Reminded me of service in the 1980s in NZ: Terrible. Everything from checkin to the bar and room service was a nightmare. The staff have no idea what customer service is (obviously poor management in the extreme). Our stay was ruined by a shabby establishment in a great location with huge potential. Don't spend your hard earned money here if you expect to relax and enjoy a cheerful atmosphere.

Taxi to airport Try Discount Taxis in the yellow pages if you need a cab to the airport...$30 is the going rate, much lass than that quoted by hotels

You can't go wrong with the Heritage In a moderate price range you cannot go wrong staying at the Heritage Hotel, Auckland. It's centrally located with fabulous views from most rooms, and definitely from the fabulous pool/spa area (and it's a great sized pool). Even if you happen to get unlucky with NZ service (we are not famous for understanding the finer points of customer service) you will not regret staying in this aesthetically appealing location (furnishings show real thought and taste). The Muddy Farmer Irish style pub located below the hotel is a great place to snuggle up with a pint of beer or have a laugh with friends. Also good for quick meals with kids and a fantastic place to shelter if you get any Auckland rain.

Travel from airport - hire a car and not a taxi Taxi from airport is not worth it, rent a car instead! If in Auckland for a couple of days it is about the same price to rent a car from a teir 1 hirer (so even cheaper if low end off-airport site rental) and all that convenience, as it is to take a taxi (about NZ$65-75 each way). A car will cost about NZ$150 for two days vs. a NZ$140 taxi into city and back! As Auckland is a city that is not easy to get round for a pedestrian/public transport user a car or taxi is the only way. Shame but that is how it presently is... So you get the car from city to airport, and then have free use of it around the rest of the city!!!
