Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton Colombo Hotel

Go for the people

from Messy_but_tan
The Hilton is a very inconsistent chain but there are some things that never disappoint - the staff and the food are the two that stood out at this particular establishment. There are several restaurants at the Hilton all of which prioritize ambiance over actual authenticity in the cuisine. The grounds are beautiful although the pool is across the street from the hotel, an overhead walkway allows for the (unexaggerated by other reviews) traffic. I was moved three times before I realized that all rooms were in the same condition. The lobby sets one up for classic Hilton but the rooms are more shady motel. Stained carpets, discolored fittings in the bathrooms, questionable bed linen and poor decor. The last was most confusing as there is an art gallery on grounds with some lovely examples of Sri Lankan talent. The service is truly outstanding and the staff are very helpful, friendly and prompt. I travelled alone and they always made an effort to ensure that I was not neglected. Much of the commercial offerings are grossly overpriced in comparison with local merchants and as it is so close one should really make an effort to explore a bit. On the bright side the hotel is ideally situated so that most rooms offer outstanding views of either the ocean or the grounds.

Top Class Hilton

from EmmaLouise1978
We went to the Hilton for one night at the end of our trip in Sri Lanka and were very inpressed. The hotel in very grand inside, with great facilities and choice of bars/restaurants and even a nightclub. The room was fine and clean.

We stayed by the lovely pool for the afternoon. We used the gym, which was well equiped and staffed by a very helpful member of staff who was happy to assit you when needed.

In the evening we eat at the spoons restuarant which was expensive but superb. Each course was fantastic! We throughly recommend eating there.

We hadn't expected much of this hotel as it was just an over night stay, but were very pleasently surprised. Shame it was just a short stay and that we didn't have a chance to use more of the facilities or visit Columbo. - However the Coco Palm in the Maldives awaited us.

Wicked Hilton

from Karamsk1
We stayed at the Hilton CMB for a total of 7 nights and the hotel justifies its 5 star rating to the tee.

The service in the hotel is fantastic. The doormen even remembered my name as we returned from an extended week long trip to Kandy. Now thats what i call service. The rooms on the executive floor were modern/clean and our room has a view overlooking the sea to the Galle Face side on the 16th Floor.

The restaurants were good with food of a very high standard espeicially the Spoons restaurant although a little pricey. The hotel staff just could not do enough to ensure the stay was memorable. I was travelling with my wife and two young children ( 3 years and 21 months) and the staff always had a table prepared at breakfast with a high chair for my daughter.

Would we return? Yes without a doubt. This is the place to stay in Colombo wether on business or Pleasure as you are assured a relaxing and safe stay.

Hilton, comfortable location in CMB

Comfortable hotel with good service.

You get what you pay for

from sBird
Only stayed one night, just to get over the flight before starting the tour, and it did just that.

Welcome very warm, all staff were so attentive. Rooms are predictably Hilton-standard wonderful, everything you neeed without asking.

Food and restaurant was great! Really sorry we didn't stay longer to eat there again!

Pool and grounds are lovely - a real haven in the middle of such a mad city.

What can I say? You get what you pay for.....

Love this Hilton

from happywanderer1
We were looking for somewhere different for a week vacation. The hotel was terrific. They arranged a car to meet us at the airport, and we used the same driver all week to sightsee the city and surrounding countryside. We even took a day trip up to Kandy which was tremendous. I cannot say enought about this hotel. Everything was great from the staff to resturants to lounges to pool area. There's a great Italian resturant poolside. Everyone at the hotel from the doormen to staff managers were just great to us. I even lost my camera somewhere on the grounds and when I alerted the lobby manager I had lost it, they had an all out search for it. It was found and returned to me within the hour. I was very impressed. I would go back again tomorrow if I had the opportunity. It was the most comfortable hotel I've ever stayed at. My daughter even commented she has never seen my husband so relaxed on vacation before. Usually he finds something to complain about, but no complaints on this trip. We would go back just to stay at the hotel and relax.

I always use this hotel when I travel to Colmobo. There are others that are cheaper but if you want top quality service, top quality food and a super room then choose this place.
Every member of staff has a smile for you, they cannot do enough for you and when you are away on business to have a personal relationship with staff who remember your name makes you feel much more at home.
My last trip included a vacation at the end and my wife arrived separate from me. The staff ensured that she arrived safely, was treated excellently and made comfortable after a long flight.
many have said why did you not go up country for the holiday. Yes it would have been nice but we were here for complete R & R and that is what we got.
At the pool, at the health club, at the restaurants everyone made it exactly what we wanted.
I would reccomend this Hotel to anyone

a safe haven

We arrived after a long flight and wanted to minimise the jet lag before heading up country. This city centre hotel is excellent and has everything you require as you would expect from an International Hilton.

Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Excellent hotel and friendly staff

from mrfalafel
I was not expecting such a warm and personal welcome from such a large hotel. Smiles at the front desk, friendly words from the elevator operator, attentive service at the bar, engaging conversation at the Curry Leaf restaurant (which has truly excellent food, by the way, some of the best we had in Sri Lanka). Great place to get over jetlag! Oh, and the travel service is indeed way overpriced. Better to use the travel desk at the Grand Orient hotel down the road.

A Typical Hilton

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very Nice, albeit impersonal and huge, hotel. Very Very clean and beautifully modern and decorated, it was a haven from the noisy outdoors. A 2 minute walk from the congress building, so armed guards and tanks made the area very secure. The Blue Elephant Nightclub is one of three nightclubs in Sri Lanka, and admission is free for all guests, so it's worth checking out. Expensive hotel, but you definitely get what you paid for.

Top Local Tips for Colombo

Getting around Suggest you better make some arrangemnt on the transportation before arriving the citi as cab is expensive, 3 wheeler is danger and there's police, army and tamil tiger wating over you.

Gambling in Colombo Don't expect a great casino experience in Colombo, they don't have slot machines and the croupiers are very slow to deal cards, overall is a nice experience.

Great Holiday My Trip was great
