Historical Traveller Reviews of Rydges Lakeland Resort Queenstown Hotel

Awesome Queenstown

from TracyJD
After reading all the reviews I wondered why we were staying at this hotel but there was nothing to be worried about, the hotel was in a fantastic location with amazing views, it was cheap and the room that we stayed in looked over the lake, there was nothing wrong with it, not for the price you are paying. My sister in law was in one of the rooms at the back of the hotel which had no view but there was nothing wrong with the room. The bar area, pool and jacuzzi is all really nice and the breakfast and snacks that we had at the hotel were very nice. The people are very friendly and helpful and can organise any trip that you want. Don't let the other reviews put you off, there is so much to do that you will never be in your hotel room anyway!

Better than I feared, but room for improvement

from LilyXYZ
I attended a conference as guest speaker and was lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite as the conference organiser consider the allocated rooms to be "tired".. Although much of the hotel had apparently been redecorated, work was still in progress, and despite renovation the corridors were dingy and other people confirmed their rooms were shabby. The suite was fine with separate bedroom and living room and reasonable bathroom, though I hate flimsy shower curtains, and there was no shower gel or body lotion (unlike Rydges Christchurch) which seemed a petty meanness. The bedroom was cold, but a heater was quickly provided, though when I plugged the kettle in as well I blew all the fuses. Sliding doors gave access to a terrace shared with other suites, with wonderful view of the lake. Breakfast was dull and the hot food, for which an extra charge was made, was not up to much with soggy bacon and rather watery scrambled egg, and there was no ham or cheese in the continental selection. The conference lunch food was much better, though the coffee was awful. All told, better than I feared from the reviews, but the location was the best feature and the hotel had a rather institutional feel clearly catering mainly for conferences or package tours.

2 thumbs down!

from Schatze_Oz
My Partner and I stayed here for 4 days. We stayed in a Deluxe Room, the views were sensational. Rydges looks great from the outside. No one from the hotel showed us to our rooms and we had to take our own luggage up to the rooms. We had to wait 30 mins till we got the lift as a tour arrived just before we got there (they only have 2 small sized lifts). The rooms were not clean and there was an old sock left behind the heater which was not removed by the cleaners all the time we were there. It is probably still there. I wonder how often they move the furniture to clean?
Management Response from JustinBoydell
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for the opportunity to send through a Management response to the most recent feedback from the property. This gives me the chance to highlight some recent developments for the property.
I wanted to take the opportunity to point out some changes that have taken place in the hotel over the past 18 months in relation to refurbishment. We have embarked on a 24 month refurbishment program in which we are over halfway through, which will be completed in early/mid 2007.
The front block of the building containing 163 of the 255 rooms has been refurbished including bedding, tub chairs, curtains, fittings and fixtures. The corridors and public areas have all been modernised and repainted. The restaurant has been redeveloped and the bar completely rebuilt and is modern and contempory highlighting the wonderful views from the 6 floor outlook including a wonderful open deck and fireplace. The pool has been remodeled and new spa installed.
The next step in the refurbishment program will involve the back block in which 61 of the 92 remaining rooms, corridors and lifts will undergo the same redevelopment as the Front block. The existing 31 rooms in this block have only the bathrooms to go to complete their refurbishment. The hotel boasts agruably some of the best views available in Queenstown and is situated right on the lake with a flat 400 metre walk to town.
Thanks again for the opportunity to highlight some of the recent changes and future developments for the hotel. Please feel free to contact me in relation to this response.
Yours Sincerely,

Justin Boydell

I've stayed here twice and I would never stay at the Rydes again. The staff are tight with toliet paper. I also had an issue with the TV. I wasnt able to get the tourist station. When I asked the staff about this, the response i got is "We are getting renovations done and everything is just ---. Mind you this is comming from the staff. This was not a professional manner.

Both times that I stayed at the Rydes the windows looked like that hadnt been cleaned for years and covered in bird poo.

I would not recommed this Hotel to anyone.

Deluxe room fine, standard room poor

from Bugs1012
We initially moved into a standard room which was pretty poor - fungus on the bathroom ceiling, small room, bad tv reception, a long way from the core of the hotel (in an annexe). But a truck parked outside our window obscuring the lake view and we were upgraded to a deluxe room which was much much better. Clean, modern, good tv reception etc

it worked out for us, but wouldnt rush back

Unusual

I am somewhat surprised by the negative reviews. My wife and I stayed at the hotel for several days in May of 2004 and they were clean and acceptable and the view was terrific.

Awful Experience

from Ged
I stayed in this hotel with my husband for 2 nights in Nov 2005. The room smelt heavily of smoke and was not very clean. It was the type of room that made you afraid of getting into the bed. There were 2 beds in the room, a single and a double. I could not get into the double bed with my husband as the dirty looking mattress was barely covered by an inadequate sized sheet. Any movement in the night would have exposed the mattress. I complained to the reception about the condition of the room, but was told I could not be moved as the hotel was fully booked. They offered to fumigate the room whilst we were having our evening meal to get rid of the smell of smoke. When we returned the smell of smoke had been replaced by an overwhelming smell of some bleach type fluid. We could not leave the window open as our balcony was just a hop away from the corridor balcony window, which was open at all times. Although not asthmatic I woke up in the night gasping for breath. The bathroom floor was grimy behind the utensils, with greasy dirt hanging to the rusty pipework. Showering in this room was not an inviting prospect. Breakfast, although better than the room was below par. This hotel is definitely not an experience I would wish to repeat and in my opinion is the poorest hotel we stayed at in New Zealand, despite the promising hotel frontage.

Disappointing

Staying at any Rydges can be hit and miss....this one was the latter. We had booked for 4 nights at the Rydges for a 'great New Year experience' but managed to stay only one night. Aside from a fantastic View of the Lake, our room was extremely dated and the bathroom looked better suited to a caravan park, than an international chain hotel. We were stuck with a double bed with a large sag in the middle and a very small single dressed in sheets and blankets perhaps from when the hotel first opened.
New Years' Eve dinner at the QT Rydges was an experience in itself, our 'table with a view' came complimented by several dead flies....when asked to move, we were placed at a table with only slightly less dead friends, neither table was cleaned, and our previous table was re-seated with other unsuspecting New Years Revellers. In addressing our issues with QT Rydges, it must be said this however was not the case at several other Rydges stayed at during our holiday, which were very comfortable and enjoyable. So our advice is do your research and read reviews, something we regretted to do. You may just find a great Rydges experience!!!!

Substandard !!!

from Chiropractor to the Rich and Well-Travelled
The Location: Lakefront. Easy to find.

The Room: Located on Level 8. Overlooking lake. Our room was unfortunately consistant with many of the negative elements described by previous reviewers. Can't be bothered to repeat the same. Just read the previous reviews.

Cost: $135 + GST, including breakfast.

Staff: Check-in staff efficient and pleasant.

Parking: Open rooftop.

Food/Room Service: Hot and cold buffet breakfast in large dining room. The food was standard and unremarkable. The view was nice. (For dinner try to eat at The Bunker - great food, friendly service)

Overall Impression: Apparently this hotel is undergoing renovation and has better rooms than the one in which we stayed.

As we were doing a tour of South Island we were not concerned with staying in the lap of luxury... but we did on occasion try. Unfortunately the 4/5 star properties in Queenstown were booked out (we chose not to pre-book our accommodation).

I don't want to get stuck in the negativity, but this was a very poor choice for a hotel and a disappointment compared to other Rydges we have stayed in previously. Consequently we will never consider Rydges again... partly because of this unfortunate experience and partly because we can afford better.

Do yourself a favour, read the other reviews for this 'hotel' and, on this occasion, believe them and stay someplace else!

Baaaad experience

from firepois
My husband and I spent 3 weeks traveling up and down all of New Zealand and finally ended up in Queenstown for the last part of our stay. We stayed at the Rydges for one night and what a mistake that was. We checked out this place on Trip advisor and the reviews did not seem too bad at that time, either that or I was out of my mind. We reserved a room with the hotel directly and they gave us a super saver price for a room that looked like it had a gorgous view, so we reserved it.
What a disappointment this was. We had to walk what seemed to be a quarter of a mile to get to our room. All the exterior hallways and walls leading to our room were rundown and smelly. The room itself was old, dingy and had a very bad odor. The carpeting was so run down I could see the floor boards underneath in parts of the room. The bed was half made and did not even have a bedspread. Yes, the view was spectacular, but I could not overlook all the many negative things as I mentioned and the many I have not mentioned. We asked for a room switch and they gave us a hard time at first, but then later moved us three floors up in the same building, from the 6th floor to the 9th floor. Still, it was an awful room.
Had I known that they had done some rennovations in other parts of the hotel, I would have requested a change and just paid the upgrade. We stayed the one night and left for Brown's Boutique for the rest of our stay, another 4 nights, which by the way is a wonderful place to stay. We would go back there again in a second.
Apparently, Rydges super saver price on their web site is how they lure potential suckers into filling in the rooms in their unrennovated portions of the hotel. So, this is a true example of "you get what you paid for-($135 NZ).

Top Local Tips for Queenstown

Dux De Lux Dont bother with this place. Beer was OK but food was dull, overpriced and pretentious

Stay close to the village There are tons of hotels/motels in this town and the best deals are off the main street. Book close to the village as parking is hard to find and expensive in the village.

Queenstown Great place to visit and can get some great deals when you get there rather than booking first.
