Historical Traveller Reviews of Hyatt Regency Kuantan Hotel
Good hotel if not 5 star
The reviews here certainly give a mxied view of the hotel. I would agree with "good 4 star" overall. In terms of location it is excellent with a private beach alongside a locals beach. Being honest I prefered the locals beach as it had more colour rather than slowly roasting lounging tourists. The hotel clientelle are a mixture of Malaysians and foreigners. My only complaint was about the French and Eastern Europeans who were arrogant at reception, pushing in whilst I was checking in. As a 6 foot Englishman I have no problems telling them off while the staff try to manage them politely. I note an earlier review complained about Malaysians being there but this is Malaysia so what do you expect! I strongly suggest if you do not want to meet locals stay in Manchester! Or go to Liverpool for excitement. Staff were always freindly and polite with a good selection of bars in the hotel. A Sheraton is being built next door, now at the fit out stage, so it will not disturb you staying as all construction work is over. The beach has a sharp shelf drop and it is notably steeper outside the new hotel, so the Hyatt gets the better deal. Alongside the town and beach are some superb walks into forest and an entertaining colony of monkeys. This part of town does get quiet at night, but the centre is a 10 minute drive away. If you are looknig for an 18-30 break, go elsewhere. If you want a quality relaxing break do consider this.
Okay hotel - very poor service
Stayed here while on Kuoni Malaysian Discovery Tour. This hotel was in an okay building on a nice stretch of beach. However, we found the service to be the worst of all the hotels we stayed in. Staff simply did not seem to care about the welfare of the guests - most evident in the fact that out of the four couples who stayed here who were on the tour, 3 of them were overcharged for meals etc and had to argue with rude staff to get errors resolved. Very disappointing.
Lovely setting, Hotel requires TLC
we stayed at the hyatt for 1 night. The setting is beautiful, but, the hotel is a little tired and requires some TLC. On arrival the check in was very slow and although we requested an early check in our rooms were not ready and we did have to wait 2 hours for both rooms to be available. I would recommend this hotel but for short stays only.
Good value for money

Having read a few negative reviews of the Hyatt we weren't sure what to expect. However we found the hotel to be very good value for money. The rooms are a little tired and need to be refurbished. However they were very clean and comfortable and everything needed is provided. The setting more than makes up for the tired rooms, on a beautiful white sandy bay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the food in both the main restaurant and the grill restaurant on the beach was very good. We weren't so impressed with the Italian restaurant but maybe we just chose badly. The snack food at the bar at lunchtime was also of very good quality. We would definately return to this hotel.
good overall stay

am just back from spending a few nights at the hyatt kuantan with the family and generally enjoyed our stay. the beach was excellent, the staff friendly and curteous. the only complaint that we have is that the rooms are due for refurbishment and also not enough activities, apart from the beach and pool for the kids. nevertheless, if we decide to holiday in kuantan again, we shall make hyatt our first option.
After reading a few of the guest comments my wife and I were reluctant to book the hotel. Other friends that have stayed mentioned that its the best hotel in Kuantan. Naturally we were puzzled but we decided to go with Hyatt. Must say to our surprise the previous listed photos seem very outdated themselves? We experienced lush gardens and landscaping, the building was sound as it seems much renovation work has been done. The grounds and pool areas are very neat and clean. The hotel is not 5 star but for the price I paid it will do me next time I stay in Kuantan. Our only complaint would be that it was to quiet during our stay, maybe due to monsoon. Oh and one other thing they need to get rid of the carpet in the rooms as for a resort sand must be difficult to remove, try to book a ground floor room too nice and close to the beach and pools.
Not what photo shows - Construction and limited activities but...great beach
The location is great. This hotel has the best beach to its own. A few beach chairs and such but I checked the entire stretch of hotels and this has the best. The breakfast here is pricey but is much better than the other hotels I stayed in. However the rooms are dim and small. The worse thing is a building is under construction and certain rooms are subject to other people peeking in unless you draw all curtains. The staff here were courteous.
There are two pools and towels can be rented for free using your towel card.Activity here is limited. The buildings and furniture are old.I feel that its not worth the money except for the beach.
Not what you would expect

The hotel is situated on a stunning stretch of beach but is not the 4/5* luxury resort it is painted as.
Rooms are shabby dated and not as clean as they should be - several guests I spoke to had moved rooms because of damp and broken furniture.
Beware local holidays as the hotel is popular with Malaysian families who take over the hotel and pool to the exclusion of tourists
A bit of paradise
The Hyatt Regency is built along a beautiful stretch of beach. The hotel has seen better days but maintenance and painting work is being carried out. The rooms which cost between US$56 and US$70 are reasonably clean and the staff pleasant and helpful.
Most charming of all is the Malay-style restaurant which is very close to the sea. The breakfast buffet is great, but the best time to dine there is in the evening when the tide comes in and one hears the waves breaking just meters from the dining table.
Nice and sunny place
The hotel is really starting to show his age, especially the rooms. We booked Regency Club room with Sea View which was clean with nice sea view. The swimming pool and areas around the hotel are well kept. Breakfast was ok. Evening meals are well presented but is better to eat a la carte. The regency club is nothing special but they serve free wine which is very expensive in the restaurants. The staff is really nice and they are trying their best to please everyone. Nice tennis court and gym. We went to the lake Chini for a day trip. It is worth visit. I reccomend this hotel for relaxing holiday by the sea.
Top Local Tips for Kuantan
the curry mee at the shop house is nice. Except the shop is abit dark & old
Best if you have your transport
The good thing about Hyatt is that it's not too far from town, and from Cherating or Kemaman, which means you can enjoy your Starbucks, but also take a drive and see the outskirts and fishing village, and more importantly enjoy the original keropok lekor and satar (local delicacies)
Busy at weekends
If arriving at the weekend beware that the beach is a favorite location for locals (dont blame them its nice enough) - traffic and queues near the hotel can last for 15 mins or so. Watch out for the monkeys just inside or outside the hotel carpark entrance- dont feed and Yes they bite!
