good location, ok rooms

We stayed at the Stamford plaza in October 2006. The lobby has just been refurbished & it's very contemporary, but the rooms are just ok. I'd say above average but not a 4 star hotel. IT is in a good location in Auckland though... 2 blocks from Queen street and the water front.

Rooms Badly Need Refurbishment

Attn Fellow people on Business trip in Auckland: The rooms of this hotel BADLY need refurbishment, the desks an chairs in the rooms must be over 20 years old and are very unconfortable as well as the other furnitures. The size of the rooms are smaller than in Japan. The business center is inconsistent, they dont even have a scaner. Only positive point is the location right in the city center. Some major money need to be put by the Stamford chain in this property, otherwise service is fine and kind.

From the time of our arrival to our departure, the receptionists, doormen, baggage handlers, concierge and housekeeping staff were very hospitable, respectful, professional and accommodating. The one bedroom on the eighth floor was quiet, very clean, elegant, and spacious with many amenities. The contemporary bathroom was well equipped with a shower and a bathtub. There was even a telephone in the toilet room. We rarely waited more than a minute or two for using the hotel elevators. Free local newpapers were available at the concierge's desk. There were five gathering places for eating, drinking or smoking fine cigars. The Brasserie restaurant had an ambience of a fine cafe that overlook the main street. The food and service was very good. The hotel is also ideally located in the heart of downtown Auckland. We felt comfortable, well received in a first class hotel that we certainly want to enjoy again. The Wongs of Honolulu

The Stamford Plaza was our first stop in our Honeymoon.
We booked our accommodation over the internet and always received top quality replies and were well looked after.
When we arrived the staff we all friendly and welcoming, especially after they found out that we had travelled all the way from England!!!
The breakfasts were fantastic and plentiful and filled us up for most of the day! Therefore saving a bit of money!
The view from our room was great.
To top it all off the hotel had an open air swimming pool on the top floor and all the facilities, including the gym and changing area were spot on.
We would definitley go back somwtime in the future.
Happy days.

Terrible service at the Stamford

On the first night of our honeymoon, we had a one night stopover in Auckland. Booking on an internet website, I was attracted to the claims of 'Auckland's best hotel'. What a joke!

Arriving late in the evening, we presented our confirmation printout to reception, only to be told that the hotel had no record of our booking, and could we wait a moment. 10 minutes later, we were told to take a seat, and the hotel staff would prepare a double room. 20 minutes later when I approached the desk to see what was going on, I heard the cleaner say to the receptionist that I would have to wait another 30 minutes, because the cleaners were on their break! 5-star service???

After almost an hour, we were given our keys, but not an apology. We were treated like we were pests, and felt very unwelcome.

The room itself was standard, although room service was not available and the air conditioning control didn't work. Not a great start to a luxury honeymoon.

I wrote a complaint and then a follow up email to the Stamford, and have not received any reply whatsoever. I would never recommend anyone stay here.

Poor unwelcoming service at the Stamford

We booked a good rate on the Stamford website for around 140 dollars, including breakfast for two and valet parking. When we arrived, the receptionist said that we would only get the room for that rate - no breakfast and 25 NZD for parking. Luckily, I had the printout of my booking (make sure you take yours) with a confirmation number. The receptionist was still reluctant to give me that rate (she said that she did not recognise the confirmation number) and I had to insist that she called central office. After about fifteen minutes, she confirmed our booking as per the website. Not a great start to our visit and, as we discovered, that was the start of our problems. We booked a double bed, but found that there were two singles in the room. It took a team some more time to rearrange the bedding by pushing the singles together. One of the lights did not work, and another call was needed to get it fixed. Then we were short one dressing gown and were told that there were not enough to go around. None of this is particularly disasterous, but this is a five star hotel! By the way, the rooms are adequate but not huge, the gym and rooftop pool tiny, the buffet breakfast was crowded, but okay, and the location very good for downtown. We had a good rate but would not stay there again.

We stayed at two hotels (Stamford Plaza and the Hyatt) during our stay in Auckland. The Hyatt is by the far superior choice.

The lobby of the Stamford was fairly impressive, but beyond that the hotel was a dissapointment. Our room was on the eighth floor with a view facing a back alley. The general feel of the room was spacious, but sparse. The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets and bedding felt shabby. the king was two beds pushed together. The television was small and was placed in a position where you could not watch comfortably from bed.

My husband ordered a movie and the movie shut down for no reason halfway through. Although they did refund us the cost of the film, they did not return our call as to whether or not they would be able to reset the movie for 30 minutes.

The hairdryer did not work (smelled like burning hair when turned on) and there was no stationery in the room.

Overall, I would say the Hyatt is better value for your money.

Quite Acceptable

We found Stamford Plaza to be a modern, well maintained hotel well located in downtown Auckland. Our room was spacious but had no view, unless looking out onto rooftops is considered desirable.

Hotel breakfast prices were ridiculous, so we walked perhaps two blocks and found a number of restaurants serving food at considerably lower costs. The desk personnel were spotty - some were very accomodating while others couldn't be bothered.

The rooftop pool and changing rooms were terrific, giving us a place to change into our travel clothes before leaving mid-afternoon.

Fabulous luxury and glamorous roof top pool

Fabulous 5 star hotel. Great central location. (Watch out for the Auckland hotels claiming to be central but are actually a hike up a steep hill off to the side of the City).

The very best thing about this hotel is the FABULOUS roof top swimming pool. If you are there in summer, it is key to have somewhere nice to sit and swim.

Food and service also very good. Great big nice breakfast.

For around the same price as the Hyatt, this is much much better in every way.

An acceptable but faded Stamford... not their best

We're regular visitors to Stamford properties around the Australia/NZ region and believe that they're generally reasonable accommodation for the price. This one is not one of their best, but doesn't completely disappoint.

I'd discount the reports on this site which rubbish the hotel. It really isn't that bad. But it also doesn't come up to the standards we'd expect of a 5 star hotel either. The lobby is reasonable, but the main restaurant is quite plain with a just-okay breakfast buffet and a relatively poor dinner offering. Thankfully a large number of excellent restaurants are clustered around the docks only a couple of minutes walk away.

The rooms are disappointingly small and somewhat faded. Again, better than most 4* hotels but not all. It isn't a motel as someone has posted on this site.

The location isn't bad, quite close to the docks, but the street it fronts is quite run-down. The pool and gym at the top is hopeless. It needs a major revamp and if you're going to have an outside pool then it should be run at a reasonable temperature. Our kids swim in almost every pool they see, but refused this one.

My take on it was that it was decent accommodation if you book through the discount web sites at rates like NZ$200 per night, but you really would feel somewhat robbed if you paid much more.

Top Local Tips for Auckland

easy way to get to town from airport I highly recommend Supershuttle to get from the Auckland airport to a central hotel. It was quick and reasonable. I booked it in advance and it was waiting just outside. It is a reasonable alternative to a cab.

Things to do In Auckland The bridge climb is a must i am afraid of heights and i absolutely loved it. There is a great view looking over the harbour and skytower etc, but it is a great sense of achievement when you reach the top. The tour guide gave us lots of infomation on the building and workings of the bridge.

Link buses Use the green Link buses to get around Auckland. They're great for shopping and eating at great places.
