Loved the Hotel Loved the location
from kangasaIt had pleasant atmosphere, our room was very clean and had a huge kingsize bed and a great view over the river. It was with in walking distance of most places one would want to visit in Singapore. It also had a supermarket in the basement which we found great for just popping into for snack food, drinks etc. The swimming pool area was a great place to crash at the end of a heavy day of sight seeing, it was well maintained and they supplied large fluffy towels for our use each day. Anything we requested was supplied by the staff. I requested in advance for a non smoking floor and adjoining rooms which we got. Probably the only small thing was that the mini bar fridge (which we emptied and stocked with our own drinks) did not seem to get cold enough, but we just rang for a bucket of ice each day and this was promptly delivered to the room. Would definitley use this hotel again when going to Singapore.
Used to be great but...
from MarieK2.Great location - good hotel
from lostalotThe greatest advantage of the Novotel was its location - it is adjacent to all the Clarke Quay amenities (THE place for nightlife along the Singapore River), minutes walk from the local MRT station and also convenient to Orchard Road shopping (approx 15 minutes walk away).
The hotel sits atop a local mall, has an excellent swimming pool and is run by friendly and helpful dining room and porter staff who are only too willing to assist with any enquiry or difficulty you have. The reception staff are slightly stand-offish but again respond admirably should you have any dealings.
Try to book a superior or executive room if the budget allows - better room facilities and fantastic city views from the higher floors (well worth the extra especially at night). The walk-in shower was a great experience (especially after a long day trekking around humid Singapore).
Breakfast in the large airy dining room is slightly expensive (better to eat out for a cheaper experience) but there is plenty of choice. There is a chef available at all times to make freshly cooked "anything" that you might fancy.
There are two well-appointed restaurants in the hotel (cannot say if they were okay as we did not try them) and a bar area.
I had only one problem with the hotel - they tried to bill me for the breakfasts taken by my wife and myself although the price of these was included in the room rate. Although this was rectified immediately with no fuss, worth keeping and eye on your bill.
Overall, this hotel was just what we were looking for as a base to experience what must be one of the best cities I have visited - do yourself a favour and give both a try!
Okay hotel and location
from MelissaRA bit disappointed with Novotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberStaff was polite, helpful and efficient, but most lacked friendliness.
Excellent location: Metro station is about 5-10 minutes walking distance, Orchard Road (many fine shopping malls) and Chinatown (for a more ‘Asian’ touch) are about 15-20 minutes walking distance if one doesn’t want to use Metro or taxi.
Also, the hotel is located right next to modern, upscale nightlife area (rather pricy restaurants, most with seafood, and some American/Irish bars) situated alongside river. So, if you want to go out, it’s easy and safe and you don’t need a taxi. And in the evening (actually, all day), you can hop into a little bumboat and take a trip along the river and see many of Singapore’s sights.
The first 3-4 floors contain shops, such as a supermarket and a large electronics store. Also, there is a 24 hours mini-market and a Macdonald’s for those who want to save money off the hotel-minibar.
Hotel itself has good security (you need keycard to access floors where hotel rooms are. We had a superior room, so it was a bit larger than normal (bed king-size). Rooms very clean, sheets and towels exchanged daily (besides usual toiletry articles you also get daily small sachet with detergent, quite practical actually!). Bathroom contained both shower and bathtub.
We were on 5th or 6th floor, only got glimpse of river, so view not spectacular. Bad point: While room had small balcony, you could not open balcony door even one centimeter. We were told it’s for security reasons, but it somehow makes you feel claustrophobic and really imprisoned. Whatever happened to enjoying a quiet evening on your balcony with a drink from the minibar? Sitting in the room just doesn’t cut it.
Room atmosphere is very impersonal, it seems that Novotel Clark is pretty much the same as any Novotel all over the world. No personal touch, nothing to make you feel somehow nice. Only nice thing: bedside is equipped with lights-control that enable you to dim lights separately, quite practical.
Breakfast is plentiful, variety medium. The later you arrive, the less you find, since staff does not renew what runs out. For example, we arrived always 1 hour before end of breakfast time, and the cheese platter had only stupid pre-sliced toast-cheese left (while crumbs of camembert etc. indicated the variety had been larger before).
Sitting outside for breakfast is not recommended, since you first get a bit deafened by air-condition noise (it seems the central A/C is located somewhere close by), and second are totally neglected by waiters who do not consider it necessary to ever step outside and clean the table or bring you coffee or tea, or see if there is salt/pepper on table, except if you get up, go inside, ask for it.
The pool appears to exist mostly because it had to exist for a hotel of this class. We didn’t swim even once, even if it was hot and humid. You’d think that a swimming pool in an Asian country could have some touch of exotic flair, besides some sickly looking palm trees.
By the way, when you arrive, staff at entrance is very polite, helping you get out of car, carry suitcases etc. The day you leave, they ignore you and don’t even open doors. Quite disappointing to be shown so openly that once you’ve stopped paying, you’re not interesting.
So, the hotel is excellent for a few days, if one only cares about location and cleanliness. If one wants to experience that something special, then the hotel is not recommendable.
Would we stay there again? I don’t know. I’d probably first check to find out if we couldn’t find some other hotel at more or less same star and price range with good location that also offered a ‘warmer’ atmosphere. If we couldn’t find that, then yes, the Novotel is relatively good value for money.
Great location, thank goodness for the pool!
from SarahRCWe were extrmely happy with our time there, putting the pool to good use as it was extrmely humid. The room we had was a great size, amazingviews, the bed however was pretty hard, good for some.
The location is fantastic, we would walk downstairs to all the great restaurants and get amongst the buzz. The MRT station is also very close therefore very easy to access Orchard Rd and the airport.
We were surprised that on receipt of our bill we were charged for the cleaning of the room each day that we were there, this was not something we had experienced before so worth asking about.
Road to Hana Tour
from cpettesGreat for BIz Floors
from gwengineerOne caveat....ask about the bed in your room before accepting it. They are gradually replacing beds in the top floors and we got one of the old ones. A bedboard was the only fix and they had no other kings available. My back still hurts!!
Presentable with large rooms good location
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe room was showing some signs of age but was clean and of an acceptable appearance.
We had a nice view over the river and shops and eating places are close at hand. It was a good location.
Breakfast was a bit pricey but very good. Starbucks and Mcdonlds and other alternatives are close by for those on a budget.
All in all it was good value.
Clarke Quay Fab location
from A TripAdvisor MemberWhy I liked the Novotel ... the pool was big and not busy, you can get a River Taxi to see the Merlion outside your door (or a Rickshaw tour) and there are hundreds of restaurants and bars to choose from... close to attractions like China Town, Little india Harbour Front (for Sentosa) Also it is a road away from the Ministry of sound (although you would never have know as you can't hear the noise from the hotel)
The restaurants in Clarke Quay are quite pricey for Singapore but boat quay ( a 10 min walk ) is cheaper... or if you are a little more daring near the Fullerton there is a huge Hawker store area where they close off part of the road and you can get some truely amazing and cheap food.
Orchard Road is only a few stops on the MRT away for the shopping!!!
just so you know the mercedes taxis are double the price of the normal taxis
normal Taxi from the Airport to the Novotel is about $15 singapore Dollars in NWHs (and I don't know what I was more interested in the Novelty of the TV(watching the news) in the Seats or arriving in SIngapore!!!!!!!
Hope it helps
Top Local Tips for Singapore
Tourist bus tours There is an excellent bus tour operator to visit the city with various stops at attractions where you can get off and catch a later bus (they give you a schedule); it's inexpensive around 12 US. While waiting for the bus near the hotel, it became obvious that the next bus was a late but a tourist info booth operator told me not to worry it would be here any moments. A taxi stopped and told me that the bus was out of service for the next two hours and would give us a tour for the same price !!! I refused and sure enough, about 5 mins later here was the bus. So this was a taxi scam. Also on arrival at SIN airport, you have no choice but to take a limousine at 35 SGD while the return trip on a meter taxi was 12.80 SGD; the only way out would be to try and catch a meter taxi at departure level.
Can't really beat this for the money This hotel has the perfect location on Clarke's Quay and the facilities reflect the rate - good.
Drinks at Raffles Make sure you visit Raffles Hotel. But save some time for late evening drink when the hustle of the crowds subsides.
