Historical Traveller Reviews of The Federal Kuala Lumpur Hotel

A disgrace to the country!

from andrew23
I have travelled the world and have stayed in countless four and five star hotels but nothing could have prepared me for this. The Federal has been rated four stars, but I reckon even some of the backpackers in KL could have done better than this! I decided to give the Federal a go as my favourite and usual KL hotel, The Coronade, which is a few blocks away was booked out for the night.

Arriving at 10pm, we were greeted by a very friendly doorman. That was good. The lobby looked OK although it did show signs of aging. Took the escalators up one floor and was greeted by some surly receptionist, and the front desk itself very disorganised. The keycard we received were old-fashioned, haven't seen those in ages (they were those with holes on them).

Took the elevator up to our floor and the horror was just about to begin. Upon exiting the lift, there was this lingering musty and disgusting smell in the air. The light fittings on the wall were about to fall apart. The carpets were dirty, the walls too. There were beds littered along the floor corridors.

Got into our room. It was spooky. Poor lighting. Dirty carpets again, unplesant smell, wardrobes that don't close properly, an ancient safe that didn't work, disgusting cups that I wouldn't let my dog use, the list just goes on. Oh, stained bedspreads!!! Ewww, yuck!!!

Did I say that I could not even take a decent shower? The water trcikled down, the hot and cold water did not mix and the bath tub was filthy. The toilet leaked too.

I was too tired to do anything that night, but I checked out early the next morning and moved to The Coronade.

The Federal was a grand hotel years ago and it's a real shame that it has not been upkept properly. As a Malaysian, I think it's a disgrace to the country because the hotel itself has been a very important piece of Malaysian history!

Discusting

from alibescat78
Upon arrival looked OK but as soon as we got to reception things went down hill staff were rude ignorant and very un welcoming. We asked for rooms next door to our friends they huffed and puffed eventually we were 5 doors apart. We booked a superior room.superior is a word I would not use it was filthy dirty carpet dirty curtains I rang to complain and they told me we had got rooms that were better than what we had booked we were 3rd floor overlooking te pool. Windows wouldnt open bathroom was in need serious attention I felt dirty after my shower. We found ash next to the sink our friend had half a glass of orange in the fridge. There were 4 double beds stacked in the hall directly outside our rooms that came from one room over the hall it had been turned into a pray area with mats on the floor one night we returned to find all the beds flat on the hall floor blocking our way we reported 3 times to reception. Pool area disgraceful full of rust stairs were broken and the one remaining rung broke when my slim freind was trying to get out of the pool. We kept one room as late check out at a cost of 80rgts and then hotel manager called to say we owed 380rgts as we had not checked out at 6pm after lots of discussion we did not pay. We were told a whole night was 250rgt I think they were trying to rob us ! The whole place looks like they have given up on it. Its a real shame as when you look at old photos of the place in reception it looks like it was a great place in the 60's Sahme they have let it go. I really would not reccomend this place.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

from ontheball
We paid for a deluxe room six months early and requested a view because we were staying for eight nights. Were allocated a minute room, the UGLY, with windows blacked out to hide two immense air conditioner towers; the noise was equal to a 747. Were told the floor was deluxe, not necessarily the rooms! Upgraded to deluxe room, the BAD, at no cost (we'd paid for one!) It was double in size with a pool view but considerable mould in bathrooms, light fittings hanging off walls, multiple electrical cables exposed behind bedside tables and the lights fused first morning. Requested repairs but was upgraded to corner suite, the GOOD, once again double the previous in size and on the 12th floor. After three days, we were told that regrettably we hadn't been informed we had to pay an extra 120RM per day. We were not prepared to pay in the circumstances and told it would be waived this time! The Federal will probably say they reacted generously; we would agree but the situation should never have arisen. Since arriving home, have, coincidentally, met two others who will not stay there again either. On the positive side, grand foyers and great staff - shame about the Pudu Suite!

Excellent location

from JWTM
Excellent location as it is situated at the GOLDEN TRIANGLE of the shopping area. This is one of the oldest hotel in this area but still has its glory shinning! The room was comfortable and the bed was well made & clean. The bath tub was a little bit dissapointing as the shady black smudge (stain) can still be seen after the clean scrub by the hotel so I might not be having a "bath" tub bath any time sooner!! Above all I give a thumbs up for comfort even though I was placed at the last room when I check in twice this month.

Comfortable Room

from Georgiarose
This hotel is one of the oldest in KL and I have read terrible reviews about it. I have to say that it was excellent value for money. The bed was immense and the cleaning a very good standard. The only draw back was we in the tower block and the view out the window was the next tower, However we were out all the time so it did not matter. The location is excellent it was within 1K walking distance - quicker than taking a taxi - taxis wee very cheap though to be fair- of all the major sights- Petronas towers, China town The Menara Tower and the Sultan ABdul Ahmed Building . It is also close to all the major shopping malls. The staff in the hotel were very helpful and friendly also. If you just want a convenient base then thisd is a great choice.

Excellent hotel

We stayed at the Federal at teh beginning of June and it was nothing what I was expecting based on previous reports of peeling wallpaper and dirty rooms. The room was really bright and clean with a good view of the city. The bathroom was nice as well. Breakfast was really tasty and had a good variety of food everyday. We would love to go back to the Federal if staying in KL again.

Do not visit here

from TroubleandCheeky
We stayed here for 3 nights in May and we were very disapointed with the hotel. We booked one month before going. We asked for the rooms to be on the same floor. We were given rooms one floor apart. They explained they could not give us adjacent rooms. My (non-smoking) parents were given a room on a smoking floor, which they turned down. They were then given a roon 2 floors above us, which they found a used condom in their room. We found hairs in the bed, although the bed looked clean we stil asked for them to change it.

The sockets for plugs were hanging off the wall and our phone cable was so badly damaged we could not call out or in. My parents however had a phone call from a tour operator at 7am one morning - in a different language.

The locality of the hotel is great - next to Jalan Sultan Ishmail, and Jalan Alor. It is easy to get to just off the momorail. Unfortunately this made our stay very noisy. The blackout curtain did not fit the window properly, so were were disturbed by flashing lights at night and early sun in the morning.

On the last morning after an OK breakfast (tastless fruit, soured milk) my parents sat next to the pool. The chairs have been stained with varnish which was wet and my parents had their clothes stained. The hotel finally offered to have them cleaned. We had to have them cleaned twice as the marks were there still. Even now they are still marked. There were no signs for the wet, damaging chairs. Just imagine if you were swimming and sat down on one. Your skin would be marked!

All in all, it was a very disapointing stay in the hotel, and we will not be going back.

Perfect Locality

from Hervey
Have just returned from five nights at the Federal. The only thing we did not like was the hard bed, but these are common in Asia.
The Locality of the Hotel was perfect for shopping in Markets or Malls. Lots of bargains to be had. Resaurants are close and a good selection of meals.
ALL the staff were friendly, always spoke to my wife and I, the breakfasts were good, I found the swimming pool a little cold.
We would stay there again, loved China Town. Needed another suit case to come home.
Think this covers most things.

The Federal, KL

from A TripAdvisor Member
April 2006 - We have just had a short stay at the Federal and found that the staff and facilities were very good. The Concierge and staff are very knowledgable about things to do, where to go and what to avoid! The rooms were a little dated, but there was clearly some renovations going on while we were there, and disruption was to a minimum. The Verandah restaurant served a good breakfast in the morning, buffet style, (free as it is in with the price you pay) and the evening it was good value for money food (about £15 to feed three of us!) All in all, when I 'd read earlier reports, I was dreading the stay, but actually being there was a different thing altogether.
