Historical Traveller Reviews of Cinnamon Grand Colombo Hotel

A great modern hotel

from Brighton_chick
Very modern business class hotel. Clean rooms. Outdoor pool is decent size. The staff were lovely. The restaurant food was OK, but our set menu on Christmas Eve was rather slow. It took over 4 hours! A minor problem in an otherwise great hotel.

Excellent

Everything about the Cinnamon Grand was just perfect. Nice comfortable rooms, very helpful forever smiling staff, a wonderful breakfast buffet. We tried most of the restaurants in the hotel and the Lagoon was especially good. The restaurants are also very reasonably priced by 5 star standards. The lobby has a bar which becomes very lively in the evenings with a live band playing. There is also a coffee shop in the lobby area that serves excellent cakes, cookies, icecreams etc.

Right next door is the Crescat Mall with a very nice food court in the basement.

If visiting colombo, dont think twice Just Go for this hotel.

Impressed with the Cinnamon Grand

from laurens2006
My husband and I spent 10 nights in the Cinnamon Grand and were very comfortable there. The room was modern and pretty spacious, the breakfast buffet was great and I loved the choice of restaurants. I'd especially recommend the Lagoon restaurant if you like fish!

The service was very good and the staff were consistantly polite and helpful.

The only complaint I had was that there was very little shade by the pool...not all Europeans want to fry in the sun all day! Having said that, most of the other hotels I've seen in Colombo don't seem to feel the need to provide sun umbrellas either.

I would definitely stay here again.

Really Cinnamon

from Aknelka
Our agent booked us in Plaze hotel, but when we arrived, the taxi driver brought us to Cinnamon Grand which surprised us a little bit, but he told us that it changed its name.

The reception was ok, we were greeted with juice upon arrival and were processed really quickly into our rooms. The room was modernly furnished and really comfortable. I liked their standing shower, really convenient.

As it was december, the hotel had christmas decorations, which gave it a special feel. Also, linked to the hotel is a shopping arcade, that is ok, though I guess more expensive than other malls in Colombo.

The highlight of the stay was of course discovering that all the bathroom products (soap, shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, cream, and even toothpaste) had cinnamon added to them. Hee hee hee whenever we took showers it felt like being in a really good bakery! (in a very nice and pleasant way).

We tried a couple of the restaurants in the hotel, the sea food one, and a fusion one, and both were very good.

Finally, the hotel has close to the lobby, between the reception desk and the elevator an area that is a bit elevated and where they do events (during the day there was a business lunch for some conference or workshop taking place in the hotel), on the night that we were leaving Colombo, there was a wedding taking place there, it was just so nice seeing the wedding event and the Sri Lankan wedding.

Comfortable and great service

from Fulhamrob
Had a few days at the Cinnamon Grand at the end of October 2006 on business. I was really impressed by the service, the comfort of the room and the cleanliness all round of the hotel. despite being warned off the food i ate their one night, and had a marvellous meal at the lagoon. The Breeze bar is also a fantastic place to unwind at the end of the day. The only word of warning is that the construction next door can be noisy
Great Hotel, Great Service

Great hotel!

from Arielarafe
This is the 2nd time I'm back in Sri Lanka and I was staying at this hotel for business but it's definitely can be a great hotel for tourists too! It's a big hotel but with lots of charm.

Room is very spacious and the bathroom is definitely one of the best I've seen. Breakfast is one of the things I looked forward to since they have an amazing selection with friendly wait services but can be a bit slow if it's incredibly busy.

The only two things that bother me was the slow check in which took about 20 minutes and the old gym in the basement. The old gym did not have ANY ventilation and I was already SOAKING wet 10 minutes into my workout and I'm definitely do not really sweat. However, I was being told there is a new gym on the main floor which NO ONE told me about....

Overall - it was a very pleasant experience!

Excellent Place to Stay in Colombo

from Gooma
A short walk to the Galle Face Green (one of Colombo's landmarks) where you will see couples hiding under umbrella's kissing and cuddling, buy a mango or a cool drink and walk along the board walk. It is very central to Colombo and is on the Galle Road.
The breakfast buffet was was of the finest which we had in Sri Lanka. The hotel doesn't look flash from the outside however the inside is very impressive.

very nice city hotel

from madamtraveller
I stayed a week in the Cinnamon Grand during a business trip.
The room was very spacious, clean and very light.
The choice of restaurants was very impressive . Although bit pricey for Sri Lankan standards, especially the seafood restaurant was very good.
The best value was probably the buffet in the main restaurant where one could get an astonishing variety of Sri Lankan food for only $16!
The coffee shop COffee Stop near the lobby eas great to relax on an ecler, chocolates and some coffee .
The only downside was probably the gym which was very primitive .Not well airconditioned and not very clean.
Also ,one needs to be aware of the hidden taxes that will boost up the rate of $90.-/night (including breaktfast ) to $125.-. But even at this rate it has more to offer than any other comparable hotel .

An Excellent Hotel

from Michelle02
I stayed at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel for about one week in January 2006 and thought it was fabulous! The rooms were spotless, the lobby was lively, and the breakfast was delicious. The staff were very polite and friendly, however can be slow at times. The breakfast buffet had something for everyone, many items are cooked right in front of you and everything tasted great.
The location of the Cinnamon grand is very convenient; if you don't want to pay the high hotel prices for internet and dinner etc, there is a mall literally right next door, and an excellent cheap buffet across the street. Everything is in walking distance. I would definately go back.

Good location, excellent restaurants, poor service

from name_not_provided
I've stayed at the Cinnamon Grand (formerly Colombo Plaza/Oberoi) four times over the past year and visit it regularly for dinner or coffee on Saturday mornings. Located along Galle Road in the heart of Colombo, it's an ideal jumping off point for shopping and site-seeing around the city.

If you're hungry for seafood, The Lagoon restaurant, which opens onto the hotel's lush garden, is one of the best in Colombo. The food is flawlessly prepared, beautifully presented and reasonably priced. The London Grill is also very good. Specialising in continental fare, it's the place to go if you've had your fill of curries and asian fusion.

Rooms in the old wing are a little faded, but generally clean and comfortable. Rooms in the new wing, which opened at the start of 2006, are also comfortable. The design aims earnestly at 'hip hotel' and succeeds at being exactly like every other 'hip hotel' room on the planet (though the effect is slightly skewed by shabby finishing). Nonetheless, all the necessary amenities are at hand and most people should be quite content in either the old or new wing.

Wi-fi is available in the lobby, but is virtually impossible to use as the account 'times out' after precisely five minutes, requiring the user to log in again, and again, and again. Seriously annoying.

Service is the Cinnamon Grand's Achille's heel, particularly at the reception desk, the lobby bar and the lobby cafe. If you do eventually manage to catch someone's attention, expect a long wait for your order to arrive. The problem is most acute at the lobby cafe, which is in permanent disarray. While you wait, sit back and enjoy the slapstick spectacle of a badly disorganised and under-trained band of waiters fumble through their jobs. At worst, some staff, notably at reception, can be outright surly. To be fair, service in the fine dining restaurants is good and many staff elsewhere in the hotel are professional and genuinely friendly. A cull of the bad ones is badly needed though.
