Georgetown is a car dominated society You can see some of the attractions by walking around. However my advice is to either hire a car/motorbike or take the organised trips through your hotel

Bus v Ferry If you are getting a bus to or from Penang and staying in Georgetown, or the north side of the island, it's worth noting that most buses go into Butterworth before turning around and going over the bridge to Penang. The long distance bus station is some way out of Georgetown. We were advised by a local to get off at Butterworth and get the ferry to Georgetown. The bus station in Butterworth is literally next to the ferry terminal and the ferry fare is far less than the price of a bus or taxi from the long distance bus station in Penang to Georgetown. Also it's rather a romantic ferry ride...

Trishaw drivers - a must Although we were a little bit skeptical about having a trishaw driver take us on a tour around Georgetown, by the end of our journey we were in love with him and would recommend the experience to anyone. Our guy was a skinny little old bloke, with wiry muscles who could handle our combined weights (!) on his trishaw with only a bit of effort. He had been in the job for 40 years, and knew all the gossip of the town, the history and got us into little places which were extremely interesting and not in our guidebooks or maps. He was a refreshing change from the professional tour guides we've had, who keep reiterating the same themes of Malaysia, which when the same phrases are uttered again and again, make you wonder how truthful they are and how much they believe in them! Our trishaw guy was fantastic and real and I could speak more highly of him.
