food japan style. We prefer to go in another hotel the next time in Bangkok!

Terrific View, Terrific Service

Super location on the river with the Chao Phraya Express Boat right there. The concierge was kind enough to tell us to go to our rooms and change out of our shorts in order to tour the Grand Palace. Service overall was terrific, as we have come to expect in Thailand. The pool is quite nice, and made more enjoyable by being riverside. The food at the Italian restaurant was excellent. The bed is so comfortable you'll never want to leave. Since we are Starwood Gold, we were upgraded to the top floor and had the most amazing view of the river (I would say this is worth paying extra for for those who don't get free upgrades). Wonderful.

Sometimes when I read the reviews I do wonder what people are looking for. It was a great hotel. Huge food choice. Really enjoyed the food and the staff were very friendly. I was suprised at how nice and attentive the staff were. nothing was too much trouble. It was a very good location as the river taxi was just outside the hotel and this was the best way to travel. (no congestion). I would certainly recommend this hotel

Top Local Tips for Bangkok

Hawkers You will be approached I should think at least twice by people in the street when you get to the major tourist sites like Wat Po and they will say "It is closed today". Ignore these people! It is always open. They are trying to lure you to their trip of a tour of the city with the usual shopping warehouses where they will try to divest you off loadsa dosh. BEWARE!!

Arrange pick up from the airport to your hotel, as it is 40 minutes away Call the hotel in advance for transportation!

Best value and view at The Sheraton Royal Orchid Pay a bit more and book the Executive Suite at the Sheraton Royal Orchid on a 100% non-smoking floor (you need to request this). The suites on the left side of the hallway (ending in odd numbers, i.e. 2117) have the best view.
