Top Local Tips for Wellington

wellington closes on sundays Each time we go to wellington we forget that many shops and almost all dealer art galleries are closed on sundays. We spend saturday getting there and finding a restaurant, intending to spend sunday shopping or visiting the galleries, then get out on sunday morning and find everything is not open and the stereets are quiet. We often end up going for a walk around the waterfront instead which is nice on a fine day.

Perfect tourist city Wellington is a wonderful, wonderful city. If you have young children its small size makes it manageable and fun. You can grab a taxi to most places for about $10. There are great hotels, restaurants, shops. Te Papa museum is a really enjoyable day out for kids whatever the weather. The Botanic Gardens, Karori Reserve and Otari-Wilton's Bush are all cheap and accessible by public transport. Katherine Mansfield's house is just up at Thornton. Going out on the public ferry into the treacherous but beautiful harbour will set you back $40 but you'll see dolphins, birds and beaches (they're not great beaches but I say that as an Australian). If you want to go further afield rent a car and try the wine at Martinborough or drive to the stunning Kapiti coast.

bus verus shuttle The Stagecoach Airport Flyer is good value for money $5.50 into the city and quicker than the shuttles and taxis as there is a special bus tunnel if you don't have much luggage or your luggage is on wheels and you are staying central city the bus is a good option
