Nice and relaxing

from Ian_and_Helen_C
There are few things that would make me sit in one place for 10 hours next to someone who can't sit still for 2 minutes, but I must say, Club Faru is one of those things. We both loved it! I have never relaxed so much in my life. I was so chilled out, if I did anything more than have a swim in the morning, I would be falling asleep in the afternoon. The rooms and all customer areas were very clean and comfortable, however, if like us, you canoe around the island you will see a few piles of rubbish. I can recommend the Thai Spa, during the second week the wife tried to drown me in the pool-luckily she failed-and I damaged my neck. I went to the spa and in two sessions I was fixed and relaxed. The food was great and having a very picky eater for a wife I was very worried that she wouldn't eat a thing, I was wrong, we both ate very well (in fact, way too well!). As mentioned by everyone, the drinks are all branded and the lager was just about pallatable in the absence of bitter. The whiskey (VAT 69) was nice, even though I had never heard of it. I would advise that if you want to go on one of the fishing trips, go Sunset Fishing, not Night Fishing-you can end up feeling very ill waiting for them to cook your food. I found out on the last day that the guys from the boat house will take you big game fishing for $150, you may be able to catch a Sail fish if they are in season. If you are considering hiring your snorkling gear, get it from the boat house, NOT the dive centre. The boat house charge $10 p/wk, the dive centre $30 p/wk-do the math. I hope you have a good a time as we did.

For personal reasons this was a "just have to get away now" holiday. We booked one week before departure. We had been to Lily Beach, Kuramathi Blue Lagoon and Vilu Reef 5 times in total and could not believe the price this time (£750). We didn't expect too much. We had read some bad reviews - but took the gamble. Boy!! Are we glad we did!! Of all the flights we've had, this First Choice one out of Gatwick was the best. We were off to a good start. The arrival on the island isn't as idyllic as we'd had before (lots of concrete slabs rather than sand, and a distinct lack of flora) but don't let that put you off. The island was excellent, especially if you consider the amount you pay. Yes, the accommodation is basic but gives everything you need. We were in a downstairs room and thought it was spacious, cool and clean. Apparently those on the upper floor can hear the noise of rain on the roof (not that it rained that often - and when it did it was still lovely and warm!). The food, without doubt, was the best we've had anywhere in the Maldives. There's something for everyone and plenty of it. The location of the island brought a dimension that you don't normally get in the Maldives - we visited Male twice (fascinating), and adjacent islands. Aircraft landings and the passing of boats provided interest rather than annoyance. The island doesn't have its own reef but there are some good snorkelling areas around (follow the underwater pipe from the little jetty on the opposite side of the island from the main jetty). There are 2 free snorkelling trips per day to local reefs which got you out and about - lovely! During our fortnight there were lots of Brits (made some good friends - you know who you are!), a few Germans and an interesting party of Chinese. So - if you get a good price, don't hesitate to go. We gather the prices will be going up considerably next year so take the opportunity while you can.

Basic but just whats needed!

We booked our holiday through First choice and after reading some of the earlier reviews we were a little apprehensive! We upgraded the flight to Star-Class and although it looks great you don't really get value for money, you are better off in the economy with the new leg-room its just as comfortable (and I am 6ft 3")and you can get all the best films for just £5!
When you land and get your luggage you are asked to wait in a cafe area for the rest of the passengers, be aware that the prices here are ridiculous! the boat trip to the hotel is only 10mins so I would advise you to just wait as when you get there all the drinks are free anyway!.
We got our room (104) which was close to the bar at the end of the island and can be a little noisy in the evenings, but we were usually out until the music stopped anyway!!! All the drinks are named brands such as smirnoff and the bottles of water are free(apparantly this is not so on all the all-inclusives on the maldives).
There is not much to do on the island except RELAX and thats exactly what we did!. There were very few children so it was always peaceful by the pool and there is no entertainment team annoying you to play games! lol. Have a go on the free canoes it was great fun, but watch out for the current! I would definately recomend either buying your own or hiring some snorkelling equipment as some of the things you see are magnificent!
All the staff are very friendly and always smiling even though they seem to work seven days per week!! We were told that tipping is reccommended and it does improve the service you recieve ;-) so we tipped the waiter at the middle of the first week and then the end off the second week($20 each time) and that made sure you never waited for anything! The food was excellent and always plenty of choice.
One thing that I would definately reccomend is to be in the beach bar at around 6pm to watch the sunset, it truly was beautiful, also when in this bar in the evening sit out on the verander and when the tide is in you can see sting-rays and manta-rays swimming underneath you! Overall the value for money is brilliant and really you just can't complain! We went on this holiday to relax and thats exactly what we got.
Also hi to Mark and Alison, good to be back eh? lol. I

best all inclusive holiday

from paulstabb
Having read some reviews we were apprehensive about our trip. When we arrived to the minute we left we were delighted. The accommodation was clean and comfortable. The drinks were all branded and water/soft drinks were freely available all day. The all inclusive food was the best we've had anywhere and the island was a delight. Service and staff were always friendly & helpful. Included in the package were 2 free daily snorkelling trips to different reef locations.

Although the island was close to the airport there was no unacceptable noise levels and the view of the 'new' Male was not that offensive.
We shared a dining table with a couple from leicester who seemed to enjoy the holiday as much as we did. Roger & Vanda - if you read this we would love to hear from you!

I would recommend club faru to anyone who likes a beach holiday and the 10 hour flight was well worth it.

paradise with new friends

from chicccco
going to the maldives was always going to be exciting, but was to be one of our most memorable will stay with me and karen arrive at male airport after a long flight which was comfortable then after a 10 minute boat ride you arrive at club faru, where you get a welcoming cocktail and wet towel for hands and in was quick and staff take your cases to your room, where we knew the rooms were dated but comfortable.from now on the holiday just got better and better,it is unusual when going for a meal you are given a table with another couple which you share for the rest of your holiday, thats where we met matt & nicki whom i could write a book about fantastic couple. so going for breakfast, lunch, dinner the food selection was first class as a big hungry scotsman i like my food and was not disapointed, even porridge for breakfast lovely. the actual layout of the island was fine people will complain about the flight path over from the island to male but it did not affect our holiday . drinks are good with brands from back home (bacardi, gordons gin, etc) beer was tiger excellent wine rose, white & red whom matt know has shares in company. cocktails you had to pay which is a surprise considering you are all inclusive. people we met actually made our hols from robbie n claire( whit a man using hair straightners) to mark n donna who were on honeymoon, rosie n steph (mum n daughter) really nice people whom you could rely on for a talk anytime of the day. lots more to which i say thanks but the biggest thanks is to the staff at club faru from cleaners, bag carriers, bar staff, chefs and waitng staff. this is where i write about our waiter (alright my cocker) waseem a guy who looked after our every needs from his service to his singing, jokes, and oragami a great wee guy who worked so hard you would want to go back just to see him. it was a really fabulous holday where ther was no complaints from me or karen and yes we will be back. i good write about snorkelling, island hopping, male shopping, weather. but this was about club faru and our new friends.

Fantastic Club Faru

from BrownPrincess
We have just arrived back after a fortnight at Club Faru. The hotel exceeded all expectations. The food was first class, especially if you're fond of Sri Lankan curries! Most of the staff come from Sri Lanka but all were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The room was lovely and clean - huge bed. It's a great little island and we can't wait to go back. The only gripe I would have is the First Choice rep. We found her to be very rude.

Club Faru, Value for money, lovely tropical island not paradise island

from encompass
Hello to all who were there when we were there 11th Sept - 25th Sept.

Karen, Charlie, Rob, Claire, Matt, Nikki, Gary & Ruth. what a great bunch of guys.

We went here for our honeymoon, its personal choice but we wouldn’t really recommend club faru as a romantic getaway for a lush honeymoon. If you want a posh, private romantic getaway then I would recommend another Island.
It’s more of a getaway from it all holiday with some fun.

Firstly I will say that the food on this island is very very good, you can’t fault the quality, quantity, freshness, range, taste and overall selection available. The pastry chef has the Asia Silver award and proves it with his lovely selection of puddings and fresh fruits.

You can have food prepared whilst you wait; the steamed rice is superb as are the curries. There is something for everyone from soups to salads, breads to chips; curries to hot pots, lamb steaks to chicken cooked every possible way and lots of fresh fruits and scummy puddings.

I suffer with food and the only thing I suffered from was heat stroke.

We recommend a candle lit meal on the beach, £50 for a slap up meal and with great service, (dont do it on an entertainmetn night.)

Club Faru is an island that is recovering from the wave, this is noticeable at some locations with rubbish and debris but can only really be seen if you venture out on a canoe to the far tip of the island.
The island is not a luxury get away from it all in the middle of nowhere island; if you want this don’t come here. You are close to the airport, Male and can see some other islands nearby.
At night there are lots of lights on the far side so you don’t really feel like you are to far away. You will see planes flying into land but cannot see them land at the airport. To be honest you don’t really hear them if the wind is blowing the other way, its more fascinating than annoying, the sea planes are background noise.
There are boats that travel back and forth, you will hear them but they disappear into the overall island experience.
There seemed to be a couple of days a week which were transfer days, there were a few boats and planes etc.. then the rest of the week was peace & quiet.

The beaches are very nice with white sand, lots of little shell crabs waddling about which are really sweet but not at all scary. The sea is so blue & clear, there are lots of fishes swimming about which are amazing. You can snorkel under the dive school jetty but be careful of the dive boats. (Great fish there and at the rock nearby.)

There is a bit of broken coral from the wave but you can see lots, be careful of the currents, they are mainly there when the tides change and can be quite strong, (knock you off your feet), even in the shallows. You can walk right out in places and it never gets deep.

The water sports are great, windsurfing is good value for money but be careful if you are not experienced, rescue is not a priority. Stay where you know and in the shallows, don’t sail out into the main Lagoon towards the airport or round the furthest point of the island, the wind drops here and the current will catch you out.
Canoes are free and well maintained, life vests are free, snorkel & flippers for 2 weeks hire will cost you about £15, you can buy them in the island shop for about the same price.

The sun is HOT in the Maldives, we have been to hot places but this is HOT HOT, don’t be silly and take a high factor, 25 min, you will burn quickly if you are not careful. You will still burn when it’s cloudy.

The staff are very friendly and good at their jobs, they work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week with 1 month off a year so please respect them, they work very hard to make you feel welcome. Yazeeme is a great waiter and a joker, Sam is a very friendly bar man. They will treat you well and won’t expect tips however it is nice to tip them, tips go into a pot to be shared about.

One point to make is that you may get sat with other people at meal times, a bit odd at first but we made 2 great new friends, Gary & Ruth. (You can request otherwise). If you have a birthday, honeymoon or anniversary they will decorate your table, sing to you and bring out a big cake, fantastic and everyone joins in to sing etc..

The only let down about this island is the rooms, they are still in the 70's, our room was cleaned twice a day but was grubby, the shower will only give hot water if all the lights are on. They are very very basic, it was a shock to us at first, we were tired and it made us feel cheated but once we settled in to the island all we did was sleep in them.
They are air conditioned, (keep it on all the time & keep the doors & windows closed to keep out humidity). Take a travel kettle and travel iron, there are electronic safes in the room and 2 built in wardrobes.
Our fan was coated with dust and filthy, we mentioned it twice to the rep but it never got cleaned which was disappointing, the air conditioner packed up, we told reception and within 10 mins they had a new one in.
Don’t expect anything plush, these really are basic rooms, they do make you feel like you away from it all which is quite cool.
We had one cock roach and some knats in the loo which went away after a slipper and a spray.
We got bitten once and that was outside. The island is frequently fogged to rid of pests.

The bars are good, 2 of them, there is a games room with pool, books, TV, ping pong and other bits and bobs.

Drink lots of water, big bottles available from any bar.

Entertainment, live band on Sundays, (that was me playing drums to Summer of 69), disco and sing along. This island doesn’t need entertainment every night so if you want entertainment go to Ibiza; the Maldives is a place to relax and not to party.

The overall experience was good; we had a lovely time and met some lovely people.
Male airport is very modern and comfortable, no real problems here at all. 10 min boat transfer is a bit rough but you get there quick and are greeted with a cold towel and cool drink.

The BIGGEST SHOCK was from FIRST CHOICE, this was our honeymoon, we paid allot of money to upgrade to star class and were sat apart on the flights in and out. Watch out for this, First Choice's idea of sitting together is been in the same section of the plane and nothing else. Make sure you check before you fly and don’t take, “You are sitting together." for an answer.
This is a crafty ploy to sell more seats. We are very disappointed with First Choice, they ruined honeymoon experience from Gatwick check in. We are so angry that they do this to people, we were not the only couple, they even split up a family with 2 kids.
There is nothing that no end of complaining can do, your seats are allocated when you book so please check.

If you are going to Club Faru then you will have a lovely time, the food is 4 star, the rooms are 2 star if that, I would grade the island overall as 2 star not 3.

Please email us for photos etc..

I must be dreaming

Hi to all,
I have just returned from 2 weeks on club Faru. I read the reviews and was concerned. However I did not need to be.
the place is magic. It is quiet, peaceful, beautiful, friendly and exciting all at the same time. You hardly notice the planes and boats at all. The swiming/snorkleing restriction are only arround the jetty ( same on all Islands) and they warn you to be carefull of the currents. The rooms are basic but you spend so little time in them that it does not matter. There were no complaints from guest staying in down stairs rooms about smells or ants or anything like that. The island is sprayed regulaly and we never got bit or infested. One tip is to keep your toilet door closed as mossie,s do get in through the extractor. We destroyed them at night before retiring. Another tip is to turn on all lights before having a shower as it will be cold if you dont.
I am well travelled and I can honestly say that this was the best holiday ever. I met some fantastic people and I cant put into words just how awesome the experience was.
The food was fantastic in both quality and variety and everthing was freshly prepaired. No body had any tummy aches at all. The resturant staff and the chef's always had time for you and were willing to talk and tell you about the food and its preparation, Maldevian customs or anything else you wanted.
I could go on for ever about the good things this holiday had to offer but if you are still in two minds I will be more than happy to accept your ticket and go for you, (He-He)
Really just go and enjoy it's magic

I would like to thank : Charlie and Karen, Rob and Claire, Matt and Nicki, Munta, Wazeem, Susantha, Mangula and everyone who made this such a cherrished memorable holiday

Fabulous Faru

from mcw69
We decided to visit Club Faru when we found out we were moving house within days of our holiday - out went the trekking holiday in came lazy days on the beach in beautiful surroundings with a pile of books and snorkel mask for entertainment.

We travelled with First Choice - the flights in both directions were excellent and the increased seat pitch in the standard seats was much appreciated. Any minor issues were dealt with quickly and efficiently.

On arrival at Male there was some delay as there were so many people arriving at the same time but nothing too hideous. If you do not want to pay large amounts for a drink at the cafe - don't sit there whilst you wait for your transfer - we had been warned so had water with us and happily waited on a wall nearby with no problem.

The short crossing to Club Faru was appreciated and it was lovely to be welcomed with ice cold towels and a cold drink.

We stayed in an upstairs room and found no fault at all. The room was cleaned twice a day and kept spotless. The rooms are fairly simple - but perfectly adequate - who wants a fussy room when so little time is spent there. The aircon was very efficient and included in the price.

As far as food and drink were concerned we were very impressed. We are not picky eaters but we do enjoy good quality food and at Club Faru we were not disappointed. There was always plenty of choice of well prepared food. The drinks were branded and most included in the all inc. Cocktails were extra but reasonably priced as were other drinks not included.

We spent most of the holiday just relaxing on stunning beaches - yes it is near the airport and Male, but it still easy to find places which look out to sea rather than at the closer islands. We snorkelled everyday from the beach and saw a wide variety of fish.
We went out on the dolphin spotting trip and after a couple of hours we were rewarded by seeing a large group of about 80 swimming around the boat and putting on a spectacular show.
We also went out several times on the free snorkelling trips. Club Faru does not have a house reef so the trips take you out to different reefs nearby. These were hugely enjoyable but you did need to be a confident swimmer. The boat would drop us near to the drop off but would then need to pull back to safe distance away from the reef. Once more a huge variety of fish were seen - and I was fortunate enough to see a black tipped reef shark and some large rays off Bandos.
On one of the snorkelling trips we ended up having another encounter with the dolphins which was once again amazing but on this occasion free!

We also took the free excursion to Male - it was good to see something of local life but to be honest this was the only part of the trip we did not enjoy. The guide who took our group pointed a couple of local sights and then took us to a shop where an assisstant escorted us around trying hard to persuade us to buy something - and that was the extent of the trip.

Overall - we were unsure what to expect as we had seen some negative reviews but we had one of the best holidays we have ever had . We have travelled to a range of long haul destinations and stayed in a number of all inclusive resorts but this one beat them all hands down. Why? It may not be the most luxurious of Maldivian hotels or the most deserted of Maldivian islands but the standards of cleanliness, food, drink, service, friendliness and welcome were outstanding particularly when you consider the price for an all inclusive holiday.

We had a fantastic time, have recommended it to others and would return ourselves - but there is a big world out there ....

Our first time in the Maldives in July/Aug 2006. Where do we begin ? As the others having not read many positive reviews we were a little worried about going to Club Faru. How wrong were we !!! We experienced 2 weeks of sheer paradise and cannot fault any part of this island.
We also had Waseem as our waiter, who made every meal an experience to remember ! Food is fantastic with an endless choice, our room was simple but had everything we needed and cleaned twice a day. The service is unbelievable no matter what you asked for they'd get it even if it wasn't on the island !
The beaches are breathtaking and even they are cleaned every day ! ( all day long ! ) Yes it is close to the airport but we did not find this a problem and the transfer time is short and great fun on a speedboat !
The diving here is out of this world and all the guys at the dive centre really look after you as if you are one of the family ! Went to some fabulous dive sites and dived with the manta's, sharks and turtles also thousands of fish to which only know the name of a handful. The free snorkelling trips twice a day are equally as good ( just not quite so deep ).
If you go you must visit Male as its such a contrast to the peace and serenity of the island plus its free !!!! Met John and Flora from London who made our holiday. Hello you guys!
If you are a bit concerned about visiting Club Faru please don't be as you will not be disappointed. We will not hesitate and cannot wait to go back. Thanks to all the staff as they all became such good friends. Keep up the good work and we will be back.

Top Local Tips for Male

Very busy Keep covered up and be prepared to be groped!!!

Mossies If visiting Male be sure to put on lots of insect repellant. We went for a couple of hours and were bitten by the mossies. We never had any problems on Bandos as they spray the island regularly.
