Historical Traveller Reviews of Rydges Auckland Hotel

Loved Rydges

from iventure
Staff welcoming. Rooms clean and modern. Quiet though in the middle of Auckland. Price cheap compared to similar hotels. Absolutely fantastic!!

Great place, what is there to complain?

from johnklin
So I read the reviews, and some of them were mixed on Rydges Auckland. But I have to say, this place is great. Maybe you get a lot more for the U.S.$ in Auckland, but for the money, Rydges was a deal. Not only does the local downtown <-> public airport bus ("Airbus") drop you off in front of Rydges (it's one of the official stops), one is literally a five minute walk from Sky City, and Queen Street - the main road in Auckland, and maybe 10 minutes to the ferry building. Down the street is a City Convenience store where I walked

My room was nice and large with a flat panel TV. The bed was large and comfy. The service was helpful. Maybe other reviewers went before April 2007 or so, and the rooms were dumpy, but according to the hotel itself, it has been doing renovations since April or so.

location, crap food, mediocre service.

from chasor
Average hotel, but Ok for the price, nice clean tidy room. Staff seemed a bit offhand and not over helpful. Handy location in CBD not far from the viaduct etc. Breakfast was disgusting, poorly and over cooked, just thrown on plate, burnt toast, very second rate, staff couldn't care less when told how poor it was.
Overall OK but I wouldn't risk the restaurant. Breakfast at Subway was better, and that's not flash.

Dear Chaser,

Thank you very much for your constructive feedback, so we can make Rydges Auckland a better place to stay and dine. Your description about our breakfast is definitely not the norm. We will look into this particular issue and make the adjustments necessary.

Great Location, Value for Money

Quite simply, a good Hotel in a convenient location. Friendly and helpful staff made the experience better still. Improvement can be made with buffet service and variety on offer, otherwise good.

Loved Rydges

Stayed at the Rydges on a business trip and, while the room was a bit small, it was tastefully decorated, the view was lovely and the hotel staff was extremely helpful to someone new to Auckland and only in town for a few days. Cute bar and the bartender was cool and the dinner at the restuarant was scrumptious. I will definitely return!

A good base for exploring

from jaaames8
Although it took us a while to find, the hotel itself was very nice...the hotel was very accomadating for us, as there were 3 of us sharing one room they had moved an extra bed into our room so we had 2 doubles and a single, then quickly removed the extra bed when we said it wasnt needed....the room itself was a nice size, unfortunately we had a view of the neighbouring building.

The hotel was in a nice location for getting out and about, a few minutes from shops, restuarants and sky city, with bars and clubs just a lttle further away but still walking distance....overall the hotel served our 2 night visit well and i would not have had any complaints had we been staying longer

good central location

October 2006

We arrived early morning and travel weary, but were still able to get a room, for which we were very thankful. Our room was pleasant, clean and very comfortable. So much so that we thought we might have a quick shower and a doze, and didn't wake up till ten hours later!

We found the staff very efficent and helpful. The only meal we had here was breakfast, and there was everything that you might wish for.

We would book in here again, because of the central location, and the fact that there was not a lot of traffic noise, even though we were very central

Great Location, Large Room, Great Staff

If you want to be centrally located in Auckland, this is the spot. Only one block from the Sky Tower, you can walk anywhere in the CBD.

Front Desk team member Lauren was absolutely awsome. From sorting out my luggage that the airline lost to pointing out things to do and see.

The rooms (1213) were spacious, well kept and had all the features you'd expect.

I had only two gripes from my visit (a) the advertised Happy Hour had middys of some terrible tap brew for $4.00 - not good value and (b) $10.00 for an hour of internet access or $30.00 per day which is tant amount to highway robbery.

Dreary, average hotel

from anilvk
I stayed here for 5 nights at the end of September 2006. Staff at check in were disinterested at best. I got a room with dirty carpets and stains on the walls. Staff at the concierge desk had trouble informing me of major attractions in Auckland, mostly due to ignorance of these places. There was some confusion at the restaurant as to whether breakfast was included in my room rate or not. I was told it was one morning but when I went the next morning was told it was not! My advice is avoid this place - I'm sure there are better, more organised hotels in Auckland staffed by people who treat paying customers with respect.

Ok Hotel

from janalibor
have now stayed here twice, It is a clean no frills hotel offering no frills not greatly exciting food in a convienient location. Staff are mostly helpful appart from the check in staff on my first visit who seemed to struggle, and was happy to watch me struggle with my luggage. The 10 am check out is a little inconvienient to say the least but you can get a later time if you ask and they are not too pushed.

Top Local Tips for Auckland

Visit the Sky Tower Have dinner in the Orbit restaurant. If you dine in the Sky Tower you do not have to pay admission and the views are amazing. Dine evening so that you can see the lights come on around Auckland.

Tourist tram The tourist tram/bus takes you to all of the major places with taped commentary. Auckland is a big city and you can get to the museums, etc. easily on this on-and-off tram.
