shame about the staff

from IzzieB
We stayed at the hotel Ibis Wellington on the 24th,25th and 26th August. As we checked out they were commencing renovations of the lobby- very noisy.

The hotel is well located and you can walk to all the major attractions, cable car ( take it at night to see the lights of Wellington and visit the observatory), parliament is an easy walk, it is close to the TSB arena, Te Papa and the maritme museum. It is a great location to stay but avoid the restaurant and don't rely on the staff to help you. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and Mc D's and Burger King all within a 1 block walk.

I was staying on business but took my two children with me. We booked the room and dinner package. I phoned before booking online to check if the room dinner rate included one adult and 2 kids meals( as the website advertised kids at 50% of the adult price). I was assured this was the case so made my booking. At checkout I was charged for ALL the meals despite my stating every-time I used the restaurant that we had paid for the room and dinner deal. I pointed out that I had phoned before hand to clarify that the children would be included in the room rate. They told me I was wrong and that the dinner was only for one person per night.

The restaurant food was disappointing and Also there was no childrens menu, although when I said on the last night we would not be eating at the restaurant because there was no kids food, I was told there was and that the restaurant staff just hadn't offered it???? My daughters ordered the chicken burger which when it came was a piece of chicken breast overcooked and stringy between two bits of toast bread with salad leaves. Not a 5 year olds dream meal. My meal also was disappointing and overcooked and had I realised I was paying full price I would have sent it back. The service in the restaurant was slow and unfriendly.

The room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was pleasant. There are only tea and coffee making facilities no toaster provided. There is a guests laundry room where you can use the washing machine $2 and the dryer $2. A vending machine is on the first floor.

The day of checkout I asked the staff to store our luggage until 4pm( no problems) and asked them to order an airport shuttle to collect us from the lobby at 4pm. They booked the shuttle but on our return I was told they had sent the shuttle away as we had checked out. I phoned the shuttle and they said the driver had been told we had checked out and left that morning and the shuttle was unable to return to collect us in time for our flight.I struggled with 5 bags & 2 children out to a taxi stand while 3 staff looked on.

After returning home I wrote to the manager and he informs me they have now changed the wording of their room/dinner rate to show that it is for only one adult meal.

Nice Cheap Accommodation

from kiwikitten_99
We stayed one night here - but have stayed here previously.

We were in a non smoking room - the duvet cover has two big smoke burns in it!!!!

Nice clean room - huge king size bed. Nice quiet location.

Asked for a wake up call at 0400 to catch a plane - lucky we set our alarm as the wake up call never came. Lucky they have booked our taxi to the airport.

Nice place to stay if you don't intend on spending too much time in your room - good location for restaurants and shopping.

Would stay here again.

Great Value

from kbecnz
A very clean, modern and friendly hotel. Amenities are quite basic but good value considering the price. If you want a comfortable nights sleep in a clean hotel with no nasty surprises this is an excellent choice. Very friendly staff. One of the best locations in central Wellington.

Totally Bland

from TirotaiTelegraph
All the facilities were present but the hotel is a business hotel with no character. Internet charges very high, they need a better pricing model.

Terrible Booking Policy

from Singapore_tourist
I made a booking for one night at the Hotel Ibis Wellington approximately two months in advance of my day of arrival, through the Ibis website, and had to pay NZ149 (including GST) in advance. This was termed a "hot deal" and I recall the only "deal" on at that time.

Subsequently I found I had to cancel due to a change in my travel plans which had to do with drive times and the North-South island ferry schedule. I enquired with the hotel about 4 weeks in advance on cancelling and was informed that all bookings done through the website were non-refundable and non-changeable, regardless of advance notice being given. This was also because the NZ149 price was a "hot deal". Incidentally the price did not seem to differ from the hotel's regular deal.

I'm not sure what century the Ibis hotel is caught in to impose a non-cancellation non-changeable booking policy over its website but I certainly do not see any loss they would have suffered from my cancellation, it having been a good 4 weeks in advance. I can certainly understand a charge being imposed if the cancellation was made 7 days prior, but 4 weeks is ridiculous.

I've written to them to consider changing this rigid booking policy, especially in the light of tourists' travel plans but was given a stony reply that my cancellation was confirmed and no other charge would be made apart from the one already charged to my credit card.

I've enjoyed my past few trips to New Zealand, but I certainly won't be staying at any Hotel Ibis in the future.

modern, clean and cheap

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here in September 2004.
This Ibis certainly is, unlike many Ibis hotels in France, more a modern and upper class hotel.
The hotel is located at the heart of the CBD in Wellington.
The hotel seems pretty new. It is beautifully, clean and new on the in- and outside. The rooms are averagely spacious and equipped with Sat TV, telephone and air-condition. The rooms are simple but tastefully furnished. The bathroom is quite small and narrow but tastefully furnished. The hotel was very clean the staff was friendly and helpful.
I stayed here for $142NZ per room per night. This is a good value for your money, because of the location and the furnishings of the hotel.

I certainly would consider to stay in the Ibis again.

fine place to stay

from clementine05
The best thing about the IBIS is the price (less than $100 NZ/night). The rooms are clean and the location is good, but it is not a particularly nice, charming or interesting hotel. The hotel is a bit barebones, but I would recommend it if you are on a budget, as it is comfortable and clean place.

Clean, cosy and good service

from Revvuer
I stayed in a standard room at the Ibis recently for a couple of nights while I was in wellington on business. The service from reception was outstanding - they really do believe in service with a smile! The room was comfortable (very nice bed), very clean and tidy - although quite small and "boring" - neutral decor. Not too noisy. Overall, good place to stay and average rates. I would definitely consider staying there in the future.

Brilliant Ibis hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Ibis hotel in Wellington in April and had a terrific time. We had stayed at Ibis hotels in England and on the continent and were surprised how much better this one was in Wellington - pretty much equal to a 4 star hotel. We had breakfast one morning which was very good value and a dinner in their restaurant on the last night which was great - try the Gnocchi!!

Room OK, Restaurant Awful

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is perfectly OK as a place to stay. The rooms were modern, clean & quiet, and the service was no frills but friendly and efficient. The attached restaurant however is another story entirely. Skip the overpriced breakfast and head along the road to Minnow or one of the many other excellent cafes. You can also get much better and cheaper meals at restaurants in the vicinity.
