Historical Traveller Reviews of Tanjung Rhu Resort Hotel

Beautiful setting

from Veryfussy
Tanjung Rhu has a beautiful loaction on probably the best beach I have ever seen. The landscaping of the resort is also very attractive with a lovely pool area. The rooms are large and well designed , particularly the Bayu Senya with seaview and two small balconies. The gym is small but wiyh a great view and there are activities such as complimentary yoga . the spa was also very pleasant. Service is very good (but not as good as the Datai where we also stayed) and the overall ambience is lovely. Had a great holiday here. My only reason for not giving it five stars is that I found the food in the restaurants to be variable and sometimes not very good. However one of the restaurants was closed for renovation so this should improve. Spoilt by the Datai really but Tanjung Rhu had the advantage of being closer to Kuah town (25 RM each way by taxi) and probably the better beach. Tanjung Rhu also more family friendly (which is another reason why I liked The Datai because my kids are grown up now!)

Fantastic hotel

Huge, luxurious rooms - worth paying the extra cost for the larger than standard room. The all-inclusive option is a must - there are very few alternatives and this package is extremely good value for excellent food. Huge sandy beach to rival the Caribbean. Excellent service. Beautiful pool. Concierge very helpful. Hotel has a few convertible Peugeots available for hire by the day at a reasonable cost. Excellent spa facilities - great couples massage.

Combined with four nights at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur - also a very good hotel.

Excellent value for money

We have just returned from ten nights at the Tanjung Rhu Resort and it exceeded all our expectations.
You must take the All Inclusive option, which includes almost everything, except alcoholic drinks, but even these were reasonably priced.
The food was very good at all the restaurants and compares well with the best restaurants and hotels around the world.
The service was good and the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Room service, however, could be very slow, with a wait of over an hour at busy times and the food was not hot when it arrived. It is better to eat in the restaurants, where the service was never slow.
The rooms are large. Unless you intend to entertain in your room or have children, the Bayu Suria and Bayu Senja rooms are excessively large, with two lounge areas. Nevertheless, if you require a sea view, you have to pay for the Bayu Senja room.
In some brochures the hotel is recommended for couples and honeymooners, but during our stay, there were many children of all ages and they tended to become bored and run around unsupervised when the parents were eating in the evenings.
Despite some reservations, we would recommend the hotel, which offers generally high standars and is exellent value when compared with the Four Seasons just along the coast and the Datai.

Not quite in the top bracket

from hotel-snob-london
Maybe i am getting spoilt living out in asia but this was not quite as good as i thought it would be. the beach is absolutely lovely but the hotel is a step below the really high end resorts that are around and dare i say it a bit on the tired side (if applying very high standards). that said it is still very nice and for people with kids the large rooms will be a real bonus.

Terrific place....will get better

Our second trip to the resort.

What did not meet expectations - Some small bumps but there nevertheless. Even thought I'd confirmed booking several times and even had long conversations with the staff about the construction on-site, the room was not ready upon arrival. Long hot trip and not being able to throw down the bags and collapse is never a great start. In addition, about the construction, its not only the new pool (and villa) area well off to one side of the resort but one of the restaurants is shut down and the actual units are being refurbished three at a time. Not an issue unless you're next door but if you are...LOUD. In fact several people were relocated to the Datai during our stay because they were booked into rooms near the construction and not informed.

What's great - the rooms, the food (better even than during our last trip there), the beach, the value, the view. What really makes the place is the staff. Even by Asian, top-class standards, they are terrific. Wonderful staff at the "rhu" restaurant and poolside. Very child friendly. They are feeling the heat from the new four seasons, hence all the new construction. Its a wonderful value for 5 stars but they will lose the deluxe crowd to the four seasons eventually because of added privacy. We took boat tours of the four seasons area and the place looks nice but the often mentioned cement plant is definitely smack in the middle of the view from the left side of the resort.

We've stayed at the rhu during 25 and 50% occupancy and I would advise checking this. Other returnees mentioned that one should never book if its higher than 75% and I agree. The resort is actually quite small and most of the action goes on near the main pool. More than 50% means quite a crowd in this one area.

Overall, Tanjung Rhu Resort is one of the finest hotels we ever stayed. We were there in Feb 2005, staying in Cahaya room all inclusive package, which is a must if you intended to go there. The hotel ground is lovely and well kept. Food is excellent and the service is world class. The room is spacious and well design. To us, without any doubt, Tanjung Rhu is a must if you by any chance travelling in Malaysia. For what you pay, this resort has the best value for $$$.

Best place in Langkawi by far !

from Lordwizard
Ok, you won't find here the typical "private villa's". Only huge rooms in a 3 floors building in a ring shape around a laguna pool...
But otherwise, every other little thing here is like paradise!

-The Beach: the very best one in the whole island
-The Food: excellent
-People: so nice and gentle
-the Calm: even in high season, every thing is so quiet!!

Highly recommanded hotel

So relaxing!

from nenek
We have just spent 6 days at the Tanjung Rhu with our 3 small children (5,3 and1 years). We went hoping to have fun, but still expecting to return home exhausted, as we always do. But I have to say that the children had a ball AND my husband and I feel relaxed and rejunvenated after a wonderful holiday! We stayed here 6 years ago and loved it, but thought of it as more of an adults' hotel, so had hesitated to return. But we were longing for a beach holiday, and thought that we'd give it a try. It is not a hotel which specifically caters for children, which we prefer anyway - and when you have a beach as lovely as this, what else do the little ones need? The guests were mostly couples, but there is enough space for a family not to feel they are getting in the way of those holidaying without children. There is also a beautiful "grown up" pool, and a shallow, sandy lagoon pool. Since the lagoon pool is mostly in the shade, the sun-seekers avoid it, so it is suitable for the children.
A housekeeping lady babysat for us some nights, and we enjoyed dining at the various restaurants. The staff throughout the hotel are fantastic, unobtrusive, efficient and always friendly.
Can't imagine anyone not having a wonderful holiday here.

Stunning location, huge airy room with fantstic facilities (an expresso coffee maker machine as well as flat screen TV). The grounds are beautiful with water features and lush vegetation. Food out of this world (rated "The Rhu" restaurant the best) There were no restrictions on menus on our all inclusive deal (ecellent value) and by far the best option -- you can eat all day if you want to! Website and other photos on web do not do this resort justice, I was totally jaw dropped when I saw our Beyu seaview room. Best trips out were the mangrove swamp and the trip up the cable car where you can walk across a stunning suspension bridge - views awesome. (newly opened this year). Totally relaxing holiday.
