The hotel itself is simple but stylish and the rooms follow suit being very comfortable with all the usual mod cons. There is also a fabulous roof terrace bar with great cocktails and an excellent view of the town and harbour.
I really recommend staying here when visiting Sandakan!

Top Local Tips for Sandakan
Snif out the best & only bar in Sandakan town Must check out Balin Roof Garden,Nak hotel in Sandakan town. Its a real hidden Jem,make your way through dark stairways and be pleasantly surprised by the breath taking view of the old town and harbour front. Mojitos & Chilled beers ,perfect for the KK Mountaineering aftermath.
Balin Roof Garden Its a must visit if you've had too much beer in the jungle, get your cocktail & chilled white wine fix here!
don't bother I came to see Sepilok, but overall I would say the experience is overrated. Firstly at Sandakan airport they tried to pull a 'swifty' on me by claiming all our luggage wouldn't fit into one cab so I would need two. (Not enough tourists to rip off so they worked together to milk us and earn a living). Then we went on the 2-day Sukou river cruise and I would recommend this (even though I am not a great nature lover) because it was an interesting experience and they took good care of you. We then negotiated with a 4-wheel dirve taxi to go overland to go diving at Sipidan. Again worth it for the experience but next time I stay in KK and fly directly to Kapalai or one of the other diving resorts. KK is great! Kapalai was out of this world!! I also recommend booking though Olaf's Borneo. He helped me though all the questions to make sure I was getting what I wanted at a price I felt comfortable with. he even gave me a discount because it was xmas day or the New Year or something like that.

We arrived at NAK on the 2nd night of our 5 day visit to Sandakan and our room overlooked the famous Sandakan harbour. The hotel combines the perfect blend of old and new, having all the modern day facilities (Cable TV in the rooms, complete with HBO and ESPN, Wifi in the lobby etc)
The location of NAK hotel is excellent, being in the heart of the old town, we were also only 5 minutes drive from the jetty from where we had to leave for Lankayan island for the final leg of our journey.
The hotels rooftop garden above the 8th floor of the hotel is worth the stay alone. While it may not be physically as high as Sirocco of Bangkok or the Sky bar of Kuala Lumpur, Balin' rooftop garden certainly makes its mark along Sandakan's town harbour, with a splendid view of the sea and the hills behind you, you feel what used to be the mini HongKong of the 60's come to life. And these days, while the town lights may not be blinding, a few more drinks, and you start feeling glad you are staying a mere 2 floors away.
