Great breakfast

Good breakfast, comfortable rooms, and the air conditioning was controllable! (Many Singapore Hotels have air-conditioning better suited to refrigerators than to bedrooms.) Friendly staff. Great location, away from Orchard Road shops, a block away from MRT station.

Beware!

From the time I booked this hotel (prepaid), I had trouble, and it took Expedia two telephone calls for the hotel to "find" my reservation. When I arrived, they told me I had an upgrade, to the Club Floor, WITHOUT BENEFITS! Which meant, I walked to the elevator with people getting all the benefits of a Club Floor! I had prepaid for a Premier (standard, superior, deluxe, PREMIER) room, and when I asked for an explanation as to why I received nothing extra, (same size, and almost the same amenities of a standard room) I was given a convoluted (see Trip Advisor Member's Zephyr Hotel, Hanoi experience!) answer, and gave up. The utter indifference of the front desk was the topper. Never again! Traveller, beware!

Great location

Have just come back from 4 nights at Carlton Hotel, Singapore. Loved this hotel and would definitely stay here again, purely for the location. The hotel itself is very clean, maybe a little dated, but the fact that the MRT stop is less than 5 mins. walk, large shopping complexes within walking distance and the Bugis Street markets and more shops/restaurants, it is great. You can virtually walk anywhere from this hotel, Clarke Quay, even Little India.

Only gripe would be no in-room safe or ironing board, but these were minor. Nice pool area, quick lifts, quiet hotel, what more could you ask for.

wonderful stay

We used this hotel as a stop over for Australia both journeys. An excellent hotel. The staff were wonderful with my 20 month old daughter who was getting abit restless when we were sat waiting for transport to the airport. She even got recognised again 3 weeks later when we were on our way home. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Singapore. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, an excellent choice of food, a great little shop in the reception area with some gorgeous traditional costumes and reasonably priced too.

Great for price

We stayed here as a stop over for Australia trip for a couple of nights and thought the place was great for the price. It's located in a good district and is one block away from the famous Raffles Hotel.

Swimming pool was good for a dip and the hotel restaurant in the lobby had a nice menu at a decent price if you wanted to crash after your first day.

Great hotel in a great location

This is a solid 4 star hotel in great location. You can walk to the Marina and Orchard Road. I liked everything about it and had no complaints. I would highly recommend it.

OK - but......

First impressions were not great - the corridor carpets were badly stained (or possibly recovering from an attempt to clean them). I discovered half-empty bottles of shampoo and soap in the shower, and despite having asked for a double bed I discovered I had two singles, but I was too tired by then to argue the point. Otherwise the room was nice enough and the breakfast was good.

Massage facilities are very reasonable - 40 Singapore dollars for an hour. Worth thinking about if you have a late onward flight, as you get the chance of a last shower before the journey.

On the return journey I stayed at the Raffles Plaza - infinitely better for about the same price

Mixed Feelings

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. Got a good deal as part of a package with Singapore Airline. Upon arrival, lovely doorman took care of our luggage even before we entered into the hotel. Quick check in, bell boy who brought us luggage was really helpful and friendly. We were given a smoking room, my friend requested to change to a non-smoking room and this was done within 15 minutes. However, another bell boy came who was clearly in a bad mood and didn't help us with the luggage.

Room itself is a bit below expectation, it's clean and the beds, duvet and pillows are comfy. View is ok, no problem with the shower and a/c. However, the bathroom is a bit small and we had to battle with the bathtub plug, it's stuck and the water couldn't go through. First time we called reception, someone was sent within 20 minutes and took out the plug. However, the cleaning lady wasn't aware and put the plug back in the next day. So we have to call reception again and it took over an hour and a half and 4 calls to reception and housekeeping before someone finally shows up to fix the problem. Was quite stressed out as we would like to shower before we go out and we ended up wasting over an hour sitting and waiting in the room.

Also needed two dresses steamed, they picked them up Thu. afternoon and I was told they will be ready Fri. before 11am. Was charged S$24 for this which is probably reasonable for 4 star hotels. However, nothing appeared by Fri. noon and so had to call the laundry to check and they were then sent back to me.

Breakfast were included and they are quite nice. We requested for late check out but they were unable to accomodate as the hotel is quite full. So we checked out at noon, left our luggage in the lobby and were able to use the swimming pool, towels and showers for the afternoon before we left. Also, there was no safe in the room and therefore we had to leave our passport and cash in our luggage.

The chimes is right opposite and the Raffles shopping mall is less than 10 minutes walk which has a supermarket and a food court. The location is not bad, takes around 15 minutes and S$6-7 to take a cab to get to Wisma Atria on Orchard Road. Needed to book a cab to get to a friend's wedding and the reception took care of this without a hitch.

It is difficult to give an overall impression and there were both outstanding and appalling services. I guess if it wasn't the bathroom incident, I would probably return to this hotel.

Great location and good value

We just stayed 3 nights. Great location, one block from MRT station, shortish walk to riverside and esplanade. Deluxe room was spacious and fine overall, bathroom clean but perhaps looking a bit tired. Excellent breakfast buffet to suit most tastes.
Decent pool and gym.

Raffles hotel is opposite. A great selection of restaurants and bars (western/japanese)at Chijmes centre across the road. Inhouse noodle restaurant good food and value. We booked online directly from the hotels website which seemed to be the cheapest option. Would go back to this hotel.

Just stayed at the carlton-sinapore.read the good reports from this site first.our visit was the first time to singapore,a stop over of 3 nights.on the internet from the actual hotel was a rate of 85. dollers per night-not inc breakfast.the price list was much more,inside the hotel!
we found the hotel location-PERFECT!
we took the train from the airport-train system brill!!!
rooms were nice/big bed/nice new bathroom.
great pool & area-just what you need after a humid day!!!
didnt have breakfast-so so cheap out and about!!!
lots of airline cabin crew and staff use this hotel-think that speaks volumes!!!

Great Value and Location

Singapore Airlines put us up for a night in the Carlton while we were passing through Singapore. I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. It was modern, clean and well located downtown. There was a lot to see within walking distance, and the restaurant had a wide variety of foods. I would recommend the Carlton since it offers good value for the money.

Top Local Tips for Singapore

Taxis Taxis in Singapore are so cheap to use, we used them a lot but make sure you get a metered one, blue in colour and check the rates if your not sure where your going.

taxi company Use the BLUE taxi company,they have reasonably new cabs,take you directly where you ask to go. Some of the others took us on tours or long way

MRT - load up your card With the regular use of the convenient MRT, take advantage of loading up an MRT ticket with prepaid credit. It saves the regular need for $1 deposits on your card. Very easy! Also, don't be afraid to walk around, you might find it only a 5minute walk between some inner MRT stations! Plus you get to see the interesting surrounds this way!
