Top Local Tips for Nikko
Day Trip There are NO good places to stay here so take a day trip from Tokyo. The Shrine is fabulous and magnificent but that's about it. Nikko isn't worth more than one day!
Nikko National Park You don;t really need more than a day in Nikko to see the shrines, they are all set out in a national park. Buy the multi-ticket which is cheaper than individual shrine tickets. You start off in the Japanese garden then follow the arrows on the ticket to the next shrine - it is hard to work out where to go. The monks appear to speak only in Japanese, so you may want to buy a guidebook - especially if you want to remember the insides of the temple - picture taking is forbidden. The Tosho-gu shrine has the famous freeze of monkeys - one panel of which has the 'see/speak/hear no evil' monkeys. The Kegon waterfalls are a 10km journey away - they are interesting but not that spectacular if you've seen Niagara. From the falls its a short walk down to Lake Chuzenji - a beautiful lake with lakeside activities such as boating and pedaloes. the bus station is up near the falls.
