Top Local Tips for Dambulla
Go on the Elephant Safari For 70us$ you can see Elephants in the wild, this can be booked from the town of Habarana. It's a must do for anyone who loves these beautiful creatures. There are 150 elephants in the national park some as young as 9months.
Mosquitoes, and Rock Temples In Sri Lanka, there are tons of mosquitoes, so don't just bring repellent - bring After Bite too. Or go to one of the spice gardens, and pick up some citronella oil to put the mozzies off, and spice balm to sooth the bites from those who sneak onto your feet and ankles. Also, when you go to the Rock Temples, be prepared for quite a climb uphill before you get there. The sellers outside the temple are, apparently, reasonable in price (we were told this by our driver and guide, who was with us for a week) although they can still be knocked down by quite a lot; state your price and wander away, it seems to work, as we had a seller run after us twice to try to get us to give in. The magic boxes are a particularly interesting buy up by the temples.
Get value for money Get friendly with a taxi driver as we did who had his own van. We booked him for 3 days. Hotels provide places for drivers to sleep. He booked the hotel for us and got us a good deal of $100 per night which was the local rate.
