Top Local Tips for Taipei
Take the city bus (Air bus)from airport It took only 10 bucks to take air bus from airport to the hotel. Taxi will take you about 36 bucks. You could tell the bus counter that you want to go to Sherton and they will direct you right bus. No tips needed. The bus driver didn't accept my tips when I gave him.
Don't Miss the Weekend Jade and Flower Markets Saturdays and Sundays find the area under the Jian Guo elevated freeway converted into huge, colorful Jade and Flower markets. The Jade market is on Jian Guo north of Ren Ai Road and the flower market runs from Hsin Yi Road to Ren Ai Road. The flower market carries eveything from elegant bonsai to cut flowers to water garden plants. The jade market also sells cultural artifacts, antiques, traditional Chinese style costume jewelry, Yixing ware and semi-precious stones. If you can't speak Chinese you can bargain back and forth using the merchant's calculator! Hours are from 9 am to late afternoon.
Safe and abundence of TAXIS Taipei is one of the rare big city of the World, the TAXIS are safe, economical and easy to catch. The taxis are always metered, the driver start the meter at beginning of the trip, and you just pay the final meter price at arrival. (NOT like in Paris France : you have make sure the meter is not already running with a pre-existing sum, while the driver is waiting in line for the customer - what a rip off!) The one thing you do need is the destination written in CHINESE(you can have the hotel front desk halp you), since a few drivers are able to speak english. DO carry a business card from the hotel, with Chinese on it, in case you get lost and need to get back to the hotel. Many young people do speak English in Taipei in a limited way, speak to them very slowly and smile a lot.
