By New Zealand service standards this is a great hotel. Location is good, hotel is fine, but the service is what makes this place shine. It is rare in New Zealand to find such a high level of care. Well done!

The place to stay in Wellington

Over the years I have stayed at most hotels in Wellington, but by choice I would always come back to the Intercontinental. The location downtown is excellent. Many rooms have great views over the harbour. The pool and fitness area are well worth visiting. The rooms are nicely decorated and equipped. The staff are pleasant and efficient. If you can, go for one of their weekend package deals - or ask your employer nicely if you can stay here on business. This hotel is, in my opinion, a credit to the staff and the ICH chain.

InterContinental Hotels can be a bit impersonal - not this one!

Having been in New Zealand for a month we had become used to the friendliness of the staff in Hotels, especially Reception Staff, the InterContinental was no exception, friendly without being over familiar (how very British that sounds!). Apart from the rooms being a little on the small side I found it difficult to fault this hotel. I would reccommend upgrading to the Club rooms which are situated on the top two floors. They are particularly good value as guests are offered complimentary afternoon tea, post pre dinner drinks with canapes and continental breakfast (we made good use of the pre-dinner drinks). The staff in the Club Lounge were, once again, friendly and helpful. They arranged for the hotel limousine to take us to the airport the next morning. The cost was hardly more than a taxi (NZ$30) and the driver was charming. Altogether a memorable stay.

This urban hotel has a great location in the middle of downtown Wellington, near the ferry terminals to the South Island. It is a modern high rise, the staff is friendly and the in-house restaurant quite good. The rooms are a tad small, and overall the hotel is a bit "worn" and needs some refreshing with new carpet and the like. Still, even an "average" Intercontinental is likely to be a cut above, as is this hotel in Wellington.

Great location

After a day of travel there's few things better than checking into an InterContinental. They are all over the world and are consistently a warm and welcome place to stay. The one in Wellington is no exception. great location with a descent restaurant and bar. We had a suite that was on the small side, but on the same floor as the newly renovative spa and gym. The hotel is just a block from the water front and from the main shopping area downtown. I wish we had stayed longer.

In Love in Wellington

On a 2 week jaunt through NZ on our honeymoon, we spent one blissful night at the Intercontinental in Wellington. It was divine! Upon arrival we were upgraded to a corner room overlooking the harbor with a giant King bed. Just what the doctor ordered after the 8 hour drive from Auckland! We had mineral water, mints, fruit - all the creature comforts! As a bathroom fanatic, I was very pleased. I still have the little rubber ducky that shared my bath with me - post sauna & swim in the glass-top pool, of course.
Service was lovely - we were booked on points & upgraded when we arrived. Our bags were taken up for us as we relaxed at the bar with a glass of wine (on the house) & talked about plans for dinner. The concierge recommended the most delicious Northern Italian place for dinner & we came back stuffed & fell into bed.
Breakfast was fine, but we were in a rush to catch the ferry to the South Island, so we didn't linger. It was a perfect night in Wellington & I would love to visit again!

A bit small for the bucks

King club room but a bit small and rather basic - did not feel 5 star. Lobby resembles a railway station at times with little charm.

We've just spent a beautiful weekend at the InterContinental, taking advantage of their Luxury Break package. I've stayed in many hotels over the years in Wellington through business and pleasure and would only ever stay at the InterContinental. There are so many little extras supplied: rubber ducky in the spa bath, chocolates and mineral water at bedtime, great sauna, spa and pool with a glass roof so you can see the moon while you swim. Lovely service in the gym area as well. Apples and mineral water at check in, welcome fruit and biscuit platter in your room - superb Concierge service providing maps and advice at no charge. But the best of all has to be the breakfast. By far the the most extensive I've seen in a long time - from bircher muesli through to french toast, waffles and the standard eggs, bacon, fruits, pastries etc. Plus you can also order from a separate breakfast menu as well at no extra cost when you purchase a B&B deal - if only our appetites could manage all that in one sitting! Immaculate and professional. We were there while 2 conferences were going on and had perfect peace and quiet. I recommend the King Deluxe rooms as these are corner rooms with nice views and layouts. Just perfect, with plenty of staff on hand and a thoroughly 5 star level of service. Well done to the management of this hotel. Don't stay anywhere else.

An incredible experience!

Myself and my fiancee arrived in Wellington after a ten day tour of the north island. We had been staying in hostels, etc. the whole trip so we decided to stay at the InterContinental the last day before flying to CHC. We dropped off our rental car off in the morning so we had to drop our bags at the hotel. The staff were great and accepted our bags, telling us to enjoy the day and they would place the bags into our room when it came available.

Upon our return we were surprised to discover that we had been checked into a great room on the Club InterContinental floor. Our bags were in the room and within a few minutes we had received a call from the front desk asking if we were satisfied with the room. Later we were brought complimentary chocolates, robes, slippers, and water.

The pool was fabulous and we had dinner at Arizona's (Restaurant in the lobby), very nice.

Overall a fantastic hotel and a great experience. We were lucky to get the room on the Club floor and if you have the same luck you will have a great stay.

Top Local Tips for Wellington

Obtain local guide books At an early stage pick up local tourist guide brochures, they contain coupons for savings on dining (including hotel restaurant) and attractions.

A great museum Take a walk along the harbour and around to Te Papa. Great museum for all the family and you could spend easily a day here. Best of all its free.

Things to do with young kids Walk through the docks and see the cranes and container ships. Great play area with fantastically long slide on waterfront between docks and main museum. Cable car ride is fun and the botanical gardens at the top are lovely with a great kids playground and another wonderfully long slide. The trip to see the seals is long (1 hour drive) and quite bumpy so be warned, kids might feel car sick.
