I LOVE THIS HOTEL - THE VIEWS ARE AMAZING
from hopeislandBefore going I had read a few comments about don't pay extra for Lake-views......I have no idea why? They are to die for and given the NZ exchange rate why wouldn't you treat yourself.
The hotel once again excelled at everything and I can honestly say after staying twice I would not stay anywhere else.
Well done Crowne Plaza Queenstown!!!!!!!!
PS make sure you dine in threesixty not your average restaurant food.

from ticketibooGood Hotel and Location but there are Issues that need Fixing
from jen_robThe room was clean, well furnished with flat screen TV and had a good comfortable king bed with choice of pillow types. Whilst the hotel has been recently refurbished, it has not been possible to disguise the bathrooms that are still the 30 something years old Travelodge standard bathrooms. The grate was missing from the bathroom basin and despite our asking that something be done to fix it on at least 3 occasions, nothing was done. On the third occasion we mentioned it to reception staff after part of a make-up item had accidentally dropped in the basin and disappeared down the drain, we were told that the hotel's maintenance crew were extremely busy. On our third morning we had a relatively short time between waking up, packing bags, having breakfast and checking out and were rather put off when we found that the toilet was not flushing properly and was unusable probably due to a partial blockage in the pipe work below. With no time to call maintenance and wait while they fixed the plumbing, we had no option other than to dress and use the public loos. The hotel's response re the basin grate or presenting guests with a blocked toilet first thing in the morning is not acceptable for a hotel that aspires to maintain a 5 star rating and corresponding room rates.
The balcony overlooking the lake and the "TSS Earnslaw" wharf had a couple of chairs and a table and was a pleasant place to enjoy a post lunch or afternoon glass of wine whilst watching the comings and goings of boats on the lake, the people around the lake foreshores and the rainbows as the rain and snow showers passed across the lake and over The Remarkables.
The Crowne Plaza is very well located, there is a Casino, several restaurants, the "TSS Earnslaw", jet boats, fishing charters and the Real Journeys office / bus terminal directly across the road and the shops, restaurants, Queenstown gardens and other tourist attractions are within a few minutes easy walk. One can spend as long as one likes wandering around the city without worrying about finding a car park or transport schedules to/from accommodation that is further out of town.
We had concerns from previous TA reports that noise may be a problem with the hotel fronting the lake front road and the buses coming and going to the "TSS Earnslaw" and Real Journeys but we were pleasantly surprised that we were not troubled by noise at all.
The buffet breakfast was generally reasonable although on one morning there was only scrambled eggs available for those wanting eggs and the bacon was so crisp and tough that one had the feeling that it was being recycled from previous meal leftovers. The hotel kitchen obviously had a few problems with its dish washing hygiene as on two mornings we found several dirty plates with food residue on them in the stack of fresh plates as well as at least six dirty juice glasses ready for guest use on the buffet. We also had to return a few dirty coffee cups that had been set fresh on the table. Service was OK. We did not use the restaurant or bars for dinner or evening drinks.
The room rate of NZ$261 for the lake view room inclusive of two buffet breakfasts is probably acceptable if all of the noted hotel deficiencies are corrected.
To summarise:
Good points: Reception and concierge service, well furnished comfortable room, good bed, lake view balcony, free car parking, great location within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Not Satisfactory: Bathroom, bathroom plumbing, lack of maintenance response, some buffet food, kitchen dishwashing and hygiene quality control. These unsatisfactory points will quickly drag down this otherwise good hotel if the management / building owners fail to correct these problems as a matter of urgency.
View not worth extra money
from Peggysue45Basically a business hotel
from catullaSure, the staff were friendly and the rooms were well appointed. It is also well located, being a short walk from the centre of town. But it seemed to be aiming for business travellers, not leisure travellers like us. The breakfast buffet was stale, as if the fruit had been cut up the night before. The rooms were not well cleaned and we were most disappointed that the "lake view" that we paid extra for was not a view of the lake. You could see some of the lake from the balcony, but the view from the room was of the house across the street. It was definitely not worth the higher rate.
The foyer and bar area are well designed in a modern edgy style, but the forecourt looked like a car rental yard, so initially I missed it and drove straight past!
Great hotel
from DloboNice, affordable, and convenient Crowne Plaza
from bikinigirlThe breakfast buffet is hearty. Once again, no surprises, and the service was excellent. The bar is okay if you are with a group. This is not a "hot" scene, but it is a nice place to start or catch a nitecap.
The reception staff were excellent! They are well-connected to everyone in town and can/will make arrangements for any activities in which you're interested--let them do this for you.
I would recommend this hotel. Like I said, it's not fancy, but it is a good hotel overall.

from FoxTravelerAs for Queenstown, take advantage of all there is. We had a rental car (free parking at the hotel), so we were able to drive to many of the outlying areas. Highly recommend bungy jumping—we did the Kawarau River Bridge, and it was a blast! Jet-boating on the Shotover River is a must-do. We’d recommend the Shotover rather than the Kawarau for jet-boating, as the Shotover goes through a canyon and is much more exciting! If you do an activity and like it so much to do it again, many offer 50% off discounts if you book a second one right away. We also took a day and drove to Milford Sound for the cruise with Real Journeys. We opted to drive ourselves since we had a car and could control our own schedule. Everyone told us it would take 5 hours to get there, but we made it in 3½ …easy to do if you make quick stops for pictures. Apparently the buses stop for 10 minutes at a time for photo opportunities as well as morning and afternoon tea. The scenery on the drive is something not to be missed, as you travel through farmland full of sheetp, multiple lakes, grasslands in foothills, then dense forests, then bare rock majestic snow-capped mountains! We also did short trips to Glenorchy, Arthurs Point, and Arrowtown to see some of the outlying areas. And don’t miss the Gondola and luge….it’s an inexpensive and fun way to spend an afternoon!
Top Local Tips for Queenstown
Gondola and Milford Sound Trip Go up on the gondola where you will get fantastic views. If you go on the Milford Sound Tour and take the Scenic flight return option, beware if the weather not too good. We had to return by coach because the weather was too cloudy to fly back. We were not told this before we set off and so had no option but to return to Queenstown by coach which meant a round trip in the coach of 11 hours. Had we known before setting out we would have liked the option to cancel the entire trip.
Get out and about Take a day to hire a car and go for a drive out to Arrowtown and all the way round to Wanaka and do the full circle. Some beautiful scenery and a good change.
