Being a diver and military historian, I went to Saipan for scuba and batttle sites. Hotel luxury was not a high priority, but I wanted one in Chalan Kanoa. The Gardenia was far from luxurious, but was clean, comfortable, and - most important to me - close to Japanese shore bunkers and American Sherman tanks still sitting out in the lagoon.
