Top Local Tips for Ubud

Ubud on a budget... I stayed at Ubud Sari Spa and Resort 6 years ago for $17/night! They had modest accomodations, but I ended up staying 4 weeks because I fell in love with the area and the people. Ubud has changed quite a bit and is much busier, but I returned to Ubud Sari to say hello to the staff who became personal friends. The manager, Bagus, showed me their new additions...stand-alone, zen-like rooms for $60/night! Smokin' deal, and you can't beat the location. You'll feel like a local in no time. I used to also think that Indus up the road was the most amazing restaurant on the planet. Skip it...the food at it's sister restaurant Casa Luna is better. And since you saved all that money, if you want to splurge on a truly amazing gourmet/pricey meal, go to Como Shambahla Uma...across from the equally over-rated Nuri.

Make sure you have enough time to do it all Bali has soooo much to offer that you may want to stay more than 2 weeks...UBUD is in the Central area of the island and offers many cultureal and sporting (can trek a volcano) daytime actiivities that you'll be pretty active there or totally relaxed by the pool in a georgous setting (your choice). The coastal areas are busier and there are many scooters and moterbikes on the road which takes some getting used to...but do give yourself enought time to enjoy the many different parts of the Island so you can take it all in and still have time to relax and do nothing (balance). I'd make sure to see Goa Gaja, UBUD Palace, Monkey Forrest and a tour of the upper rice paddy area where they make the best rice. Coffee plantations are also good and make sure to see the outdoor temples like Uluwatu or Durga's temple. THe white water rafting and jungle walks are also fantastic!!!
