Would I stay at this location again: absolutely!
When the family hotel where my friends and I have stayed every year since 1990 changed hands, we were lost. But settling into the well located* Mananslu with its lovely garden, sparkling pool, views from most rooms, big suites, attractive dinning room, big lobby for meeting and greeting, and friendly staff proved to be a find for our group of seven. The staff warmed up to the two Nepali kids we love, sponsor, and share our hotel life; learned what individuals liked for breakfast; let us use the dinning room for endless gatherings; took good telephone messages; stored our bags; helped us get taxis; wrapped and stored packages; and never minded our endless requests and questions. We'll stay there again this spring (06). Hotel Manaslu is the “real” Nepal with enough amenities to suit a Californian!
* The location off Lazimpot (a main street and a neighborhood) is perfect: far enough off (about a quarter mile of paved street) to be park like in its quiet, accessible to small shops nearby, and only a 10 minute easy walk by the Palace to Thamel, the main tourist district.

Top Local Tips for Kathmandu

Nagarkot day trip from Kathmandu We had a short stay in Nepal, but wanted to get out of Kathmandu. We rented a car and driver for $45, and drove 32 kms to Nagarkot. Supposedly takes 45 minutes. Takes about 1 1/2 hours, with traffic, if you're anywhere in the middle of Kathmandu. The road is well paved, very narrow, scenic. You climb about 3200 feet, to a ridge that is at 7200 ft (2175 mtrs). There's an outlook for the Himalayas, and a very nice restaurant at a small hotel. We were suspicious of the name, Club Himalaya Nagarkot, but it was really very quiet, and understated. We wished we could have spent the night there, and would definitely recommend it to anyone (we asked to see a room, and it was breathtaking, with a deck and full view of the mountains - and no smog!).

Himalayan Tours with Buddhi Prasad Bhatta Travelled solo to Nepal & Bhutan. Hesitant at first, but glad I did. It was my first time in Nepal and I treated myself to a lovely hotel Dwarika's and can highly recommend it and have. I'm not a trekker, so this wasn't the purpose of my trip. Enjoyed visiting all the world heritage sites and waslucky enough to have a guide who was reliable and very knowledeable. Very flexible too as I don't like travelling in groups for this specific purpose. He caught on quickly on what were my interests and made recommendations/suggestions accordingly. If you only have a few days, hire a guide and driver. Buddhi Prasad Bhatta was my guide and his card states that he's a member of a tour guides association. Enjoy your travels!
