Plan a slower pace in Bangkok This was our first time in Bangkok. We had outlined a lot of things to see in our three days there. We saw about half the things on our list. Bangkok has absolutely fascinating cultural attractions, but it takes 45 minutes to an hour just to get to one that isn't far away. We visit new countries at least three times a year. We have seen some congested streets, including Beijing recently, but none as bad as Bangkok. So allow for this expectation in your plans.

Airport Taxi's When you arrive at the new Bangkok airport and have collected your luggage you will see a booth for what is called the "Official" Transportation into Bangkok. They offer many different types of vehicles of your choosing at a set price to get you into the city. Although it is not a bad way to get to where you are going, it is not the cheapest way. If you go to the lower level of the terminal, you will find the taxi que. All of the cabs are clean, new and the price to get into the city will be a lot cheaper than via the "Official Transportation". Just join the line and when you get to the desk, tell them where you want to go. You will get a cab with a meter. Expect to be charged an additional 50 Baht fee. While in Bangkok, beware of cab drivers who turn their meters off and offer a set price. Always ask for a meter, otherwise you will be ripped off. And be sure you have the name of the location in Thai.
