Recently travelled with an 8 month old baby from UK to Australia. We were promised an early check in and late check out the next day. After a very long flight from the UK we arrived feeling tired out and an upset baby in tow. The reception informed us that there was no room ready and we would have to wait at least 5 hours, not easy when you have an over tired 8 month old baby in need of a wash and change. The next day we received a call from reception wanting to know why we hadn't checked out, we had to remind them again that we had pre booked and paid for a late check out, we told them this at check in, but obviously didn't listen to us!

All of the receptionists at this hotel require training on organisation and communication. They do not listen to what is said.

The rooms at the hotel are ok, if a little small. The bar food was very average and the restaurants very expensive.

There were a few plus points, the luggage handlers were excellent and friendly and the pool area was nice.

I certainly would not stay at this hotel again. If you are a family travelling through Singapore give this hotel a miss.

Booked and paid for a deluxe room & only received superior. Staff at Front Desk quite rude & uncooperative. No clocks/radios in rooms, or refrigerators. Definitely not up to 4 star standard. Have stayed in much better equipped 3 star hotels. Would never recommend.

Stayed via Singapore stopover and had to book two rooms for family of four, told on check in that rooms would not after all be ajoining, but in the same breath was offered an executive suite with two roll away beds for our toddlers..boy what a room(s)! Found the staff more than helpfull and everything very clean and tidy, didn't want to leave! Only moan would be the changing rooms for the pool haven't been updated yet and leave a lot to be desired.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Furama Hotel Singapore

great location

from rick shelley
we stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and found our room to be more than adequate.
we were not sure if bathroom had been renovated but it was still ok.
Breakfasts were good as was the evening buffet dinner.
The location near Chinatown was great.
Overall a good hotel for a short stopover in Singapoere.

Great stopover hotel

from cookie_82
I'm surprised at the poor reviews that this hotel has received as we found it to be a perfectly good hotel, particularly for a stopover on your way to Australia or NZ.

The room and bathroom were both clean and comfortable. The lobby areas were impressive and the location (in Chinatown, but a short walk to the bars and restaurants on Clarke Quay) was ideal. Staff were helpful and polite on the whole.

The breakfast was nothing special, nor was the dinner we had on our first night, but there is so much fantastic food within walking distance, you can hardly complain. The bar is expensive (but so is all alcohol in Singapore) and was full of a large group who had come along with the entertainment so was a bit noisy.

Only one real downside - we could smell cigarette smoke in our room as some adjacent rooms are smoking rooms but, as our stay was only two nights, this didn't bother us too much.

Dirty, rude staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at.
The room was tiny, and looked as though it hadn't been cleaned, while the bathroom was equally as dirty.
Whenever I used the shower, the smoke alarm in the room went off, and despite calling reception several times while it was going, nobody ever came to turn it off.
The staff was very difficult to deal with. One member of staff in particular told a group of guests, who were waiting for a tour bus, to move from the only chairs they could find in the lobby which were outside the empty bar. The group then had to stand around as they weren't allowed to sit anywhere.
Despite being in a reasonably pleasant location, the hotel was a great disappointment.
I wrote a letter to the manager upon my return home, outlining my areas of concern and suggestions for improvement, but never heard back.

Great location and great views from executive floor

from sarahcallan1974
We stayed at the Furama City Centre Hotel for 3 nights in March 2006. We booked our room on ----. This was the first time we had used the site and it was easy and informative. We paid a total of SG$680, approximately £240 for the ‘Club Promo’ offer which gave us a room on an executive floor. The price included a complimentary welcome drink, tea/coffee and cookies throughout the day in the executive lounge as well as breakfast and evening cocktails (accompanied by hot and cold nibbles) in the executive lounge. The breakfast and nibbles were varied and very tasty. We were also given fruit on arrival and had an inclusive turn down service on the first night of our stay (although this should have happened every night, it did not).

We found all staff in the hotel, and particularly those in the executive lounge, to be very friendly and helpful.

We were very happy with our room which was located on the 22nd floor and had a fantastic view towards the river. The room itself was clean and very comfortable, with an enormous bed. There was a minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, TV, ironing board, and all the facilities you would expect of a business hotel. There was an odd stain on the bedspread which was not changed after it was pointed out, but it was far from a big issue. The bathroom had a bath and separate shower.

The hotel was in an excellent location. It was on a busy road but we could barely hear it on the 22nd floor. We were within easy walking distance of the river, Chinatown and the MRT underground system. We only used the latter to get to Sentosa Island as we found taxis were an efficient and cost effective mode of transport.

The hotel had a pool but it was closed for renovation when we were there. As a result the hotel arranged our transport to their sister hotel, about 10 minutes drive away, and refunded our return taxi fare.

In terms of things to see, we would definitely recommend the night safari. We arrived there at 9pm and walked round. We decided this was much better than taking their ‘tram’, for which you pay extra. We spent a day at Sentosa Island but were a little disappointed overall as it seemed a bit ‘false’ and the tram service was dreadfully slow and inefficient, unlike everything else we encountered in Singapore.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel, so cannot comment on their restaurant. We really enjoyed our meal at the Indochine Restaurant on the otherside of the river to the Fullerton Hotel, and found nice restaurant called Chong Mon Palace, serving Thai food, near Far East Square. For non-smokers, Singapore is a great place to be as it bans smoking in all indoor air-conditioned areas.

Very disappointed. Staff surly.

The lobby is well presented but the breakfast restaurant is in bad need of repair. The reception staff were surly and not very much help. We were supposed to be complementary upgraded however we were put in a small room next door to the only room on the floor which was being renovated (the walls chiselled and constant hammering). As we were staying with two young children, we complained and requested to be moved. They offerred to ask the workman to be more quiet! Finally after much backwards and forwarding, they finally agreed to move us (why it was such a problem I have no idea since they weren't even half full!) But they moved us to a smoking room despite our requests(supposedly no other one was available). Then we found out that there one and only pool was completely out of action as it was being renovated. After complaining about this, they begrudgingly offered to transport us to their sister hotel the Furama Riverfront only to use the pool and then transfer back (15mins drive each way). I said I would prefer to move to the other hotel for our entire stay (4 days), which they flat out right refused. Anyway, in summary, a mediocre hotel with poor service. Standard room is small (I believe that is the norm in Singapore) but the upgrade gave us a decent room with a nicely refurbished bathroom (separate bath and shower). The housekeeping are a bit slack and can clean the room anywhere from 10am to 5pm (each day they do it at a different time). However when done, was done well. We were in room 1104 which had a nice view. I personally wouldn't stay there again because I want a holiday not to fight with reception staff for a decent room.

Worst Hotel ever

from Jasminezu
I stayed at this hotel in Feb. 2006 for part of my honeymoon trip. This was the worst of the 5 hotels we stayed in out of 4 countries. The other hotels all greeted us with some combination of champagne/strawberries/chocolates. Nothing from this hotel.

In fact, when we arrived for check in at 6:00 pm, we were told that our room was not available and to come back in another hour. ( Their website says check in time is 12:00 noon!) I was exhausted after a 26 hour journey from Los Angeles, and explained that we could take another room, but was informed that no other rooms were available. My husband and I went to dinner across the street, and returned in 1 hour and 15 minutes, whereupon we were informed that the room was STILL not ready. When my husband then demanded to speak with a manager immediately, a room "suddenly" became available on a higher floor (15th).

The beds are as hard as park benches covered by a single flat sheet. When we asked for a featherbed or other accomodations, they brought in a torn, smelly old thermal blanket that wasn't even the size of the bed.

The bathroom smells of mildew, even after a round of housekeeping.

The free breakfast is a tired buffet of Asian/continental foods. Like other reviewers have noted, the food is lukewarm, and the hash browns are rubbery. They do not supply utensils for bread baskets, which results in patrons using their bare hands to rifle through the basket and returning rejected pieces. On 2 mornings out of 4, I found food encrusted onto the silverware and when I alerted my server to this, she actually exchanged it with the silverware on another table!

Horrible, horrible hotel. I would never stay here ever again.

Great location in Chinatown, Recently Renovated

from PandaExpress
Hotel recently renovated. They are still cleaning the outside and have a notice in the room about this taking place during the day. Took advice of other reviews and requested a corner room which was fine - quiet and very nicely done. We stayed in room 804. It was fine. Pillows are a little flat but we slept fine no problems. Quiet - didn't hear neighbors even though every room on our floor was booked. Seems like various rooms you can smoke in (unlike America where their are specific smoking floors) - the hallway was very faintly smoky, but the room itself was fresh smelling even though there was an ashtray in the room - we didn't smell a thing and we are very sensitive to that sort of thing.

Great location, one block from the Chinatown MRT station which made it really easy to do the walking tours in Chinatown and the colonial district that various guide books talk about.

Breakfast buffet was good, mix of asian and western food - the first hash browns we have seen in our entire southeast asia trip! Omlette station can make whatever your heart desires. The breakfast room doesn't look like it got updated like the rest of the hotel. It looks a bit dated.

Hotel can get very crowded in early evenings as a lot of Asians seem to use the hotel.

Staff was dry, helfpul and efficient as is everything in Singapore.

Bathroom was good size and good water pressure on the shower. Tub is a bit narrow for whatever reason. Room itself was good size, plenty of outlets to charge your stuff - remember to bring the adapter for Singapore plugs! Different than the rest of Asia.

If you need a taxi tell the bell man they have a little buzzer to summon one - otherwise you will be waiting a while.

Tipping the bellman for bringing your bags is apparently not custom so FYI the hotel staff remind you.

So-so hotel

from Rahwayan
Stayed 4 nights in November.
PROS: room was nice, reception staff friendly, location convenient between Clarke Quay and Chinatown MRT stations.
CONS: Housekeeping terrible...didn't make up the room until 4 pm daily (even though we were out by 9:00 am with a make up room sign posted). Requested additional blanket for each bed (due to thin topsheet/blanket) and they brought only 1, arguing that was all they had. Left only 1 bath towel for 2-person room and when we returned to discover this in the late afternoon, called housekeeping to request. Upon return in evening, still no towel and response from front desk was "housekeeping is closed." No newspaper on 3rd and 4th days and despite inquiry of the front desk, no response. While we were there, they had only lukewarm water for the 1st 2 nights, initially insisting that water temp was hot and only resolved the problem (which they later admitted was hotel-wide) on 3rd day.

Finally, although there is ample food at the breakfast buffet, it never varied and was rather blah (lukewarm and looked old).

In short, nothing special about this hotel.

Great stopover hotel

from fiorhi
Arrived at the hotel on our first evening to be told that the two adjoining rooms that we had been assured of were in fact down the corridor from each other, but in the same breath were offered an executive suite with two roll away beds for our two toddlers. This being what we wanted before booking we accepted and wandered to the room with trepidation. It was fantastic! If you can have one of these rooms do so! We had three huge windows overlooking the Singapore river/clarke Quay, one in lounge area one in bedroom and one in bathroom! The staff were all more than helpful, the room was kept imaculately clean. If I were to have one grouch it would be that the changing rooms by the pool have not been updated and are less than appealing.
The hotel is in the heart of Chinatown so you can just walk out of the door and explore, last time we were in Singapore we stayed in Orchard road, which is fine if you are a shopaholic, this time we felt we saw more of Singapore. The MRT station is only a block away from the hotel and really easy to use, and the Singapore stopover bus stops just a block in the other direction. Clarke Quay is within walking distance (with a 3&5 year old).
We had breakfast in the hotel on our last morning which was Ok but not brilliant, on the other mornings we just crossed the road outside the hotel and found various other places to eat. I hate to do this but having a 3 and 5 year old it may help others, there is the dreaded McDonalds over the road (but its much more fun exploring Chinatown!)

breakfast a disappointment

from AustraliaKristina
The accommodations were very comfortable, but the breakfast food was lukewarm - ie lukewarm hash browns and other fried food. This is not good. Also a poor selection of breakfast fruit - only about 3 types of fresh fruit and the same each day.

Top Local Tips for Singapore

MRT card Get a card and us and abuse it. An excellant way to get around.

The Night Safari is a must - do! I have never been this close to animals. Definately a must-see for adults and children alike!

MRT Pick a hotel near a MRT as trains are cheap and very regular
