Watch out for sneaky tuk tuks Watch out for tuk tuks who will take you to gem scam places. Watch out for men who tell you they are ex-cops and willing to help you and tell you "interesting places to go" aka more gem scam places. And always look for metered taxi's. Don't fall for the flat rate cabs. If you do, negotiate before you get in the car.

Only buy liqour at the airport Buy your favourite foodstuffs or souvenirs from the shops in town, and not at the airport. Prices for food and stuff except for liqour at the airport are more expensive. Overall, you still have to pick the wines there, as elsewhere (Singapore and Dubai) the wines can be cheaper, but at the Bangkok airport there were some interesting new world wines at bargain prices.

Haggling and overpricing Be very aware that almost everything in Bangkok is open to haggling - and the initially quoted price will nearly always be HUGELY inflated over what it should be. This applies to everything - from taxi/Tuk Tuk rides, to goods on a market stall. A couple of examples: a handbag on a stall. The trader initially asked for 2500 baht. I told him no - I was only willing to pay 800. He reduced it to 2000, and I said no, only 800. He then offered the bag for 1000, and was even begging "please, please!" when I walked away. Think about it: if they're begging you to buy it for 1000 baht, then the initial price of 2500 includes a MASSIVE profit for them. Don't be suckered in. Also, the Tuk Tuk drivers try to make out that they're cheaper, but they're not. One driver quoted me 300 baht. I refused, and found an air-conditioned meter taxi whose meter came to just under 100. Don't let yourself be ripped off.
