Stayed here in Feb 06, great sized rooms, seperate spa bath in room, huge beds and great service from the staff. Rooms are great for families and location, although a little out of the main town, is still pretty central to all you want to do in Rotorua.

Not a nice hotel

from gracefrn
We hated this hotel from the moment we arrived.

Firstly it's way outside the town.

The reception staff were rude and indifferent until they found out we were Irish and then suddenly became full of smiles and welcomes because they had lived there for a while!

There was no offer of any help with our huge cases which my husband was trying manage on his own as I had hand luggage.

The room was HUGE with furniture that was totally lost in it, it was like sleeping in a big echoing hall. The bathroom was filthy, the "spa bath" was years old with rusty jets, and a gross shower curtain flapping around it, just vile, I wouldn't use it if it was the last bath on earth!

Foolishly we decided to try the "spa" area, again just vile, dirty water, dirty floors, old towels thrown everywhere. Gross.

We didn't bother complaining to management because we were only there for one night and were planning on leaving ASAP the next morning and never returning.

Because we had booked through an agent we had paid in advance and so when checking out they didn't as much as ask if we had enjoyed our stay, all we got was " that's paid".

The lobby was fine and maybe we were just very unlucky with our room but I will never stay in another Rydges hotel again.

Dear Gracefrn,

Thank you for taking the time to fill out the feedback section on this site. We do value both positive and negative feedback from Rydges Rotorua guests as we genuinely want to know what our guests think about our facilities and service.

Our goal is to provide a totally satisfying experience to each and every person who visits Rydges Rotorua. Unfortunately, in your case, we were not successful in accomplishing this goal.

I have spoken to our Front Office & Housekeeping Manager about the concerns you raised in your comments and steps are currently being taken to ensure that these problems are investigated and do not occur in the future.

I must admit we do not get many complaints about having the largest hotel rooms in Rotorua, nor do people mention they have a problem with being less than 1km from the Rotorua CBD. I understand your comments and will try to attend to them.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your observations

Kind regards,

Great Time at Rydges

from Kiwidreamer
We were looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights at short notice for my husband and me and our 2 teenagers. After narrowing down to several available options we opted for 2 rooms at Rydges, as they had a great deal on their website of $105 / room (only $1 less than wotif but we got to see more photos of what the place looked like.) We got 2 rooms next door to each other - no interconnecting door but this proved great as it gave us all some space but we could keep tabs on the teenagers as well. Rooms are very large and have a bit more character than the average hotel room. Some furniture starting to show its age but really comfortable beds.

The pool area is great and we had it to ourselves for over an hour. The dining area looked really enticing but the menu didn't do much for us so didn't eat there. Had drinks in the bar and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience there.

Handy to supermarkets and local shopping centre and not too far from the city centre (you could walk it). All in all we had a great stay and thought it was good value for money. We would stay here again.

Rydges Rotorua - Fantastic Value for Families!

from chynna
We stayed 1 night (June) in their Spa Deluxe unit. This room consisted of 2 x queen beds in a huge room, spa bath, and balcony (complete with table and 2 chairs - this would be lovely for sitting out on a warm summer's night, but it was too cold for us to do that on this occasion).

Also provided are 2 towelling bathrobes for your use whilst staying (a first at anywhere that I have stayed at!).

The kids loved the large indoor swimming pool, which also has a spa pool attached (although we thought this to be a little too hot and couldn't stay in it for longer than 10 minutes).

The Rydges deal at the moment is that kids stay and eat free, so we had our dinner in The Atrium restaurant. The kids meals are the best they have ever had in this kind of deal - even better than the adult's meals! Kids get a free drink (1 softdrink), a main meal and a dessert - my son's fresh fruit salad was HUGE!

The only negative aspects of our stay involved the restaurant:

1. We weren't advised when we booked in for dinner that if we didn't do the Asian buffet option (at $37.50 pp) then the "a la carte" menu would have a limited selection - which was a little disappointing when we had already chosen something out when we booked only to find that our choices weren't on the limited menu that night!

2. The buffet breakfast food is of a good standard (although nothing different from any other big hotel chain breakfast), however the food is only lukewarm which spoils the flavours. (It is very difficult to keep food hot when the lids are constantly being lifted, and sometimes left open.)

Apart from that it was a great family night away from home, and we will be back again sometime!

Dump Warning- Do Not Stay Here!!!!!

from Archgirl16
Below I have posted the comment I wrote on the Rydges survey. I think that it is only fair that I share what I told them.

'I was shocked at the poor quality of this hotel. It is unfortunate that it has the Rydges name attached, I think it is very misleading as it does not live up to the standard. The foyer/lobby suggests that the rest of the hotel would be better looking. Our room was disgusting. Telling staff would not have been able to fix it as the hotel needs renovating and a thorough clean (especially the bathroom). The kettle was terrible, it could not be used. Staff did not assist with opening or closing of doors upon arrival. What on earth the man at the door was hired to do is beyond us. We got no assistance with taking bags upstairs. If you claim to be a better hotel act like one. For the money I paid for the night I could stay in an excellent hotel both aesthetically and service wise. I would never, never stay here again or recommend it to someone else. It is a dump.

We wanted to leave, but every hotel and motel that we went past that night had no vacancy - lucky for you.

What are you going to do about this? We were ripped off.'

I travel regularly and was very unimpressed.

I have attached photos - like a previous reviewer. Unfortunately the photos do not show the whole extent of the uncleanliness, the sleeping area was also horrible.

Avoid Rotorua...

from SofieZurich
Rotorua stays in our memory as a stinking city. The hotel is very unattractive, lsitting like a big block on some of the man roads. The staff was not very welcoming, and we needed to change rooms after checkin (the non-smoking room turned out to be a smoking room :-(). Furthermore, the hotel was full will asian groups that were very noisy while leaving in the early morning.
Management Response from ScottRotorua
Dear Guest,

Thankyou for your comments regarding your recent stay.

Good Stay !!

from Movingmike
Stayed at the 'Rydges' for 2 nights on our tour of New Zealand found it to have comfortable rooms and pleasant and helpful staff.

The room we had was clean, very large with good facilities.

The front desk staff were helpful on all occasions that we questioned them.

The bar facility was well manned and even though we went there when there was a wedding reception taking place the service was still good.

Swimming pool facility good.

The hotel is on the extreme of the town and to walk to the lakeside area would take around about 30 minutes on the flat.

Comfortable

from PSAG
Stayed here for about four nights whilst touring NZ.
Allocated an older room at side of hotel on 3rd Floor - very spacious and comfortable and had at one stage been a room with a kitchenette as fitted with a domestic sink and storage units plus fridge. Decor was rather tired and colour scheme drab.
-
Hotel is in the touring market and at least two coaches arrived / departed each day.
-
Restaurant is in an Atrium area, comfortable but noise levels can get high. While we were there you had to book a table - even though restaurant was not running at capacity. These seemed to be governed by staff availability both front of house and in the kitchen. Food was excellent and reasonable menu. Service was very slow which detracted from pleasure of the meal. Hotel was also running a Kid's Eat Free promotion so it was better to eat later to avoid the spectacle of enormous amounts of food being wasted, children running around the restaurant etc.
-
Hotel is adjacent to the Rotorua racecourse - so there is a good walking area available when Course is not in use, only 5 -10 minute walk into town and also close to several large supermarkets. Local restaurants nearby and of good quality.
-
Hotel swimming pool and gymnasium very small and poorly maintained.
-
Hotel bar reasonable size - but staff service skills lacking - and would appear not to receive much in the way of support or training.
-
Did not notiice much evidence of managment presence in the hotel - almost all the staff we encountered were efficient and enthusiastic, apart from when we intially checked in. In fact the contrast in attitude and service when we later dealt with the front desk was most marked and more than compensated for the initial bad impression.
-
Althought the hotel encouraged feedback and promised a response - over a month later nothing has been heard and we doubt whether we will here anything.
-
A comfortable hotel- some of the areas need refurbishment, but the newer rooms had balconies and looked comfortable. Good location for getting out and about around Rotorua.

enjoyed our stay here

from cali-trekker
i'm really surprised with all the bad reviews this place has gotten. i honestly don't feel it's as bad as everyone says it is. i thought the service was very good. the front desk people greeted us with a smile when we checked in and out. our first morning there, we were not aware that the breakfast buffet was only for two guest (we had 3 people in our room), and they didn't hesitate to accomodate us. the rooms we had was spacious. going to rotorua, you expected to smell sulfur, so it didn't bother us. we were prepared. the hotel is definitely well heated, to say the least.
overall, i think we had a positive experience here, and i would definitely stay here again. location is very good too.

Move on, its awful!!

from caomh66
Stayed one night, bathroom was fillthy, never washed properly, no bath but a large dirty wet area shower, corroded pipework, dirty tiles, toilet was on a elevated level and was a feat of acrobatics to sit on it! Hotel smells of asian food thoughout, off putting, room was grungy, old beds, tired decor, awful epxerience, my advice is not to stay here, there are far better places to stay in Rotorua.
Management Response from ScottRotorua

Top Local Tips for Rotorua

pub grub The old poice station in Rotorua is now the Pig and Whistle gastropub. They do excellent meals at very economical prices. Service is good and the surroundings are interesting.

Buried Village The buried vilage was boring. There was really nothing to see. I was excited to go there and was let down. The archaeological remains are dismal. It ended up being a really expensive 1.5km walk. Go to a public park it would be better than coughing up the entry fee. The Rotarua Museum is a much better experience - I suggest that you spend the money on that entry fee or better still thermal sites.

Hobiton Go to Hobiton and see the shire and get your picture taken in Frodo's house!
