Top Local Tips for Osaka

Osaka's Trains ROCK! You can get ANYWHERE in Osaka by train and subway. We didn't try the buses (didn't need to), but I'm sure they are good, too. We were blown away by how great the train system was. The train stations are confusing for non-Kanji readers, so my best tip is 1) find where you want to go on the big map of the train lines, and find top number next to your destination - that is your ADULT FARE 2) find a machine that has an "English" button, 3) put money into the machine, 4) find your FARE amount in the lit buttons and push it, 5) push how many tickets you want (the picture of the little people on the left-hand side). The machine will give you change. It took us a LONG time to figure out that the key to the train station is to put money in the machine FIRST. Carry lots of Yen with you (including coins)!!

Arriving & departing by Shinkansen ('bullet' train) The Shinkansen trains stop at Shin-osaka station which, for most travellers, probably necessitates further travel by train or taxi to their accommodation. We brought 1 suitcase & 2 carry bags with us from Tokyo & were able to manage these on the train from Shin-osaka to Osaka & then from Osaka to Osakajokoen. It was between 1.00 & 2.00pm when we travelled & the trains were not particularly crowded. If you're travelling during the 7.00 & 9.00am or 4.00 & 6.00pm peak periods, however, I'd recommend using a taxi to & from Shin-osaka station.

Aquarium I wouldn't normally think of going to an aquarium and in Japan I would have thought it was the definition of a Suchi warehouse but is is fantastic. The layout and the array of exhibits is stunning and not once did I see a visitor pointing and licking his lips!
