Great Hotel - Not so friendly staff!

from aear27
We stayed at the New Majestic Hotel for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. We thought the hotel itself was amazing very different - small boutique with each room designed by a local artist we had the most amazing room with balcony and all the luxuries you would expect to come along with this type of hotel. The breakfasts were limited but perfectly adqeuate with fresh eggs and bacon/sausage to order and muffins/fruit and toast and fresh tea/coffee kept us going till lunch! It was in a fanastic location within spitting distance from the metro and easy walking distance to central china town. Not much nightlife near the hotel - in fact wouldnt venture into the local bars am sure some were brothels!!! Alhough the metro is only a couple of stops to Boat and Clarke Quays and a taxi wont break the bank on the way home. Loved the hotel but the staff were very frosty and snooty - the Manager was lovely and even gave us a gorgeous bottle of red wine to celebrate our honeymoon... staff need to loose the attitude as we found all the locals very friendly.

Highly recommend though for the individual rooms - good robes, products and location!!!

Nice Boutique Hotel

from Mahlwerk
This hotel is situated right at the edge of Chinatown. It has only aboout 20 rooms and is therefore very quiet. The rooms are all different as they were designed by different designers. All furniture is very stylish. The "standard" garden rooms all have a little outdoor terrace with a bathtub on it. You can have a nightly outdoor bath under stars which is actually quite nice. When we arrived we got a bottle of wine (which was not the best) delivered in our room. The amenities are from the well-known American cosmetics chain Kiehl's (quite similar to Bodyshop). Each morning you will get the newspaper Straits Times delivered to your room. Breakfast is served in the restaurant downstairs which is an award-winning cantonese restaurant in the evening. However, we did not have dinner there as we opted for the food stalls in the streets of chinatown for some satays. The staff was always friendly and helpful. There is free WiFi internet access all over the hotel. If you do not have a laptop you can get a Macbook at the reception for free to use in the lobby. A MRT station (train) is just 2 minutes away so that you have easy and quick access to other parts of the city.

Hip yet practical. Great staff

from CriticalChicagoan
A bit pricey, but themed rooms were cool (avoid the carpeted one...Sing is way too humid for that), staff was really friendly (see below) and the restaurant was top-notch. Young, chic locals dine there, so you know it is better than your standard hotel dining. The location was right in Chinatown, which is the new, hip area. The subway is only a block away, so can be on Orchard Rd in a few stops. The rooms had free wi-fi, IPOD doc, flat screen, DVD player, balcony, and was actually larger than their photos show. If alone, great for more than a few days. If with your partner, would recommend it for a few days. Didn't use the gym, but it was amazing for the size., and I am a major gym critic at hotels. Pool was cool also, but no one was in it.

The staff actually helped my GF, who got ill a few hours before our early morning flight back to the US. They called a doctor, but then called a couple of hospitals to see how fast we could get in. Raffles could see us right away, a staff member came with us in a taxi, we paid about $80 for a visit + medicaton (less than the doctor service), and were back at the hotel in about an hour. The staff member (forgot her name...feel bad about that!) made sure it all went smooth and stayed with us the whole time. This really is great service. I have read other reviews that the staff were young and inexperienced, but for us that worked out better. They told us the "cool" places to go, and again, went beyond the call-of-duty on the hospital thing. Our check-in was fine (they let us check out all the available rooms first as we didn't know which one to take) and so was check-out.

So yeah, stay here if you want a chic hotel in a hip neighborhood. One word of caution - the bathroom and showers have glass doors with no blinds...could be awkward if you are not "comfortable" with your mate!

Cool place for a few days in Singapore

from Food_traveller32
First impression was not very good. Young staff with little knowledge made the check in slow and not very welcoming.
On check out the staff was lovely, and since we left before breakfast they had made great take away for us.
The location is quit good with only 2 minuts to the subway.
The shower and bathroom products are great.

Lots of design, less hotel

from Peripatetic88
Choose this hotel if you like your interior design (and chairs especially), but avoid if you are bothered by excessive noise (see below) and poor front office staff.

Like many other visitors, I was very surprised by the poor reception staff. Arriving with bags from the taxi and no offers of help set a bad first impression, followed by six staff behind the desk, none of whom seemed to know what to do (ie check us in).

I live in Singapore and I've stayed in about 15 hotels in the city, so I'm used to normal Singapore service, which is usually much better than this. I'm also used to Singapore noise levels, but read on...

The biggest problem was the first room - called Pussy Parlour. Avoid this room at all costs. Even if you can survive the dreadful colour scheme, and the pink (literally) fluroescent sign on the wall, the room has connecting doors on both sides which mean you can hear your neighbours every move. We had a neighbour who spent most of the hour from 1am to 2am drying her hair - strange, but that's her choice. The hairdryer sounded like it was in the room with us. Around the same time the neighbour the other side came back and decide to carry on an impromptu karaoke session in-room....

Luckily we were able to change to a much better room the next night and recover lost sleep.

As noted elsewhere, the housekeeping staff are charming, and I'd recommend the restaurant for lunch - good service and some very good food. The lamb with carrot cake was excellent.

A nice place for a few days

from iamadude
Right in the centre of Singapore's China Town this hotel is very well located.

It is a boutique hotel. Only 30 rooms, each designed by a different local artist.

The rooms on the second floor each have a beautiful outdoor bathtub on a very private patio. Very cool!

A nice place for a short (2 or 3 day) stay in Singapore.

Very clean. Lovely bedding and nice staff.

Roms include a simple but very good breakfast.

Cool Rooms, Terrible staff

from FERU06
We stayed at the New Majestic Hotel for 3 nights during the last week of June 07.

Our first impression was bad, we arrived by taxi from the aiport and noticed that the staff clearly saw that we were arriving from their reception desk and yet made no effort to come out to help us with the baggage....
Even after getting inside, there was no welcome or anything. They just kept staring at us until we said "we d like to check in" although it was pretty obvious...
Then came the next disappointment, we came to Spore by a night flight from Paris, so we reached the hotel around 9h00am.
So after a 13hours of flight, we were hoping that they would let us check in early if our room was already available. The reception staff just told us that the room was available right now but that he could not let us check in before 12 because the usual check in time was 15h00 so if we wanted to check in right away we d have to pay an extra night fee....I could not believe my ears yet tried to ask him gently to let us check in right away since the room was available anyway and a few hours was not much of a big deal. But no was no, the earliest we got was 11h00...Not wanting to pick up an argument, we just decided to wander around for 2 hours but had a sour impression of the hotel staff.

Overall the staff was unfriendly except for 1 or 2 exceptions. They dont even say hello unless you do so....I m used to Spore service being efficient but rude yet it s always surprising that hospitality staff can act like that....

Other than service, the hotel is quite nice. The lobby is not as cool as it looks on pictures but the room was really nice. We had a room with an outdoor bathtub, the room itself was small but the outdoor bathtub was great. What a nice feeling to have a bath outdoor in Spore! One could almost feel like in a resort at night.
The design of the room was simple but cosy and modern. Yet I would not recommend it for couples who have just met as there is no real separation for toilets which can always cause some embarassment.

Location is Ok as it is 100meters away from a MRT station which connects to 2 lines but there is nothing much in the close neighborhood within walking distance which can be unconvenient when you dont feel like going all the way downtown by MRT.

Overall it is really a pity that the staff is not up to the design of the hotel. With a friendlier and more hospitable staff, this hotel could be the best place to stay in Spore for anyone sick of the same standard rooms of international chains.

So if you can overlook poor service and unfriendly staff, go for it, if service is a big part of your hotel experience then better dont give it a go.

Inspiring hotel - incredible design, out of this world!

from James_Thomson
This is a fantastic place to stay if you love interior design. The rooms are large, and the design is inspiring, with the latest modern designer furniture.

Each room has been done by a different designer, and I stayed in an Aquarium room and it was brilliant.

The lobby is fantastic with many designer chairs and lamps.

Many celebrities and generally a fashionable crowd stay here. The Australian rock band JET were staying there while I was there.

The service is average however the design is out of this world! I loved this hotel's design so much I will absolutely be back!

Rude reception staff.

from SeanHenry
My wife and I stayed at the New Majestic for two nights at the start of May 2007. We must admit that the New Majestic is an interesting boutique hotel with some unusual design features, so if you want something different then have a look. The problem with the New Majestic is the attitude of the reception staff particularly the girls. I believe, if this isn’t changed that it could ultimately be the hotels downfall. We never felt welcome at the New Majestic, which is very poor seeing that we are the customers. Oh, I must say that the lady that worked in housekeeping was very nice. I may sound like a guest that demands a lot, but I am not, its just nice to get acknowledged instead of being looked up and down like we are not "cool" enough to say in a hotel like The New Majestic. To sum it up in two words "Trendy / Disappointing"

try the difference...

from rc_traveller
If you're looking for something different, The New Majestic is for you. Perfectly located in the most vibrant district of Singapore, this hotel is unique and dedicated for stylish people.
Each room has its own style and has been decorated by a talented designer. The atmosphere is very trendy and even if the rooms are quite small, you'll feel very comfortable but try to choose a Designer Lifestyle room, a bit more expensive but much larger than the Garden Rooms. The cleanliness is perfect and the Kiehl's amenities is a "plus" for this very good boutique hotel.
Moreover, after a tiring day in the city, you'll find a very nice pool and an high tech small gymnasium for body exercise.
But, it's just above average because the management has to improve the quality of service which is not very professional (only one waitress for breakfast...) and not smily enough. If they want to provide a true "five stars experience", it would be great to extend the room service menu and to be more available for guests.
However, for less than 350 SGD breakfast included, this hotel is good for value and i'll choose it again when i'll come back to Sing'

Top Local Tips for Singapore

Great boutique shopping Orchard Street has it all (LOVE Club 21 at the Four Seasons gallery), but Arab St. has a lot of excellent local designers at really low prices.
