Struggling a bit to be a 5 star! Accommodation adequate and clean. Experience let down by off hand approach of chef in dealing with special needs.

Nice, clean, good value for the money

Stayed in Novotel in mid December with my family (2 kids 2 adults). Location is great, beautiful view of Lake Rotorua, many shops and restaurants right outside of the hotel. Short taxi ride to all of the major attractions (we went to Te Puia, Rainbow Springs and Sky gondola). Nice staff. Gym is bad, but there is always an alternative to take a brisk walk by the lake and enjoy the views while excersizing. No sulfur smell. Very clean and very nice impression overall.

Great Hotel

Great hotel with lovely views of the Lake. Very handy for the town of Rotorua and only a minute from the Lakeside. No smells from sulphur fumes either! The hotel has a great spa area, with 4 private hot pools from the spring water (very hot!), and a nice swimming pool.

Clean and Spacious

Upon arrival the greeting was extremely friendly - which is standard in most NZ hotels. Check in was very quick, and we were given an upgrade to a King Room.

Also had the option of smoking, or non smoking which we were grateful for as there is nothing worse than a non smoker going into a smoking room.

The room we had was on the Eastern Side, which meant that we had the morning sun, and a great view of Lake Rotorua. The room was clean and tidy and with a fully stocked mini-bar.

The only thing however, was that there were no towels. A phone call to reception soon had this sorted and towels were placed outside our front door with a knock within 10 minutes. The water pressure in the shower was excellent, however due to the sulfur content of the water in Rotorua it did smell for the first 5 minutes or so, but then disappeared. This is a regular feature of hotels in Rotorua however, so is not something unique to the Novotel. There is no swimming pool here, but there is one at it's sister hotel which is right next door. However, Guests at the Novotel, cannot swim at that one. There was ample car parking for hotel guests, along with a good size laundry.
The laundry was coin operated, and worked fairly quickly as all our clothes were washed and dried within an hour. The hotel is in a good position with the park across the road from it, and the main centre about a 5 minute walk away.

Overall, We would stay here again as we found it entirely suiting our needs.

Great hotel, location is icing on the cake

Great clean hotel right across from the lake and also near many restaurants and shops. The staff was always friendly which made our stay even better. We stayed in a lake side room which had indeed a very nice unobstructed view of the lake and park (by the lake). Being right by the lake made it a quiet place to stay also. The room was clean and had everything we needed for a nice 2 night stay. It is a low-frills hotel, but you can't beat the price for what the hotel has!

This was a lovely hotel, breakfast included and very nice too. Rooms were great, large and well fitted out. Internet in room with your laptop for 68c per minute or in the lobby for a similar price. Staff were great. Hotel very close to the lakeside although difficult to see it through the trees. Very close to the shopping centre. You can actually view your up to date bill on the television in your room. Swimming pool, spa, geo-thermal spa and private spa’s available at no extra cost. All used. Guest Laundry.

Nice hotel good location

If you are visiting Rotorua you wont go wrong staying here. Lovely hotel nice good size clean rooms not luxury but more than adiquate. I did not get a lake view but someone has to look over the car park and I was only there for one night. Great for the lake and the town its very convienient, food was lovely and the staff very welcoming and helpful

Nice Rooms

After checking out of another hotel because the rooms were like something from the fifties this hotel was pure luxury!!! You know what to expect with a Novotel and this one didn't let us down. Good value for money, modern clean rooms and helpful staff.

Confusing lay out!

Our room was spacious and had a good view over the lake.
The staff are helpful and friendly. Lots of information leaflets in lobby.

Set out of hotel is very confusing, it's in different blocks with car parks in different areas. It took us 2 days to work it all out!

Breakfast is good, food in bar was excellent.

We stayed at the Novotel for 2 nights from 23-25 January 2006. The hotel was fine but there was nothing special about it. The room was clean and had a view of the parking lot. It is very average in that nothing, not even the service, was above average or exceptional. The first night we stayed the stench of sulfur was heavy throughout our room and the hotel. It may have been due to the weather but the smell got in the ventilation system and it was awful. The mattress was also extra extra firm and made for an uncomfortable night's sleep. For the money I am sure that better accommodation exists in Rotorua

Top Local Tips for Rotorua

Shuttles When you arrive at the airport, there is a shuttle that will take you directly to your hotel. It costs a very small fee, so there is no need to book transfers ahead.

Polynesian Spa The Polynesian Spa was recently remodeled in 2007 and is quite pleasant and comfortable. For those wanting a private pool, you only really need a 30 minute slot. I also recommend you get not the most expensive pool - it usually looks at screaming birds mating and nesting on the lake! The slightly less expensive private pool with no view is actually more private and relaxing. I hear the spa treatments there are quite good. The public pools can be super crowded at times, so it pays to look around a bit before paying to enjoy the pools.

Skip Te Puia, go for Whakarewarewa village behind it Most visitors to Rotorua go to visit the geyser and thermal springs. Te Puia is situated directly on the land next to the geyster, and offers a VERY touristy visit. There are also several Maori cultural exhibits. However, an adult ticket will set you back over $100. We went to the Whakarewarewa village behind Te Puia and got the tour, information and view of the geyser (which was just as spectacular as Te Puia's) for about $50. The guide was quite knowlededgeble and we got to see the "living village."
