good little holiday

from djodi77
we stayed in mercure hotel in yogyakarta for 5 nights and overall had a wonderfull stay there.. it was me, hubby and our baby girl. some of the reason we chose this hotel is because they have baby cot, swimming pool, closed to malioboro (shopping district) and some museums.

i booked the hotel few weeks ahead and requesting baby cot. when we arrived quite late, i found out that they haven't set the baby cot. not to worry putting our baby in their very comfortable bed...but its just bugging me, because i have requested few weeks ahead.

morning comes, having breakfast with jamu on the menu... :) nice touch.. every afternoon we have little splash in their swimming pool, feels like having real holiday.
staff are nice and friendly and helpful...

all and all we had a good stay...

The problem with choosing a hotel amongst the top of the recommended list for any city is that your expectations goes up. Come down a notch and the Phoenix represents good value.
Slow start though,... for while we found the hotel's driver immediately on exiting the arrival door we had to wait for quite sometime while he went frantically searching for one other guest..who had gone missing. It turned out that the guest was hoodwinked into a taxi whose driver also claimed that he was representing the hotel.
We also had to wait for an hour after check in before being led to our room...reason given for the delay was because we had specially requested for an executive room with an extra bed for our daughter and they needed that long to have it prepared.
Thankfully there was no more problems after that.
We found the hotel to be beautiful... old colonial theme with tasteful local decor everywhere and spotlessly clean.
The same goes for our executive room, which we recommend over the deluxe room esp if you are travelling with children. It is significantly bigger ,had everything that we needed and does not cost much more.
The room was cleaned daily during our 5 day stay.
At approx 7pm everynight expect a knock at the door by room service personel enquiring whether the are any other additional requests eg more towels, top up beverages etc..a nice touch IMO!
The staffs were all friendly , helpful and wore perpetual smiles.
The only meal that we had at the hotel was breakfast, and though we found the spread to be adequate, freshly prepared and nutritious ,most of the food that we ate, even those labeled as local fare, tasted bland' & more suited to the western palate. There was also no variety in the menu during our 5 day stay.
For more authentic Indonesian taste we would like to recomend the Restoran Sederhana , Bumbu Desa and Wong Solo all located within 10-15min away by taxi.
My wife visited the hotel's Spa and was full of praise with the services.
My daughter was however disappointed with the pool, not so much about its size but more about its location at the central coutyard. between the two new blocks. Too 'open" and It affords no privacy at all. The more modest types amongst us will certainly shy away from using the pool. Not much can be done however, as space contraints dictates its location. One guest remarked that the pool at the Hyatt was nicer.
Check out was hassle free. They even took our word that we took nothing from the mini bar and room!

beware of the room you are allocated

from SLBK
We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in April 2009. We booked a non smoking suite via the hotels website. We were allocated the 'governors suite' on the second floor. After travelleing from the UK we arrived late on a Friday night (after dark) and went straight to bed. We were woken at 4am the following morning by the call for the local mosque and barking dogs not a great start we also noticed a smell of smoking in our room and before breakfast we asked the front desk if we could move to a quieter room which was non smoking. This was were the 'fun' really started, we were told to come back after breakfast and was then shown a smaller room and suite below our original suite (even closer to the noise) these we were told were our only option both were smoking rooms. When we asked why we could not move to a suite with a pool view we were told that these were all taken. This later we found to be a complete lie as no one was ever in the 2 suites opposite our room. We were left with no option but to stay put, the hotels way of making our room non smoking was to remove the ashtray and burn a candle to mask the smell of smoking. Every morning we continued to be woken by the mosque and barking dogs not the best way to start a relaxing holiday. Unfortunately things did not get any better the majority of the staff had little understanding of english even the overall manager of the hotel had to have our conversation translated to him as he did not speak very much english. The icing on the cake was when we ordered room service to find that a specific request for no olives had been ignored and we watched with horror as the room service delievery guy stick his finger into our food (and then expect us to eat it) to show us what was inside our pizza. On two ocassions our room was not made up until gone 3pm even though we had left the hotel at 7am to go on a trip. We both could not wait to leave the hotel.

Overall I would not only never stay at this hotel again nor would I ever recommend it, its certainly not a 5 star hotel by any European standard and the staff not only lie but do not care how bad an experience you have.

Functional and comfortable

from macplastik
Everything works!
The shower in the room may not be the best one around, but works.
The wardrobe is old, but works.
Have the wrong socket for your (electronic equipment) charger? Call the front desk and they will send an adapter up in double quick time. Wifi is free and works! Here I am sitting in their beautiful 1918 cafe writing this review, as we await our journey to the airport in about 2 hour's time.

We walked in yesterday without booking, and they listed down all the available rooms. The only downside is they don't seem to have a late check out, but they are happy enough to keep our luggage behind their front desk while we went to their spa after checking out.

Now their spa is not one of the better ones we have been to. Their hand work felt rather sloppy- or maybe we took up a package that their masseurs are not very good at ('Touch of Ayurveda' under 'My Signature'). For you single dudes out there, their masseurs are beautiful.

The breakfast buffet is functional, with a small selection of local and (international) contemporary. This is way way better than that overpriced hotel near Borobudur temple (check my other reviews).

You must try the tradtional 'jamu' herbal drinks from the lady at breakfast or from their restaurants at any other time. We have gone around all the warong (food stalls) within walking distance and almost none sells traditional drinks like bajigur and sekoteng and yet this hotel stocks some of them.

The staff are well trained, friendly and relatively efficient. It is funny to see the entrance staff decked out in traditional colonial costume (hotel style of course), especially the girl in the pseudo military parade suit and nutcracker hat.

If you want to hire a driver and car from the hotel, you can see the prices listed out at the reception, with different packages with different cars. Very comprehensive.

Overall, nice ambience, almost like Raffles (singapore) in feel. Almost, because this hotel is actually very affordable with all the amenities! (Have I mentioned free gym, pool, and sauna yet?). Nice ambience, despite having the entire Danone Indonesia congregated here at the moment for what seems to be their annual conference.

As for location it is a good base to explore the tourist traps (turn left at hotel exit, walk towards the needle like monument called Tugu, cross the road on left, go straight and that will get you to Malioboro, the museums, and the palace).

Thumbs up, what a hotel should really be.

Wonderful Stay

from ride23
We spent three nights at the Phoenix Hotel and absolutely loved our time there. Fairly central within Yogyakarta the hotel was within walking distance of all the sights we planned on seeing. The rooms were spotless and well appointed. Large french doors led out onto a balcony that overlooked the great swimming pool below. The restaurant had a good menu that was reasonably priced. The staff was super attentive and friendly - overall a terrific experience.

Great deal for such comfort!

from Wiraen
Recommended by a friend and was pleasantly surprised by the room. The room was plush and very clean. Not that thrilled with the staff, but overall a satisfying stay.

Definitely the best value for money in Yogyakarta

from CCSA
Nice quaint hotel. Clean, good for kids. Try the Executive room. Well worth the money. As good as a 5 star except for the lack of gardens etc. For a short 2 day trip to explore the temples this was perfect.

Only reason for the 4 stars intead of 5 was that the spa was not very professional. An hour and 10mins was how long a 90 min massage lasted and you have to drag an advertised discout out of them. Only part of the hotel that did not live up to expectations inspite of the great reviews. Treatment was strictly OK.

One of the best hotels I have come across

from zee27
Staff were pleasent and very helpful. In the centre close to most amenities. we stayed 2 nights and then went to Bandung for 2 days and chose to sleep an extra night on the last day. the gentleman on reception also managed to give us the same rate as before. The breakfast was excellent and catered for different tastes we did not have lunch or dinner in the restaurant as we chose to eat out. The spa was good and the cost of a facial, theraputic massage and hair conditioning treatment was cheaper then what a facial would cost in England. The Wi-fi connection for my itouch was free but you had to get a username and password from the business centre which was no problem. it was more a 4 star rating but compared to the other hotels in Yogya it was definately a 5 star.

Middling but cheap

from Jim9
Nice enough. Staggeringly cheap which means I can forgive it for otherwise being quite average. Rooms quite pokey (until you get to the top level suites). Can't recall the price of the food being an issue so much as its quality which was uninspired for a four star. Staff OK. Security guard was invaluable in helping us cross the unspeakably busy street outside. Horrible location at the crossing of two main roads without much of interest within at least half a mile in each direction other than local colour.
Restaurant is definitely dated but the new wing & its rooms are OK. In common with most of South East Asia the wine is outrageously expensive (£80 for a £3.00 bottle)

Our first room was much too small so we upgraded. This led to the only source of actual annoyance. We were shown a pool facing suite and told that ,although that particular suite wasn't available, another one was (though allegedly being prepared). On pushing to see what we would actually get, it transpired the suite was not, in fact, being prepared but did have an earthy slum & graveyard view (optimistically though, given what we saw of the town, accurately, described by the receptionist as a "city view"). I could see why she had tried to hide the reality of the view but the way it was done suggested she was playing us for mugs (not least because we hadn't actually asked to see the suites) - hence the irritation which could have been avoided with a little honesty.

its a lovely experience to stay at this 'unique and classy" hotel!!
I love this hotel so much!! its so "Java" , hahaha, the bed and the room is designed as "java" as possible, got "batik" on the bedsheet and bedcover , even at the wall, great balcony, great swimming pool, and the most important thing is, its not only me as a truly original indonesian love this, a lot of foreigners being my room neighbours, but of course we didnt have a much time to say hello to them as we did busy with our own "bussiness" :p,
and last one, the WiFi FREE internet access is soooo speedy!!
