Top Local Tips for Colombo
Tuk Tuks Try and form a rapport with some of the drivers as they will quickly recognise you. You'll get a much better deal if you stick to the same guys and chat to them. Also tipping is appreciated and will ensure you do not get ripped off.
Colombo - Safe to go! Despite reading much about the political and security issues on Colombo, it is definitely not as dangerous as what I have heard or read. The city is just like any others in a developing country although you might see police officers and soldiers patrolling the streets especially in areas where expatriates reside and around the presidential residence. From what I understood from the locals, most of the trouble is in the northern part of Sri Lanka. My advice is don't get over-worried when you have to travel to Colombo; the streets are relatively safe, most of the locals can speak simple English but try not to go out alone at night and especially to places out of the city centre.
tuk tuks these little three wheelers are a great way to move around with friendly informative drivers however decide on the fare before getting in and always bargain for quoting half the amount they ask.
