The check in & check out was very slow, the room wasnt as confirmed when we finally got there. Breakfast was a shambles, they basically ran out of food. The decor was devine & the meal at Partingtons was wonderful but very expensive & we must of been the poorest in there.
But the general hotel service was lacking and wold suggest managment review staffing levels & training if they are to entice guests back to this wonderfully restored hotel.

Good average 5 star. Helpful staff. Good food. Walking distance of attractions (but it's uphill coming back!).

Historical Traveller Reviews of Langham Hotel Auckland

Sub Par Hotel Experience

from Livie
We stayed for 2 nights at the Langham during our visit to New Zealand in December 2006 as the jump off point to the vacation. We were very disappointed with the quality of service at the Langham. From the moment we arrived, the front desk was disorganized and unprofessional. Our rooms were not ready until 12 noon, and we had just traveled about 20 hours from Canada and arrived at around 8 am. The hotel was fully booked and the staff was stretched. When we did get our rooms, our luggage did not arrive and the staff was at a loss to find it. The person at the front desk even sounded expasperated with her own staff and seemed to blame everyone else.

The rooms were average in decor - at least everything seemed new and quite clean. The pool was quite small so I did not swim in it.

The front desk messaging system is also not up to par. A message was left for us by our traveling companions at front desk and we only received 3 hours later! The irony was I received that message directly in person when our companions returned before I got the message from the front desk.

I would say the location is also inferior - it is near one side of K Rd that was quite gritty and it seemed a bit far from the action.

We returned to Auckland during the last leg of our journey but we stayed at the Hyatt Regency instead, which was one of my most pleasurable hotel stay ever.

out of wind!

After a long flight from Austin, TX we arrived at the Langham in Auckland. Delighted that at 6:00 AM our room was ready (booked through AMEX platinum travel) we settled in. Less than 45 minutes later the sawing and pounding began! The Langham is renovating. We called the front desk. The lines were all busy. We weren't the only sleep hungry guests! When we finally did reach the desk they said there was a paper in our room explaining everything (the necessary construction) and that work should run from 10AM to 4 PM. They stopped that morning...but for the next 3 mornings they were back at it at 6:50 AM. They said there was no room they could move us to, that there was noise in the hotel everywhere! I think we were paying $400 a night and there is something I think they could have done. I think they could have contacted our AMEX agent and made arrangements for us to stay elsewhere!!! That said, in our sleep deprived state we were completely UNDERWHELMED with Auckland. No shops, no energy, and very few nice restaurants. Clue: they list a discount shopping mall as a point of interest! Nancy Ring Austin, TX

t think so!

We recently stayed at the Langham Hotel and booked into an Executive Suite with adjoining room. To start with, it was very difficult to book. They advertise on their website two bedroom suites, but the reservations staff couldn't seem to work out what this actually meant and it took a lot of effort to get what we wanted.

We arrived slightly before check-in and were directed to the Club Lounge, with no offer to hold our luggage and take it to the room when we were ready. We were advised to come back to reception at check-in time and the room would be ready, however the room was still not ready at 3pm. Thirty minutes later someone came to get us and advised there was a problem with the lock on the door. This was not rectified until 9pm that night so we had to go in and out of the room through the bedroom.

The promised help for unpacking, pressing clothes and shoe shine did not materialise. We went instead to use the pool facilities which are in need of an upgrade. They have done a lot of work on the rooms but have let themselves down seriously in the bathrooms which are pokey, shower over bath and would be what you would expect in a three star hotel, not a five star hotel. The service was very disappointing. When we went to check out there was a phone call on the bill that had been made before we had even been able to get into the room.

Dinner at Partington's was the closest thing to a highlight, the decor here has been refubrished superbly. The service started well but deteriorated significantly as the restaurant got busier to the point where we had to pour our own wine. The food was average for the prices being charged but the wine list was extensive, and the wine we chose was superb.

Overall, a very disappointing experience and one that would not repeat.

Great hotel ... but

We stayed at the Langham for two nights in May. We got a good internet rate for the first night and were so impressed that we decided to take advantage of a weekend relaxation package offered, after detouring up Northland for two nights. We arrived back on a Saturday and checked in. Everything went well, we enjoyed another excellent meal at the SKyTower revolving restaurant, and our thanks to the Langham concierge for arranging those reservations on short notice. We also really enjoyed the champagne offered as part of the package, and our evening swim under the stars. However... at 9:00, two levels below us, a "party" started. This party included a live band, so it sounded more like a rock concert. We contacted the front desk and they said it would end around midnight. It did, and while there were times that the noise level lessened, the live band finished their last set at midnight. This should have been made known to us at check-in, as part of our reasons for taking advantage of the special offer was to "ensure" that we got a good last night's sleep before our 2 days flying back to Eastern Canada. Needless to say, that didn't happen. We did resolve the issue by working out a deal for a free lunch buffet the next day - but it doesn't absolve the Langham, in our view, particularly where it is a member of the "Leading Hotels of the World". The potential noise levels associated with this party should have been made known to all guests staying on the lower levels of the hotel, and the option provided to move to an upper level, at check in.

Otherwise, the Langham is an excellent hotel, the rooms are clean, luxurious, amenities are excellent. Compared to North America, the food prices are exorbitant, and we have already provided comments to the hotel directly to the effect that most N.A. hotels of note offer free in-room Internet access.

perfectly pleasant

from quin-i-bog
We stayed here on a short trip - just dropping in on relatives in Auckland for a couple of days before heading home. We had a "Park Suite" room, which was a genuine suite with separate sitting room. The hotel is very nice- reception staff were pleasant and helpful and the concierge was very good (especially with road directions!). We had a hire car so getting around was no problem (and the valet parking was great), but if you are without your own transport you'll find yourself taking a lot of taxis or doing a great deal of walking to get down to places like Viaduct Harbour.
Can't rate the food in the main restaurant as we didn't bother with eating in, but the complimentary continental breakfast in the "Club lounge" was perfectly nice.
The rooms were a good size, both the sitting room and the bedroom had giant flat screen TVs (perfect for watching all that football!) and the hotel provided all the services you'd expect like turn down etc. The bed was very large and very comfortable with a 6 pillows and a pillow menu for more!
I'd stay here again, but beware the rather long distance to tourist attractions if you don't have transport.

renovations ruined our stay

from xcell
After a week of camping up north we thought we would treat ourselves to a nice bed and a sleep in on our journey back home. Well the room was nice and the bed was huge (two doubles put together). However the sleep in didn’t happen after what sounded like a drill coming through the roof almost caused me to fall out of the bed. We did complain when we checked out and got a “sorry” guess there’s not much they could do as the damage was already done.

Location is ok, close to town but the hill can be a bit of a climb. Bathroom was nice and clean, internet was far to expensive.

I would recommend this hotel for business customers only.

Luxurious, but a bit far from the action

from John6
We stayed on the Club floors for 2 nights. The whole hotel is very luxurious and the restaurant is excellent. The only downside is the hotel's location, at the slghtly run-down top end of Queen Street, some 30 minutes walk from the waterfront. And it's uphill on the way back, especially the last few yards! The hotel does run a half-hourly courtesy bus, but as we found to our cost the vehicle's 11 seats are not sufficient to meet the demand at times.

Excellent Hotel with an amazing new look

from Expert_Traveller
Great hotel, service and surroundings - fantastic. I would recommend hotel restaurant Partingtons again and again.

This hotel has recently completed a refurbishment, it looks and feels luxurious.

Note previous guest comment, there was no sign at all of on going refurbishment work at the hotel and on speaking with the staff they advised that all work has been completed.

This hotel is truly the very best that Auckland has to offer.

Beware renovations

from MrArthur
Reasonable rooms, however beware of renovations in the hotel. I've stayed a few times, once in a room two floors below a room which was being renovated. The room was too noisy from 5:30am each morning, although staff were happy to move me to another room. Ideally the rooms surrounding the renovations shouldn't have been used.

The Internet access is fairly highly priced, and from mid-evening onwards pretty slow (forget using voice over IP reliably). For NZ$99 a week, better quality Internet is expected.

Overall a good hotel, and a short walk to most downtown areas.

Very happy

from Butchhall
Opted for club level and found a great price on their website for under $200US. Great service and very "upscale". Concierge was excellent. They arranged for transfers from the airport and transfers to the cruise port the next day. They also had a rental car waiting for us at the hotel, all arranged by our request by email. Room was excellent and free internet in the club lounge. Previous comment regarding the buffet is correct, however, it was more food than we could handle, so we took their recommendation of the small Italian spot just behind the hotel. It was great, but so much for thinking we would be getting a "lite" meal at an Italian restaurant. If you can get their club level rooms for $200US....don't even bother to look anywhere else....just take it.

Top Local Tips for Auckland

Excellect food good location Try "Soul" in the harbour area for superb food with flair. Expensive but truly aptly named.

Lacking In Choice We found it difficult to find places to dine in Auckland. There isn't much choice downtown, you have to go to neighborhoods like Ponsonby, Parnell, or Newmarket and even then we didn't find much that interested us. Places are either divey, touristy or full, so keep your eyes peeled for places you like the look of.

Go to Waiheke Island As above, a day trip to the island was lovely
