Historical Traveller Reviews of Plaza Parkroyal Hotel
Great Hotel
from kkscGreat Stay
from steve15182Clean and well located - but expensive for everything
from Wandering-codgerWould have been great except for the renovations!
from BeezelyApart from the rooms smelling of stale smoke, they were quite spacious and the bathrooms were ok. The pool area is lovely but no one seems to use it much. The breakfast was superb with heaps of choices. Taxis were easy to get outside the hotel. There are also some really nice little cafes across the road to eat.
On our way back the reception staff were nice but once again, no non smoking rooms available. Apparently they were now being renovated. So we understand that there is only one non smoking floor in the hotel!
I honestly don't know whether we would stay here again but maybe once the renovations are done it may be OK.
Very cozy hotel with extremely courteous staff
from W_From_HKAbout the Staff
I initally expected only lukewarm services, yet they exceeded our expectations. The hotel staff were extremely courteous, some even humurous (including the reception, concierge and housekeeping staff).
About the Rooms
Rooms are bright and well-furninshed, though the view of our room was a bit unacceptable (facing another building).
The washroom was overall clean but don't expect a 5-star washroom with great marble platforms. Also, minor leakages occurred when we used the shower.
About their Outlets and Facilities
Their breakfast had a very wide choice, including Asian and Western breakfast, the food was generally good but could be better if hotter. The swimming pool was fabulous and was definitely the best place in the hotel.
About the Location
10-15 min walk to Bugis MRT which would be quite annoying if you encounter thunderstorms. but it would also be a very nice walk if weather was fine.
Actually, there is a bus stop just at the back of the hotel, at Nicoll Highway, where you can return to the hotel through bus 14 (from Orchard Road and Suntec City), route 10 (from Lau Pa Sat and Raffles Place) and so on. In my opinion, returning to the hotel by bus is sometimes even faster than by MRT. All you need is an EZ-Link card.
Overall
A very nice hotel indeed. it would be considered as excellent when taking in account the rates that they charge. It is the software (the staff's friendly attitude) that makes all the difference. They definitely go the extra mile for service.
Great Asian food (Buffet)
from ipohGreat value
from BobbieeHaving emailed prior and made specific bed requests and being assured at the check in desk (at 10pm) that this was ok, we were initially dissapointed to be shown to a room not meeting the request. They finally got it right on the 3rd room we were led to and we had no further worries from that point on. The staff were very obliging and friendly, the included buffet breakfasts fantastic and we were overall very happy with our stay.
We had done a fair amount of research on what we would do on this stay with a marvellous Singapore Tourism site which gave us the MRT maps/stations and explicit explanations on what to see at each place and how to get to all the destinations we choose. It was fairly hard to limit what sights to see this trip in the available time. These were from one end of the island to another, sometimes involving MRT, buses and walking.
Singapore is a fantastically easy city to visit in this respect, we had purchased an Ezylink card for the MRT/bus and both trains and buses were very frequent, safe and clean on all routes travelled. (Visiting Rome immediately after this was a real culture shock).
We didn't eat at the hotel but at a gem of a restaurant /bar /nightclub just around the corner at No. 11 Bali Lane - a three storey green building facing the park. The staff there were fab and the meals low cost and just great. You walk past it to get to Bougis MRT which is a 10 mn walk 2 blocks away.
We did do one organised morning tour which gave us a good insight into the local laws, ways and customs - but felt it much more rewarding to research and 'do our own thing' and terribly cheap to boot!
We'll definately be doing more 3 or 4 day Singapore stop-overs in the future, it's a great way to avoid jetlag and see such a beautiful country at the same time.
Although a little away from the hub of the city, this hotel will be considered again.
Will definitely use again
from megsnanThe first night, we arrived around 8.30. At check-in, we were given a voucher for a free drink in the bar so decided to use that, and to eat at the buffet restaurant. We ordered from the menu, and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food so decided to eat there again the second night. However, we chose from the buffet the second night and, although there was a very good selection of dishes and no limit to the number of times you could go back, the food was only warm so we wished we had chosen from the menu again. There is also a more upmarket restaurant but we did not use it.
Breakfast was included in our rate and was very good, with a big choice of hot and cold dishes.
We were not leaving until evening, so asked about late checkout. We were told that this would cost more, so we stored our luggage and came back later in the day to chill out by the rooftop pool. We ordered some excellent sandwiches from the pool bar (don't be put off if it looks closed - they don't have anything on display) and then used the showers and changing rooms to freshen up before leaving for our flights.
We found all the staff at reception, concierge, pool and restaurant were friendly and helpful and will definitely go back next time.
Above average
from ms9Plaza Park Royal - good low rise choice in a high rise city
from helenakittThe hotel and room was spotless, the service always friendly and excellent both in the conference facilities and the accommodation. The pool area is very pleasant and the pool is a reasonable size. The hotel also does a great lunch buffet for $28Sg plus tax.
My only complaint was I would have preferred a hotel closer to the MRT as this hotel is on the edge of the main parts of the City. But the hotel itself is hard to fault.
Top Local Tips for Singapore
How we did it. you'll have your own plans and planned destinations. Knowing what we did may help you. We took half day city tour on the first day, got our bearings and learned which places we missed or want to visit again. Got another tour for Sentosa. We went to orchard, bugis, suntec, on our own - all accessible via MRT. Dont miss night safari too. We had a day to spare so we got to golden mile which was near our hotel and spent just 24 hours tour - travel and sleep time included to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia got back to singapore for our final night/day. If you have lots of time (ie at least 5 days, you may opt to wander off on your own. If you're pressed for time, better take the guided tours even though you'll know they will be more expensive. Is saves the troubles of getting lost or taking wrong turns which leads to arguments.you went to enjoy so sitback and let the guides do their things. If you want nice beaches though singapore pales in comparison to other south east asian destinations
Beware the package tours. Evening Safari etc We were heavily pressured the moment we got to the hotel by a tour operator to go on one of the night tours as we had very limited time in Singapore. We were told if we didnt book immediately we would miss out. Very tired after a 12 hr flight we gave in without doing enough research. Cost S$186 for the 4 of us (2 adults 2 children). It was very like a school tour and we were spoken to like children. The whole thing was done at a million miles and hour without any chance to appreciate anything. Our apparent evening meal although good was a light snack and we had to feed our teenagers again later in the evening. I would ercommend that you dont sucumb to the pressure and find your own way around the areas of interest at your own pace. Singapore is tiny, the taxis very cheap and good food abundant.
Best that we have seen anywhere in the world.. Why can't all countries be so organised and clean?
