Top Local Tips for Kyoto
Great Ramen (noodle) There are about 8 ramen restaurants gather on the 10th floor of Isetan Building at Kyoto Station. I taste 2 of them and found that they are worth the price and really delicious. Should try!
COLD IN KYOTO We went to Japan in mid March and be aware it can be very chilly. We sometimes found our interest in touring the castles, shrines, and gardens was less keen than finding a restaurant with hot soup or tea!Bring a wam hat and gloves.
Traveling to and from Kyoto We planned a 8 night trip to Japan on out way to South East Asia and I spent a significant amount of time figuring out what was the best way to go: Fly to Osaka, fly to Narita (Tokyo) and then take a connecting flight, Fly to Narita and take the bullet train etc. I was worried that it would be difficult to transfer from Narita to the Tokyo train station to take the bullet train. Here's my experience (and what other people told me): The best way is to fly in Narita, take a connecting train to the main train station in Tokyo (no bullet train leaves from the Airport) and take the bullet train from there. You don't need to reserve a seat in advance, there are trains departing every hour and seats are always available. Also: I would recommend going straight to Kyoto (or wherever you plan to go after Tokyo) right at arrival in Tokyo. Yes, you are tired but that evening is wasted anyway. At least you absorb that travel time and don't waste another half day sometime later.
