Top Local Tips for Kandy

Temple of the Tooth We were booked by our guide to see the Buddha's tooth at this temple. Apparently, many Buddhists travel many miles to see this particular relic and for some, it is a trip of a lifetime. Whilst I can appreciate other people's beliefs, we queued for about half an hour in extreme heat and crowd to be whisked past at the speed of light when we eventually got to look at the relic (which is encased in a silver casket).The temple itself is worth a look, but don't bother queuing to see the "tooth".

Elephant Orphanage Near Kandy is the elephant orphanage which is stunning. You get up close and personal with all shapes and sizes of these wonderful creatures. Near by the Orphanage is a place where you can ride and have a shower with the elephants, amazing experience. Also in Kandy is the Buddhist - Temple of the Tooth, which is well worth a visit. Women have to cover up the shoulders and both men/women need to wear something long enough to cover the knees. One other location which is lovely is the Botanic Gardens, so lush and green inside and a wonderful Orchid House. Huge area but well worth a walk around. Watch out for the large fruit bats and even salamanders around the large lake in the centre of Kandy.

Temple of the tooth Ask your guide or the hotel reception what times the daily ceromonies take place at the temple as this is by far the best time to visit the mix of drums and flute playing in the temple is very evocativeand moving.
