Best aril route to Jakarta It is easy to book Indonesian rail travel at Surabaya Gubeng railway station. All long distance trains have computerised bookings: there is a separate, air conditioned booking office which when I visited on a Friday afternoon did not have any queues. The scenic rail route from Surabaya to Jakarta is spectacular on both sides of bandung, and is the more southerly of the two routes: it goes through Jogjakarta. I recommend travelling on day one from Surabaya to Bandung and then on day two it's an easy airconditioned hop to Jakarta Gambir station. The food on the trains leaves something to be desired for many Westerners so BYO.
