Top Local Tips for Tokyo
Take the bus If you're new to Tokyo I strongly recommend you take the bus from Narita Airport into the city. In our case we went to Tokyo City Air Terminal (TCAT) and returned to the airport from there. It is much simpler than taking the train and the buses are more frequent. TCAT is on the Hanzomon subway line but there always loads of taxis at TACT if you need or prefer to go on by cab.
Can't sleep or waking up at 4am Go to tsukiji for breakfast and pop along to the best sushi place I have ever been called Sushizanmai it's right inside the fishmarket, with two floors. my favourite sushi was the fatty tuna and don't worry if you don't speak japanese, so long as you have a finger you'll be fine. (side note, remember to get a tokyo metro guide in english, you can find them at most stations) Tsukiji is on the Hibiya line, so from Akasaka change at hibiya (3 stops).
Getting around by Train in Tokyo Trains seem the only economical way to get around by Tokyo and it will be intimidating at first. But you will get used to it around day 3. As soon as you arrive at the airport or before you leave, I would suggest you have maps of their train system and a Tokyo map, you can get some at the tourist desk at Narita airport in case you forget. There are two types of trains in Tokyo that you will be taking to get around locally within the city. They are the Metro trains and a few JR trains (Japan Rail). If you will be staying less than a week in Tokyo I suggest you get a pass for both these trains for each full day if you will be transferring to a few stops each day, if not you can alsways pay the lowest far amount and adjust it as you go. Or if you are staying for a month, you should get the new SUICA metro pass they are promoting, or a monthly rail pass. THis might save you a couple fare rides. I personally just paid the lowest fare amount which was typically 160 Yen or about $1.50
