If I am not mistaken, The Westin is only 3 years old. A decent size hotel. I think the interior decorator was thinking of "less is more concept" when he/she decorated the hotel. There is a good latino bar on the groundfloor called Qbar with a latino band performing probably 5-6 nights a week. Entrance is free. It is a smallish bar with outdoor seating, lively. Decent area. Next door is JW Marriott Hotel, Bintang Walk (outdoor cafes/clubs I think), Star Hill (an upmarket shopping mall), and also Planet Hollywood. The only problem with this area is traffic jam!

Good hotel for short stays

I stayed here for a 3 day weekend and used my SPG points. Stayed on an SPG floor and the room was quite nice along with a spacious bathroom. The room was on a top floor facing the rear of the hotel. Don't get a room facing the front of the hotel. There's major construction across the street. The staff was courteous and nice. The gym has top notch equipment. One of the better equipped hotel gyms I've been too. Conveniently located to lots of malls and restaurants. It's not a resort hotel, but it's a good hotel to stay at for long weekend and enjoy the shopping and food KL has to offer.

Very acceptable business hotel

Have stayed here 3 times on business now, each time was fine, service good, room good, breakfast EXCELLENT, other meals ok. Rates vary from very expensive during key events (such as GP) to very reasonable outside of these (about Euro 90 inc breakfast - which is the best I have experienced). I would stay again.

Great location

We stayed at the Westin in KL en route to Penang. Admittedly we were only there for 2 nights but thought the hotel was great especially its location.

On the first night we ate at Eest (sic), one of the restaurants at the Westin. Thought the lighting was a little too low which made reading the muenu difficult, but apart from that had a good meal. Found the staff in the bar to be very friendly and attentive so was surprised by other comments about erratic service.

The rooms were of the standard you would expect of a 5 star hotel. Special mention must go to the Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Shower - sheer bliss. We were on 29th floor and were not disturbed by the works at the construction site. Every city in the world has construction sites and the Westin cannot be blamed for the one on its doorstep - it didn't cause us a problem and we didn't find it dusty. We had a view of the Petronas Twin Towers (you have to request this) and it was fantastic watching the inevitable evening thunderstorms with lightning lighting up the towers. Security was good - you can't use the lift without a room key so that helps to stop people who shouldn't be there wandering around.

Breakfast was extra to the room rate but very good with a huge choice of food and very convenient. You could go out and have breakfast elsewhere but this would eat into your time if you only have a limited stay.

The location is great as it is in the heart of the shopping district with several large shopping malls just around the corner. These also contain hawker style eating areas so if you want to eat cheaply it's worth a go. The Monorail station is just around the corner as well, and it was easy to use it to get into China Town and Jalan Petaling.

The hotel was used by both business people and tourists. If I were to visit KL again I wouldn't hesitate to use this hotel again.

Avoid like the plague

I can't help but agree with the last few posters, the Westin KL really should be avoided at all costs.

Don't get me wrong, it's smack in the middle of the shopping area; however be forewarned that there's a massive construction site in front of the Westin and the work goes on till the wee hours of the night. So, if you're a pretty light sleeper like I am, you will definitely be kept awake even if you're on the upper floors. And, if you're allergic to dust, you should bring along a mask when coming or going.

Facilities-wise, it has a pretty modern gym with all the latest gadgets and gizmos. So, if your idea of a holiday is pumping iron, you're in for a treat. However, if you're like me and just want to lounge by the pool, you'll be disappointed 'cause the pool is pretty small and tend to look smaller when families with kids crowd out the area.

And the room? As always I love the Heavenly Bed. But the room is surprisingly begining to look dated although it was opened in 2003. I like the small complimentary Westin branded coffee packets but do wash the provided mugs before using. Ours were downright dusty and had stains around the edges.

Anyway, the reason why I wouldn't return is the service, or the lack thereof. I felt the staff were more interested looking good in their smart-looking uniforms than actually serving the guests. On one occasion, we were five minutes after the breakfast deadline ... the waitress glared at us, slowly looked at her watch, looked up at us again and proceeded to walk away! We took as a sign to follow her, and was seated at a table that had a setting for just one person. Practically had to plead for someone to get me another plate and some cutlery. I kid you not.

By the time we checked out, we were starting to laugh everytime we encountered more cases of the poor service. I mean, is this a five-star hotel or were we being filmed on "Candid Camera"? The check-out staff was surly as well, and when I signed off the bill, he LITERALLY grunted, and which I took for a sign of appreciation and grunted back in reply!

And don't bother complaining to the management, I got back a reply practically saying "thanks but no thanks".

Perfect for the business traveller in Kuala Lumpur

I spent four months working in KL and living in the Westin. After the first month, the staff all knew my name, and I would always get upgraded to the same suite when I checked in after spending weekends out of town.

The rooms are nice, the breakfast buffet (included in the rate) is excellent, and the location is good -- 5 min taxi to KLCC and the twin towers, but near a lot of restaurants and shopping.

The only downside that I would mention is that the standard room service menu is not great-- BUT you can order up food from the other restaurants in the hotel (this is a great business travel tip that works well at other hotels with the same problem as well...)

All in all, the Westin has won my heart and I will go back there whenever I am in KL. The Mandarin and the Shangri-La are not really any better, and are much more expensive. The only hotel in KL that compares is the new Hilton, but that is really far from where i was working (KLCC).

Slightly disappointed

Stayed there for two nights at a suite. In general, Executive Lounge staff is friendly and breakfast at the lounge is decent (not the coffee though). The suite itself was disappointing--you can tell it's poorly finished, there's no shelf in the shower for you to put your shower gels, many amenities missing at the desk. Had to walk around the entire suite to close all curtains and switch off lights. Housekeeping staff throws pillow on floor when changing sheets, so beware. Picked the Westin because of its heavenly bed, but the A/C in the bedroom blew on my head the entire night and I got no sleep. Unfortunately, the position of the vent cannot be changed. So I cranked up the living room's A/C, left my bedroom door open and got some sleep the second night. If I had known that there is a Mandarin in KL, would have stayed there instead.

i stayed in the westin in June 2005 for three nights, my husband was on a business trip..so me and my son had nothing to do except explore the area around. the staff were really helpful, and the room was perfect, with there famous HEAVENLY beds..they have the best kids club i have ever seen and my son didnt want to leave at the end of the day. we stayed in the club rooms so i had access to the lounge which served excellent food throughout the day. room service was good, i didnt try any of the resturants they had. the hotel is very close to the shopping area..there are about 4 malls within a walking distance. i would not recommend this hotel to families with children because i feel that this hotel is targeted for businssmen. its about 10 minutes by car from the patronas towers.

amenities, poor service

Location is great... All malls and shops on this road, KLCC a 2-minute taxi ride. Hotel is new, with great amenities. Rooms are a bit small. Service is lacking, as it seems Malaysians aren't yet used to the level of service seen in Thailand or Singapore. Hotel is good, though.

the welcome wasnt too good

On arrival found the hotel had mucked up our booking and only expected 2 adults 1 child instead of 2 children.They were adamant they were not wrong it was the travel agents fault until i insisted in looking at our file which clearly stated 2 children.Still there was no apology or back down and due to the hotel being full we all had to cram into 1 room.They just didn't seem concerned about our predicament and we were told that it isn't actually a family hotel more a corporate one.We did think this odd as they have a kids club etc.However the rest of our stay was fine the breakfasts were superb and amenities great.

Unpredictable service quality

I stayed here twice this year once in May and then in July. On both occassions the service was erratic. The laundry service is hell bent on charging you the Express Charge although the pressing was sent well within the regular charge hours (happened on both occassions). On one occassion the complimentary coffee pack in the room was torn and there seemed no urgency to replace it. Rooms are plain and BEWARE the telephone charges which are exorbitant! Overall, for the money spent, you could easy find a better hotel in the vicinity.

Top Local Tips for Kuala Lumpur

Taxis Very cheap if insist the taxi you get into charges by the metre rather than a negotiated or reportedly agreed price. Otherwise get another taxi as plenty around. Similar to airport taxis, cheaper one for set price is at very end of the arrival terminal (prepay at a counter located inside terminal), very clean and great service to your hotel door.

Must do... Must visit the Skybar at the Trader's Hotel after dark. Note there is a steep cover charge on Fridays and Saturdays. It is an open air rooftop bar with some shelter from the elements, and the view of the Petronas Towers is awesome!

JW Marriott hotel Go downstairs at the Marriott for dinner. Lots of options, and really good atmosphere. Food is not all bad either
