Ok, but not the best

from ManchesterCaroline
With few other options available when we booked this hotel, we weren't expecting great things, having read other Tripadvisor comments, but were determined to give the hotel a fair shot.

In the end, it was much as expected - some good, some bad. Our room was quite spacious but the bathroom pokey. The pool wasn't bad - next to a busy road, but to be honest that wasn't a problem for us. The reception staff were helpful, concierge less so (we found booking a taxi through the concierge a lot more expensive than just waiting outside the hotel for a taxi to turn up).
Breakfast wasn't bad at all, and the hotel lobby was really quite impressive, but the decor in the rooms wasn't quite as good.

The main problem was the hotel's location; you need to rely on taxis to get to and from the city centre. Taxis don't take very long or cost that much, but the hotel's just too far out to consider walking in the heat of Singapore. The hotel's courtesy buses don't run frequently enough, but could come in handy if you know in advance what time you'll want to head into the centre. The main problem was getting a taxi back to the hotel, as one evening the taxi queues in town were massive and we were starting to think we'd be out all night (for this reason alone I'd recommend being central and so within walking distance of the subway system). Having said all that, the hotel is conveniently placed for the Botanic Gardens (well worth a visit), which suited my husband (a keen runner) down to the ground.

A few other minor gripes - the cleaners threw away my toothbrush; one night we were woken by our room phone ringing (we still don't know why!); and another morning we were woken by a phonecall to ask if we were ready for our breakfast to be delivered (which we weren't as we were still asleep, and it was still 15 minutes before the earliest time we'd asked for breakfast to be delivered) - and even after the phonecall, it took 30 mins for our breakfast to arrive, so we were a little bemused by that. All minor things individually I know, but together they were a bit annoying.

In summary, I probably wouldn't choose to stay there again, but it wasn't an awful hotel.

Massive disapointment.

We used Singapore as a stop over on our trip to South Island Singapore. We used several comparison sites for hotels and decided to stay at the Copthorne Orchid, Dunearn Road, Singapore. We paid for an upgraded room in the Plymouth Wing. When we found our room we were very disapointed. The carpets were grubby, the settee had unknown stains and the net curtains had not been washed since they had been put up! We requested a change of room, but were advised that this was not possible as the hotel was full. The hotel seemed to be full of people either on business or on a stop over. As such the hotel was not bothered with any poor impact as most guests only had to suffer for a couple of nights. Having said the room was poor, the staff at the hotel were pleasant and tried to be helpful. The other disapointment was in the hotels location. It is described as being "in a quiet residential area". They forgot to mention the eight lane highway right outside the hotel. If we visited Singapore again, we would stay more in the centre of the city, it would have been quieter.

Just a little Out of the Way

from shipper1
The 7 night stay I had at this hotel last month was OK.
The hotel is situated with a duel carriageway highway down one side & quiet suburban streets down the other sides.
The rooms are fine & clean.
The main restaurant offers an excellent buffet breakfast & it's dinner specials are worth a try (I only had it once). The restaurant staff seemed very pleasent & helpful.
It is a bit isolated & requires a taxi or the courtesy bus to get anywhere. Next time, I will look for a more central hotel where one can easily walk to various restaunts etc.

Crummy, crappy and Smelly - AVOID

from SA_travellers
AVOID the Copthorne Orchid Singapore. There was NOTHING great about this place. The location is problematic as it is NOT central at all and although the hotel offers a free shuttle bus service to Orchard Road, this is inconvenient and restrictive. More importantly than this, the hotel is dark and get the feeling is was grand 30 years ago, but not anymore!
The breakfast was ok, but not great.
The rooms are large but we stayed in a very smoky room which was gross, even though we smoke!
There is a nice pool but no ambience.
We arrived early (8am) and waited for our room (1 hour) and had breakfast which we were charged for....this just seemed unfair as we left early on our last day (5am) and did not have breakfast - the hotel was not prepared to "swop" breakfasts.....petty but at +- $50 / person, it was just nasty!
Staff were not at all friendly, but this seemed to be the Singapore way.
Room had no view but did have a nice verandah and it was clean with air-con.
We definitely would not stay here again. There MUST be better options: try something else.

My girl friend and I stayed there in July 06, the location is a little far out from the hustle of downtown Singapore but still not far from places by taxi. The do have a shuttle bus going down to Orchid Road but we didn't go with that as times did not suit us.

The reception staff we found to be not very helpful, i.e when we arrived there they didn't seem friendly and also when asked to use the internet they were not very responsive so I never used it.

Located in the ritzy area of Singapore.

The pool was great but probally not as quite as what I would of hoped -it is right next to main road!! The gym is equiped with exercise bikes, running machine and weight set.
There is a great massage centre within hotel, just keep your husbands at bay with only limited cash for normal massage (if you get what I mean!!).

The first room we had was okay but the toilet didnt flush so we were moved to a bigger room overlooking Raffles Club (not Raffles BAr). The bigger room was much nicer, though with both rooms an upgrade would do some good.

We didnt eat in, but a service station is not far away so you can buy drinks and snack food there at a fraction of price of mini-bar.

In my opinion there is other hotels closer and for much the same price so even though it was okay and userable prehaps look elsewhere.

Not Worth A Penny

from nz_asia
This hotel was booked as part of SINGAPORE AIRLINES STOPOVER holiday package and whilst it was adequate the property was tired and ageing, the air conditioning struggled to maintain a cool temperature to sleep. This hotel is not close to Orchard Road and you pretty much have to catch a cab to anywhere you want to go, so the location somewhat inconvenient. We only stayed here for two nights and next time in Singapore we will be choosing another hotel.

Nice motel, average location for tourists

from BigTripGirl
I stayed here for 11 nights, it was quite good, but I initially thought a little pricey since it was during the recession. Though I was given 2 nights for free so that is okay.

Fridge in room, room was very clean and the housekeeping very friendly. They were putting in water pumps at the time b/c it took 15 minutes for hot water to become hot.

There was a bus to Orchard Rd (Free) and the public transport is close by.

The restaurant was good but very pricey. Check the price of fresh juice before ordering it!!!

It was not within walking distance to anywhere, except the bus stop. Taxis to and from are cheap.

You can book tours in the lobby in the morning which was good.

I have since been back to Singapore but did not stay here based on location.

Book Another Hotel

from Smudgers
We were booked in for 2 nights en route OZ to UK. We booked a superior room in the main building based on the fact that the hotel was given a 4 star rating and that the descriptions offered on the internet seemed well up to that standard.
Arrived mid evening, hotel was very busy with large number of buses having just arrived with youths apparently checking in. Our first impressions wwere that the premises looked seriously in need of a re vamp and looked more in keeping with being described as a back packers stop over. The first room offered was damp, smelled and had black patches on the walls. We also found the bed sheet to be torn and the lid of the w/c to be broken. The 2nd room offered was marginally better but nothing like the internet description.
Hotel is too far out from the centre, on a difficult section of the road system and as a result taxi drivers were reluctant to make the journey back to the hotel.
Would not wish to stay there again.
Spoilled the end of an excellent holiday.

No, not this one!

from expectant customer
The are more negatives here than positives.
I stayed 1 night on the Sydney-London stopover.
It was a disappointment after staying in another Copthorne in Singapore. Yes, it is tired, and getting old, and it needs a makeover in most places.
The room was OK, but needs refreshing.
The corridors from reception to my room, out the back, reminded me of an old American motel, not a nice Hotel.

Receptionists themselves were fine, reception can get very busy, depending on flights/time of day. There are good areas to sit around reception. I spent time relaxing by the pool, it was about 2 star standard. Tired, grass needs thickening up, nobody came to take a drink order at all. Not the best place to spend time.

The restaurant was OK, in a 3 star motel kind of way. Adequate, gets food inside you, but again, not the best that Singapore has to offer.
Summary: Find another hotel if possible, otherwise expect mediocrity.

Tired and not close to Orchard Road

from JenBlak
This hotel was booked as part of QANTAS holiday package and whilst it was adequate the property was tired and ageing. We were shifted from our first room after night one as the air con ( which is essential in the tropics) had leaked all over the carpet. The second room had a blood stain on the curtain and the air conditioning struggled to maintain a cool temperature to sleep. The breakfast and the pool and gym were good. Contrary to the QANTAS brochure this hotel is not close to Orchard Road and you pretty much have to catch a cab to anywhere you want to go,so the locationis somewhat inconvenient. We stayed here for three nights and next time in Singapore we will be choosing another hotel.

Top Local Tips for Singapore

The MRT The MRT is really good & is the best way to get around the island. The stored value cards are worth buying & can also be used on the buses. At the end of your trip you can get any value left on the cards refunded at the station ticket office.

excellent Singapore is probably the has one of the best public transport systems i have travelled on.

TAXIS Taxis are resonalble - from airport to thehotel SD$35 - we used taxis to get back in the evenings as the free shuttle service runs till 10pm.
