Top Local Tips for Kota Kinabalu
taxis and rental cars Taxis are quick and cheap. While they cost double in Kota Kinabalu than on the mainland, they are still inexpensive by western standards. If you want a rental car, they run about $50 USD a day, and the hotel concierge will arrange it for you. Rental car companies are there, but the cars seem to be privately owned that I rented. A drive to Mount Kinabalu is a must. There are resorts that are worth a visit as well. Weather is not as hot as you'd expect at 5 degrees north latitude - it can be hot in the direct sun but mostly the weather is milder than you'd expect. When it rains, watch out - it comes in torrents. Being Muslim country, there is very little nightlife of any kind. Once the restaurannts close, that's pretty much it for the night. There are no beaches in Kota Kinabalu, although there are islands off the coast which can be visited by a very inexpensive ferry ride. Scuba Diving is poor due to the natives using high explosive for catching fish.
Phillipine Markets Incredibly beautiful Cultured and Sea Pearls.
Gerneral info on KK KK is a great place to chill out before any adventure activities. I stayed here before a 21 tour around Sabah and Sarawek and it was the ideal place to chill out. There are clubs a plenty around the Hyatt area and the malls are accessable too. I was a girl travelling alone and felt pretty safe in this town. There are plent of places to eat, no matter what your preference is. The night markets offer a Steam Boat alternative, where you cook your own food in various stocks at the table. The market along the waterfront offer all kinds of ware and local handicraft, great place to wonder around, if not a little smelly. Ladies, you can get a wash and blowdry for about £2 and a head massage thrown in too - bargain! There's a cinema too, although not sure if movies are dubbed and a few large shopping malls too. You can get a boat out to the island and can also get amazing veiws of Mt Kinabalu, before oyu climb it, by going on a trek behind the Hyatt. Shopping is cheap too - esp designer specs!
