Top Local Tips for Tokyo
Rappongi for westerners If you like hanging out with Westerners in Asia, Ranppongi is the place to be but it is quite sleazy. However, there is a new area called Mid Town in Rappongi which is very nice. There is a shopping centre with plenty of restaurants/bars. Have been told by colleagues that Midtown is classy but drinks aren't very expensive for the area. Orange and Garden bar is worth checking out.
Buy the Tokyo City Atlas The streets of Tokyo make no sense whatsoever. You need the bilingual city atlas. Yes, it costs over $20 and won't fit in your pocket. Just buy it. At some point you will turn down the wrong street and end up wandering around some district that's not listed on the little maps in your "Let's Go" book, and you will be glad you have that atlas!
Limobus and cash. You may be lucky enough to be staying at a hotel which is served by a Limobus directly. If not, you can take the bus to TCAT and there's a steady supply of taxis waiting to take you to your hotel. Cashwise, don't assume that you will be able to withdraw money from the local ATMs - in fact more often than not, you won't be able to. The only ATMs that will work are Citibank (two ATMs in each arrivals hall at Narita by the way) and also the Postal Savings ATMs. The latter aren't open late at night, but are during the day - look for the sign that looks like a clover which is the yubingyokyu (or post office).
