Top Local Tips for Manila
Avoid the carriages in Manila! On 9:30am May 11 2008, we, 4 persons got on 2 carriages near Bayview Park Hotel to Intramuros. The coachman agreed to charge us 50p per carriage to Fort Santiago at first. And in order to avoid any misunderstanding, we confirm the route and price with the coachman 3 times. After several minutes, our 2 carriages were separated deliberately, and even went the wrong way, since I got a compass. Although we asked our coachman to stop and let our friends’ carriage to catch up, he said yes, but did no. Finally, we totally lost our friends and went far way from our destination. When we were passing a bridge, my husband asked our coachman to stop, because it was totally the wrong direction. The coachman stopped and said atrociously, “Give me 50 dollars and you can go!” I said “No! We agreed 50p! Let me get off.” Suddenly, the coachman took out a half meter long iron stick and hit the armrest hardly, “Pay 50 dollars!” He shouted several times…Since it was the daytime and several jeepneys were passing by, we were not so scared. I waved my hands to the outside and shouted, “Help! Help! Call the police!” The people on the jeepneys were all looking at us with surprise. The coachman hit his iron stick and shouted again and again… Found us not give in and asked for help, and a lot of people passed by, the coachman let us get off. We paid him 50p as promised and left. At that time, we didn’t know where our friends were and were so worried, because they speak only limited English. With the help by the local people, we returned to the hotel and asked for help from the securities of the hotel. Fortunately, our friends came back about 20 minutes later safely and their coach wasn’t a criminal! We went to the police station near the hotel and showed them the pictures of the coachman. Only the face of my friends’ coachman can be seen very clearly. They found another coachman and got the name and company details of the bad guy. But the bad guy had run away and the police agreed to found him. Maybe not every coachman in Manila is criminal, but for your safety, avoid the carriages absolutely! If you still want to have a try, remember, never, never, never after darkness!
