Taxi firms in Port Moresby Port Moresby is a sprawling city so you are likely to have to use taxis. I found that Scarlet Taxis, tel 323 4266, were pretty reliable and had clean cabs with meters - though fares are quite high, and cabs can sometimes be rather slow in arriving at busy times. Another good firm I used was Red Dot, tel 311 3257. Their cabs don't have meters (well, some have them installed but they don't work) so you have to ask for a price in advance, or ask the driver to radio back for a price. They seemed to cost about the same as Scarlet Taxis - eg, about US$10 to go from Town to Waigani district.

The Air Niugini/Qantas flights are unfortunately often delayed or cancelled and you need someway to get back to a hotel. Taxi's at the airport are dirty, expensive and can be dangerous (and aren't generally available early in the morning anyway). When travelling to Port Moresby, spend some time arranging airport transfers (and maybe choice a hotel such as the Airways Hotel because of its convenience to the airport - 5 minutes drive).
