Top Local Tips for Kyoto

Getting around Kyoto.. Some general advice I have would be to have some knowledge of Japanese, because otherwise it's rather difficult to get around. Thankfully I speak Japanese, but I thought there would be more English speakers in the big cities - this is not the case. Second, check with your bank that you can use ATM machines in Japan. Despite that I had been to a rural area in Japan on my first trip and had no problem using ATMs, when I went to Kyoto - which is a major city - I walked miles around to try each ATM with several different cards when I had nearly run out of cash on my last day. I was only bailed out by the hotel who gave me cash back on the bill (which was against their policy).
