Top Local Tips for Sandakan

Sepilok Go by taxi in the afternoon. We were told by the staff that it it is very quiet at feeding time unlike the morning. Take one of the treks after feeding time - you need a free permit from reception. We bumped into an Orang utan - great fun. If it is wet under foot then in the non boarded areas leeches can be a problem.

Visit the orang utans while there is time A visit to Sandakan would not be complete without a visit to the Sepilok Orang Utan Centre which is easily reached by taxi or one of the mini buses that abound. The Centre seems to be busier in the morning so is well worth a return visit in the afternoon using your daily ticket. Unfortunately due to the large number of palm plantations for palm oil, orang utans might not be around in the wild for many more years so a visit to the centre is the best option. We had a very close encounter with an orang utan at the entrance gate. He was only about three feet from us and was closely monitored by a volunteer keeper. Do visit and support this centre.

English Tea House Vist the tea house next door to Agnes Keith's house. We had scones with jam and clotted cream. Don't expect Devonshire standards but the experience and setting were great and you can play croquet on the lawn. They also serve main meals.
