Bintan Lagoon would struggle to be 3 stars

I booked a Bintan Lagoon Villa for a short break with our 2 young children. I wanted the facility of a kitchen so I could prepare meals for the kids. I dare not use the kitchen area in the villa for fear of disease. Filthy is the best way to describe it, greasy walls, dirty and heavily stained work surfaces, cooker was disgusting. Overall the fittings and furnishings probably looked fine in the 1970's and have not been cleaned since, they are frayed, dirty and stained, the beds are uncomfortable and made me wanted to sleep with my clothes on, the bathrooms have mould growing on the walls. The floors have not seen a mop for quite some time, it would be the ideal place to breed bacteria if you were looking for a biological adventure holiday. Housekeeping consisted of clean towels where the previous days where piled in a heap by the front door for a collection a day later, dirty plates and glasses were also left by the font door from the previous guests and were not cleared for 2 days until specifically requested. My partner called housekeeping and asked for some bleach with the intention of taking things into her own hands, no surprise "we dont have bleach".
The leisure facilities are amazing, no need to worry about the children making a mess in the kids club, it is devoid of any toys. However you can get to enjoy watching the employees participate in the staff ping pong championship, you will just have to wait your turn to play or may be it was winner stays on and you have to challenge them, I didn't want to interrupt the fellow employee crowd that had gathered to watch. The beach front is amazing white sands and azure blue sea where you can relax and watch bare chested male employees demonstrate their skills on 4 wheel drive quad bikes and jet ski's. The food is grossly over priced and of poor quality, the service is poor, the hotel is an unclean, poorly maintained and in need of repair, such a shame as it is located in a fantastic setting. The hotel is mostly self service, at breakfast you have to search to find someone to serve the tea or coffee, at the pool you have to go behind the counter to seek out a towel for yourself. I really thought this hotel was 4 star and was amazed when the manager told me it was 5, the only thing that is 5 star in this hotel is the prices, it is terrible and you will be disappointed, I would not recommend this hotel.

Tips for anyone going to Bintan Lagoon Resort: Bring your own cup noodles/dumplings/snacks. The meals will really rip you off. We had to pay $35 for 5 miserable chicken wings and the same price for a stale looking piece of fish called 'red snapper'. It was just ordinary fish fillet which can probably be bought for $2. And worse still, these (3 portions costing $105) came in a single plate. No pride in the food at all. 3 pieces of prawns was $48. The waiter refuse to let us dine unless we ordered one of these main courses for the above cut throat prices. The corn and veg were stated in the main menu, but we were told they don't come under main dishes. ?! And the staff at karaoke were extremely rude. We were singing halfway when they came in to ask for payment. And my mother had to rummage through the bag for a long time and had to ask me what the conversion rate was. Couldn't the staff tell her how many rupiah it cost? And can't she see its not exactly an appropriate time to ask for money? Chased her out and asked her to charge to the room. Of course, that 1 hr cost like $50 and even though there was not a single person in the main room we were told we had to get a private room since we were not getting any drinks.

The only way to get any value for money if you stay here is to find a way to squeeze 6 people into a room - book a room for 3 and turn up with 3 more who can take the taxi in (will be cheaper) and bring cup noodles for lunch and dinner, remembering to pack more bread, sausage and whatever you can from the breakfast buffet.

Overall bad customer service, inauthentic experience (everything's charged in SGD) and total rip-off, the anger of which will remain with you everytime you see chicken wings.

Very bad place to stay. Total exploitation of their guests. You have now choice in dinning, tours or souveniers other than those offered to you by the resort at exorbinate prices. You cannot even leave the resort without paying the resort over 100 S$ for one thier special taxis, the only ones allowed inside the barbed wire gates. They also play games by charging you in Sing$ for everything and then coverting to Indonesian currency (at miserable rates) at checkout if you can't pay in Sing$ or try to use a credit card. I cant think any reason to charge you Sing$ in Indonesia. It appears to be just one more way to rip off its guests. Do not make the mistake of going there!
